Ghost Food: A Conceptual Taste of the Future of Eating

Drive around any mid-size to large city and you’re destined to find a number of food trucks. In recent years they’ve become almost as ubiquitous as traditional stationary restaurants. A truck called GhostFood is throwing a very unusual hat into the ring by offering their customers not real food, but the experience of food.

GhostFood, a “participatory performance” from Miriam Simun and Miriam Songster (yup, a double-Miriam team) is meant to simulate the experience of eating foods that could soon be extinct. A 3D printed headpiece attaches to a visitor’s face just like glasses and replicates the olfactory profile of certain foods. A substitute edible substance with a texture identical to the “ghost food” is provided. The scent and texture combined trick the mind into believing that the actual food is being consumed.

The project is meant to increase awareness of the possible future of food. The GhostFood truck will serve up the experiences of eating cod eggs, peanut butter, and chocolate – all of which face the possibility of disappearance due to climate change. In the case of cod eggs, changing seawater salinity is increasingly causing them to sink rather than float, making them both inaccessible to humans and unable to hatch and form the next generation of cod.

Peanuts are affected in multiple ways by climate change. Drier growing periods mean that it’s more difficult to harvest the peanuts, and shortened winters cause a mold called aflatoxin. The mold doesn’t actually harm the peanuts themselves, but it is toxic to humans. Chocolate is in a delicate situation thanks to drought, deforestation, and changing global temperatures. Although the artists are drawing attention to the unstable futures of these foods, they aren’t trying to educate or preach a certain ideology. Their goal is simply to demonstrate what our eating experiences might be like in the future when our favorite foods are no longer available on supermarket shelves.

Deserted Paris of the East: Chinese Replica Now Ghost City

On any given day in Paris, you might see hundreds of thousands of  residents and tourists in the streets. They go in and out of shops, snap pictures next to landmarks, stare in wonder at the opulent architecture. But over 5500 miles away, there is another Paris – a comparative ghost town where the streets stand nearly empty.

Construction on Tianducheng, in China’s Zhejiang district, began in 2007. It was meant to be a luxurious gated community resembling Paris in every way possible. The highlight of the town is its 354-foot replica of the Eiffel tower, but plenty of Paris’ other landmarks have been faithfully recreated here.

There is a major incongruity between one’s expectations for a “little Paris” and what you will actually see in Tianducheng. The streets are, for the most part, entirely empty. There are no throngs of tourists or business people rushing off to their offices. There is a lot of quiet, and there is a fair amount of traditional Chinese culture, seemingly completely out of place in the French surroundings.

The development was built to house 100,000 people and to draw rural families into a bustling metropolitan area. As of 2007, (the last time the population was counted), only 2,000 souls inhabited the gated compound. The population seems to be dwindling, leading local media to refer to Tianducheng as a “ghost town.”

It may seem odd to build a replica of a famous city in a different country, but the developers were working on the idea that Paris was seen as a romantic destination. They felt that Chinese people would want to live in this faux-European environment with its stately townhouses and wide-open courtyards. Several other Western-style towns and communities have been built in China around this idea.

At least in Tianducheng, you are more likely to see empty streets and traditional Chinese agricultural life than the distinctly Parisian pastimes of shopping, strolling, and sipping wine on a restaurant patio. Daily life in the town is documented in the video above.

Work is still in progress in the compound; its expected completion date is in 2015. So the Paris of the East, it turns out, isn’t quite a ghost town – it hasn’t had the time to develop ghosts just yet. Ghost Architecture: Unconscious Art of Building Demolition

When a free-standing building is razed there is often little left to tell its story, but in places where structures directly abut one another there are sometimes amazing traces of not just buildings but floor plans, wall placements, staircases and even room contents.

Like architectural section drawings, remnant spaces can be extrapolated from two-dimensional clues, like material transitions, degree of weathering, surface shapes and color shifts. Occasionally, there are even three-dimensional fixtures still hanging on, like the showers, sinks and toilets in one of the pictures above.

The Unconscious Art of Demolition is a Flickr photography group that focuses on these accidental works of ghost architecture – leftover structural voids and the spaces they imply.

In the process of observing and photographing, these passers by and onlookers are turned into amateur documentarians and de facto archaeologists, discerning and (at least subconsciously) projecting patterns into ambiguous urban decay.

Some take an abstract approach, zooming in on the rich materials where parts of walls were left and other pieces ripped away. Others take a broader focus, highlighting building outlines and implied interiors. Still others capture works of street art placed within the flat landscapes one can imagine inside of these non-buildings.

NJ Ghost Towns – The Bridge To NoWhere ! – Flatbrook River, Delaware Water Gap NJ

New Jersey Ghost Towns: Along the Delaware River are entire towns where the people were forced out by the government in the 60s because they were going to flood the towns and build a huge reservoir. This was known as the ‘Tocks River Project’ (there are numerous books on the subject). After this ‘forced evacuation’ two problems came up. The first was the Vietnam War which caused all funding to be diverted toward the war effort. The second, although not widely publicized, was the fact that the mountain that was supposed to support the proposed dam, didn’t have the right foundation to hold the water back as previously thought. As the genius of government decisions go, they tried to raise funds for the project by putting an ad in the local newspapers and renting out the abandoned houses. Well, you can imagine how those people felt who were forced out of their homes and lost everything to see ‘migrating hippies’ from New York City descending down on the area in droves. Hundreds squatted in these homes getting government checks to live there. One night, again, the government had the National Guard and State Police Agencies descend down upon the area to chase the squatters. Now, years later, you can see the remnants of these deserted houses and towns, now in the Federal Domain, but since the government is pretty much fund-less, what’s left of the houses, the towns and the surrounding land lie in limbo in a bunch of government red tape.
