galaxy-s4-zoom.png

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galazy S4 Zoom – the nearest thing yet to a true camera / phone hybrid.  The ‘camera side’ features a 24-240mm equivalent F3.1-6.3 lens with a zoom ring around the barrel, in front of a 16MP 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor. It includes optical image stabilisation, a built-in xenon flash, ISO 100-3200, 4 fps continuous shooting, and 1080p30 HD video; images are stored to internal memeory or microSD. On the ‘phone side’ you get a 4.3″ Super AMOLED display, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and all the other features you’d expect of a modern smartphone. The S4 zoom will go on sale this summer.

Urban Hybrid: Double-Exposure Photos Fuse London & NYC

03 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

double exposure londong nyc

While photo shoots can be meticulously staged, sometimes the best shots come with an element of surprise – particularly in the chaotic context of cities like New York an London.

double exposure art photos

Architect by training and photographer by professions, Daniella Zalcman took a series of photographs before leaving the largest city in the United States for the largest city in the United Kingdom, overlaying them secondary exposures in the latter city.

double take city scenes

The results are predictably unpredictable – a mix of juxtapositions ranging from smooth transitional gradients to sharp spatial contrasts, capturing street art and sidewalk scenes as well as broader city-scapes and edge conditions.

double architectural overlap images

In the end, many of the most jarring compositions defy the brain’s desire to organize a coherent narrative, like a tip-of-your-tongue memory or a slowly-fading dream, an effect reinforced by the gritty texture and grainy quality of the images themselves.

double horizon urban lines

More on the artist, who has also since launched a Kickstarter project for this set: “Daniella Zalcman is based in NYC where she works as a freelance photographer for the Wall Street Journal. Born in Washington, DC, she graduated from Columbia with a degree in architecture in 2009. Other clients include The New York Times, the New York Daily News, Vanity Fair, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Saatchi & Saatchi, National Geographic, Wired, and The Nation.”

Woodskin: Flexible Hybrid Material Makes Wood Modular

28 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

flexible wood

In essence, it has the look and feel of wood, but the flexibility of fabric, all rolled into one composite mesh that is durable but able to be molded into all kinds of creative patterns both temporary and permanent.

flexible wood mesh furniture

From its Italian creators at MammaFotogramma: “Woodskin is a composite material, developed and patented by our design firm. This highly flexible surface – a sandwich wood and high performance mesh – was created by a process of excavation with a CNC cutting machine. By dividing the rigid plan of wood into small triangle, the material is freed – able to be shaped as the maker desires.”

flexible composite wooden material

The result has advantages of both decorative malleable materials and functional solid systems, enabling a wide range of potentials for use in furniture and interior design. Following a broader trend in complex 3D architecture, the mesh of CNC-cut Russian plywood stitched together with layers of vinyl makes the most abstract shapes possible.

13 Feb

Volvo Cars present the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid, the new V60 Plug-in Hybrid. This car combines the best properties from three different car types into one by simply pressing a button. The car becomes an electric car with a range of up to 50 kilometres (Pure mode) or a high-efficiency hybrid with carbon dioxide emissions averaging just 49 g/km (Hybrid mode) or a muscular fun-to-drive car with a combined output of 215 + 70 horsepower, 440 + 200 Nm of torque and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h of just 6.9 seconds (Power mode). The majority of all European car drivers cover less than 50 km a day, for instance to and from work. Then & Now: Hybrid Images of a Deserted School in Detroit

13 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

It is one thing to see a building in a state of disrepair and imagine what it would have been like when it was occupied and vibrant. It is quite another to overlay a photograph, taken from the precise same spot, bringing into sharp focus the difference a day, week, month, year or decade can make.

DetroitUrbex takes documentation to new depths (and heights) in this series of collages that show historical use and present conditions in abandoned structures through the lens of students and teachers overlaid with the haunting shots of an urban explorer.

The hybrid results span decades, including a combination of more-recent color photographs and archival black-and-white ones, capturing ordinary activities and everyday people and putting them in a strange and haunting context.
