GoPro rival? Panasonic launches wearable HX-A500 4K action camera

Panasonic has announced the HX-A500, a wearable video camera with ultra HD 4K at 30p capability. Along with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity options, the HX-A500 can also shoot 1080p at 60fps, 720p at 120fps and 480p at 240fps. Panasonic’s action camera is also dustproof and waterproof for up to 30 minutes down to 10 feet (3 meters). The HX-A500 has a separate body unit that has a 1.5-inch color LCD display and camera unit that is connected by a cable. Learn more

Kickstarter project seeks funding for ‘Stubilizer’ GoPro mount

When you’re an inventor, you get to put your name on whatever it is you invent. That’s the rule. Hence, the RockSolid Stubilizer. Dreamed up by extreme sports junkie Stuart Smith, the Stubilizer – a GoPro-compatible, plug-and-play image stabilizer – is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter to reach production. Garmin takes on GoPro with VIRB and VIRB Elite action cameras

Garmin has taken a leap into the rugged action camera market with the Garmin VIRB and VIRB Elite, designed to capture video and stills in extreme conditions. In a market segment currently dominated by GoPro, the VIRB steps into the ring with 1080p HD video capture, a 1.4-inch display, integrated weatherproof housing and ANT+ connectivity. The VIRB Elite is a step-up model with built-in WiFi and GPS. Both are capable of 16 megapixel still images, as well as time-lapse photography. Click through for the full press release and pricing.

Photographer captures concert with DSLR-mounted GoPro

If you’ve never had the chance to stand in the front row and shoot a live concert, Montreal-based photographer Pierre Bourgault has the next best thing. He attached a GoPro camera to the top of his Canon DSLR and recorded a seven minute video of his shooting experience at a Dead to Me concert. He then overlaid the actual photos taken at the show, which you can view after the break.

Although not as technically sound as images taken on a dedicated stills camera, there’s an evocative quality to his work, taken using an 11MP GoPro HD HERO2, which we really like.
