So much for that idea: Swiss village lifts photography ban after story goes viral

03 Jun

A post shared by Bergün – Filisur (@berguen.filisur) on

Just days after ‘banning’ photography, the Swiss village of Bergüm has, not surprisingly, reversed course. In a bizarre video, the mayor of Bergüm states that ‘until the ban on photography is officially lifted, everyone with a camera will be given a friendly special permit.’

The video leaves little doubt that the whole thing was a PR stunt, with Mayor Peter Nicolay proclaiming ‘the beauty of our village has become world-famous thanks to our friendly photography ban.’ Judging by how quickly the story spread, the stunt worked exactly as planned.

GoPro Karma drone goes back up for sale with battery latch fix

02 Feb

Back in early November, GoPro recalled its newly released Karma drone, citing an issue that caused the drone to potentially lose power while in operation. The company announced the relaunch on its blog today, saying the ‘new’ Karma drone is nearly identical to the original model, with only one exception: the battery latch has been redesigned, solving the power loss issue some owners experienced.

Karma features a top speed of 35mph / 56kph and a maximum operating distance of 9,840ft / 3,000m. The drone is compatible with the HERO5 Session and HERO4 Black and Silver cameras via a separately offered harness. Karma by itself is available for $ 799.99 USD, while the drone bundled with the HERO5 Black is $ 1,099.99 USD.

The drone is available now in the U.S., but won’t be arriving for sale in international markets until this upcoming Spring season.

Fujifilm X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition goes up for sale online

26 Jan

The Fujifilm X-T2 Graphite Silver Edition is now available for purchase from several online retailers for $ 1800 (without battery grip). This special edition brings all of the X-T2’s features alongside a triple-layer coating finish described as both ‘durable and aesthetic.’ The special edition camera is joined by an aluminum hot shoe, graphite silver EF-X8 shoe-mounted flash, and a leather camera strap.

The Graphite Silver’s triple-layer coating is preceded by an antioxidant treatment for the camera’s magnesium body, which is followed by the coating’s first layer, a matte black primer. That primer is then covered with paint particles using Thin-Film Multilayer Coating Technology, lending the graphite silver appearance. The last layer is a clear coat to add both shine and durability.

The camera has appeared on multiple retailers’ websites, including B&H Photo, Ace Photo, and Adorama. A model that includes a battery grip is also offered for $ 1900.

Focus ramping intervalometer Timelapse+ View goes on sale

12 Jan

US accessories manufacturer Timelapse+ has announced that its latest on-camera timelapse controller is now on general sale. The Timelapse+ View allows photographers to program complex timelapse sequences and preview them as they happen on its built-in monitor. The controller can itself be controlled via a smartphone app which will also display the progress of a shoot as it is recorded.

Users can select start and end points for focus shifts during the timelapse sequence and determine over how many shots the changes will take place, and the device automatically shifts the focus of the attached camera’s lens during the shoot. Gesture detection allows previews to be activated without the photographer having to actually touch the set-up.

The company says that View also can be connected by Bluetooth to the Dynamic Perception NMX motion controller for moving-camera shots, and the files created are fully compatible with timelapse software LRTimelapse. The device supports a range of DSLR cameras from Canon, Nikon and Sony and costs $ 399.

For more information visit the Timelapse+ website.

Dell’s 8K monitor goes on sale in March for $5000

06 Jan

Ready for 8K? Dell’s UltraSharp 32″ 8K monitor will be the first of its kind to reach the masses when it goes on sale in March. It packs in 33.2MP of resolution (280 ppi) and provides 100% Adobe RGB and sRGB color gamut. If that sounds enticing, you might want to start saving: it’ll start at $ 4999 when it goes on sale March 23rd.

A thin 9.7mm bezel keeps it looking sleek, and the monitor offers two Displayport 3.1 connections and four USB 3.0 ports. Dell’s product information claims the monitor displays 1.07 billion colors, and lists an X-Rite color checker as ‘optional hardware,’ but we’re pretty sure you’d want to throw one of those in too.

PCWorld points out that just because you can buy an 8K monitor doesn’t mean you should pull the trigger just yet. They suggest waiting until GPUs can keep up, which will likely be later this year.

