HalfBike: Compact Standing Cycle Design Goes Anywhere

22 Mar

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

Halfbike Compact Bicycle 1

How compact can a bicycle get, enabling it to go anywhere in the city that you do? The Halfbike is an intriguing step forward for ultra-packable bikes ideally suited for the urban environment, eschewing a seat in favor of upright positioning for the rider. As a result, it fits into spaces too small for most other bicycles, including city buses and elevators.

Lightweight enough to be carried up flights of stairs, the Halfbike works by a combination of cycling and smooth assisted running for a quick, fun means of getting around the city. The three-wheeled design gives it a lot of agility over a regular bicycle, cutting tight corners and sailing up stairs.

It’s easy to walk with the Halfbike one-handed, and the aluminum frame and plywood handle take up very little space. While the lack of a seat might make it less comfortable for long commutes, standing offers greater visibility.

500px Prime goes live, photographers now get 70% not 30%

08 Mar

Screen_Shot_2014-03-07_at_4.37.16_PM.png

A few weeks ago we reported on the announcement of 500px ‘Prime’ a licensing service built into the popular photography website that was designed to allow users to make some cash from their images. Originally, the service was set to offer photographers a 30% cut of image sales at a minimum price per image of $ 250. A lot of photographers weren’t happy with the 70/30 split but now Prime is live, the terms have changed and photographers are being offered 70%, with new ‘flat rate $ 250 pricing. Click through for more details.

Dinosaur Jack O Lanterns Pumpkins 1

A landscape of towering dinosaurs is eerily illuminated with an orange glow at the annual Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze in New York. A team of professional artists came together to turn more than 5,000 pumpkins into carved masterpieces representing skeletal triceratops, a brontosaurus and even a pterodactyl suspended in a tree.

The pumpkins are stacked and joined together to form cohesive shapes after they’re carved, creating an illusion fiery skeletons from afar. Other designs include a giant spider, snakes and a working grandfather clock.

The pumpkins are situated throughout the riverside grounds of the 18th-century Van Cortland Manor. The event draws tens of thousands of visitors from around the Northeast.

The display will stay up until November 11th and includes sound effects, synchronized lighting and a Museum of Pumpkin Art.

‘Light Goes On’ – stunning video by light painter Darren Pearson

28 Oct

lightpainter.jpg

Darren Pearson is a ‘light painter’, who creates photographs and videos that feature elements which are ‘painted’ with light during long exposures. Most photographers have probably tried painting with light at least once, but Pearson takes it to a new level in his video ‘Light Goes On’ which features a skeleton (one of his common ‘characters’) drawn with light, skateboarding through various locations. Click through to watch the appropriately halloween-themed video.

Rebellious Portrait Photography That Goes Against the Grain Like You Wouldn’t Believe

03 Sep

The world’s major fashion magazines are plump with advertising images of the size-zero models, with their flawless complexions and perfect bone structures. Much to the everyday girl’s dread, these images can also be found pretty much everywhere, especially in portrait photography. However, imagine for a moment if these models weren’t perfect? Would the images have a greater impact? Would people Continue Reading

Stair Rover Goes Where Other Skateboards Can’t

11 Jul

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

Stair Rover Skateboard Design 1

An eight-wheel mechanism allows the unusual Stair-Rover skateboard to descend flights of steps the way conventional skateboards never could. Designed by Po-Chih Lai, the wheel system mounts to a longboard and flexes to follow the contours of stairs and ride up curbs.

Stair Rover Skateboard 3

In addition to the original design, which fits wood boards, Lai offers an upgraded Pro version with a fiberglass deck and black components. The chassis goes to work on rough surfaces like cobblestones or uneven paving to reduce impact and prevent falls.

Stair Rover Skateboard 5

“Reach the top of a flight of stairs and simply keep going – let gravity and the patent-pending V-frame design do the rest. The wheels bounce up and down independently and conform to the shape of each step. It’s a balancing act that gives the board its crab-like scuttle and gives you a butter-smooth ride to the bottom.”

Stair Rover Skateboard 4

A new video of the board in action shows it navigating London landmarks like the Royal Albert Hall, Emirates Stadium and the Millennium Bridge. Currently up on Kickstarter, the project is seeking £50,000 in funding to bring the board into production. Backers donating at a certain level are pre-ordering a board before it’s available to the general public.

Timisoara – As the day goes by

27 Jan

First of all, watch in 1080p or 720p. A timelapse showing different places at different times in Timisoara, edited to recreate the course of a day: morning, noon, evening and night. This is a project i started working on in March, as a hobby, and it’s my little present to Timisoara for the December the 1st national day. The music is Living Daylights by The Ghost Orchid, a big thanks to them for letting my use the song. Check them out: www.myspace.com I chose only a few locations in Timisoara, maybe i’ll do some more another time. The grand total of shots i took for this project is about 10000. There are some scenes i didn’t put it, and some scenes are HDR(3 shots/frame), so it adds up to a lot of pictures. I used a Nikon D90 & 18-105 lens. I want to thank all the people who have helped me out with the project. I hope you enjoy it!

Images from the ‘Skyfall island’ – Michael Gakuran goes urban exploring

17 Nov

hashima-gunkanjima-gakuranman.jpg

Skyfall, the latest James Bond film, is topping the box office charts around the world and wowing audiences with its cinematography. It includes a sequence set on a deserted island – modeled on Hashima, an abandoned former coal-mining island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. Dpreview member Michael Gakuran has written a blog post about his experiences on the island – filming for a Discovery Channel documentary and, earlier, being smuggled onto the island under cover of darkness to perform a little urban exploration (Urbex).

Poynter.org goes behind the scenes of magazine’s post-Sandy cover picture

06 Nov

nyc_storm.jpg

Poynter.org has published an interesting article examining how photographer Iwan Baan took his striking post-Sandy picture of Manhattan, which is currently gracing the cover of New York Magazine. According to the article, Baan took his photograph of Manhattan – which is half blacked-out due to the destructive effects of Hurricane Sandy – from the open door of a helicopter hovering at 5000 feet above New York. He went up on the night of Wednesday 31st October, when limited air traffic made it possible to hover for longer – and higher – than would normally be allowed over a major city. Click through to see the resulting image, and for more details of how Baan got the shot.
