Photokina 2014: Hands on with Leica’s S & M (it’s not what you think)

Leica announced two new M-series rangefinders at this year’s Photokina, in addition to the Digital M-P released last month. The German company also unveiled a new medium-format S, which as well as high-resolution stills can capture 4K video. Naturally, we headed over to the Leica booth to get our grubby hands all over the new cameras. Click through to see more.

Photokina 2014: Hands on with Sigma’s new 150-600mm telezooms

The stars of Sigma’s booth at this years Photokina were two new telezoom lenses – ‘C’ and ‘S’ versions of a 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG OS HSM aimed at enthusiasts and sports / wildlife professionals, respectively. The company was also showing off its new 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM ‘C’ for APS-C DSLRs. We headed to the company’s stand on our final day at the show, and got our hands on the new gear (except the stuff behind glass). Click through to see more.

Photokina 2014: Hands on with new Tamron lenses – including 15-30mm F2.8

We caught up with Tamron at Photokina 2014 to get a peek at the new 15-30mm F2.8 ultra-wide angle zoom. It’s designed to cover a full frame sensor and was shown to us in a late prototype form, though its official launch date is unconfirmed. We also got some hands-on time with the manufacturer’s latest all-in-one zoom lenses as well as the always-impressively-huge 150-600mm F5-6.3. Read more

11 June, 2014 – Sony RX100 MKIII Hands On Review

Sony has just started shipping its third-generation RX100, the Mark III. This pocket sized camera builds on the strengths of its two predecessors with a unique pop-up OLED EVF, a more articulated rear LCD, a faster and wider lens, and an enhanced video codec.

After two weeks of working with the RX100 MKIII Michael Reichmann’s hands-on report is now available.

Hands on with the Pentax 645Z

It’s hard to resist the opportunity to play with a new medium format DSLR, so we quickly took up Ricoh’s offer to try out its 645Z. While it may look intimidating, the 645Z is surprisingly accessible, with an experience that feels strangely familiar to those who have handled Pentax cameras like the K-3. It’s also a bargain by medium format standards, and not a huge step up from full-frame. Learn more about the 645Z.

When it comes to the (literal) nuts and bolts of cameras and lenses, Roger Cicala at Lens Rentals is the man to ask. This week he’s been busy disassembling Sony’s flagship mirrorless camera, the Alpha 7R. We’re in the middle of our review right now, and we must admit – some of the pictures of his detailed tear-down make us wince. But we can’t… look… away. Just Posted: Nikon Coolpix A preview – hands on with the DX compact

We’ve had a chance to use the Nikon Coolpix A – the company’s DX-format, fixed-lens compact. The Coolpix A features a 16MP APS-C sensor with no optical low-pass filter and a 28mm equivalent F2.8 prime lens. Nikon has done a lot of work to make the Coolpix A consistent with its DSLRs, from its interface to its compatibility with accessories. Click through to find out more.