So are you ready to shell out $ 5000 for 8K, or will you wait a while? Let us know in the comments.

New Leica SL firmware improves tethered shooting, SL 50mm F1.4 goes on sale

14 Dec

German photo brand Leica has announced new firmware for its full frame SL mirrorless camera, making it fully compatible with the latest version of the company’s tethered shooting and remote control applications. Firmware 2.2 bolsters the camera’s ability to operate with both Leica Image Shuttle 3.5 for Mac and Windows, as well as Tethered Plug-in 1.1.0 for Mac. Image Shuttle is the company’s application for controlling the camera remotely, while Tethered Plug-in allows images to be drawn directly into Adobe’s Lightroom when connected via a USB cable.

The firmware also removes the restriction on long shutter speeds for those using 6-bit M lenses with the M-Adapter T/SL, as well as some mystery improvements to the camera that are not specified.

The company has also today released the Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH for sale. Announced alongside the SL itself the lens should offer a very slightly more compact alternative to the 24-90mm F2.8-4 and 90-280mm F2.8-4 zoom lenses the company has released so far. It costs $ 5295/£4080.

For more information visit the Leica website.

Press release:

Firmware update 2.2 for Leica SL with improved support for Leica Image Shuttle software and Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens – available today

Leica Camera has released Firmware Update 2.2 for the Leica SL mirrorless system camera, improving support for the Mac versions of Leica Image Shuttle 3.5 and Tethered Plug-in 1.1.0., as well as supporting the new Microsoft Windows version of Leica Image Shuttle 3.5.

Registered Leica SL owners can download the new software and firmware updates from the Leica Owners’ Area (https://owners.leica-camera.com) or take their camera to their local Leica Store or Leica Customer Care in the UK for a complimentary installation.

Leica Image Shuttle 3.5 improves workflow efficiency for tethered shooting with the Leica SL and allows the camera to be controlled from a computer via a USB 3.0 cable connection. All relevant exposure parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO value and autofocus can be set and controlled from the computer, and exposures can be displayed directly on a large monitor screen for assessment.

The Leica Tethered Plug-in 1.1.0 (for Mac) – also available as a download from the Leica Owners’ Area – establishes a direct connection between the Leica SL and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 / CC for Mac via USB cable. The camera’s shutter release can be activated from the plug-in and the images captured can be displayed directly in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 / CC (for Mac), making the workflow even faster and more reliable. The corresponding firmware update is required for the use of Leica Image Shuttle and the Leica Tethered Plug-in.

Firmware update 2.2 also removes the shutter speed limitation when shooting with 6-bit coded Leica M-Lenses, while further optimising the performance of the Leica SL system.

Available from today, the Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. is the first prime lens for the Leica SL-System and sets a new standard in its class. Its large maximum aperture makes this high-performance lens ideal for photography in challenging lighting conditions, and enables the use of shallow depth of focus as a creative tool. Furthermore, the fast, precise and reliable autofocusing ensures that photographers can concentrate fully on composition and creativity. The lens’ combination of resolving power and soft bokeh in unsharp areas clearly isolates subjects from their background, particularly when shooting at maximum aperture.

DJI Phantom 4 drone with 24-carat gold plating goes on sale for £20k

28 Oct

The DJI Phantom 4 camera drone may be functional, but it’s not luxurious. Filling that void is DronesDirect.co.uk, a drone retailer offering a 24-carat gold plated Phantom 4 model — something it has dubbed the ‘Rolls Royce of the drone world.’ The unit is the same as an ordinary Phantom 4 drone excluding the expensive gold coating.

DronesDirect calls this the DJI Phantom 4: Gold Edition drone, and says it is an exclusive offering. Gold exterior aside, buyers get the same features as they would with any other Phantom 4 drone, as well as the remote controller, mobile device holder, an intelligent flight battery, a pair of propellers, propellers storage bag, battery charger, gimbal clamp and a 16GB microSD card.

The Phantom 4: Gold Edition drone is available now for £19,999.97 / $ 21,800, with the company offering financing that brings it to £1,666.67/month for 12 months.
