Adobe After Effects gets Content-Aware Fill, more in latest Creative Cloud updates

With the annual NAB media show coming up, Adobe has rolled out its spring update for the Creative Cloud video and audio apps, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Character Animator.

After Effects now comes with a new Content-Aware Fill function for video which works pretty much in the same away as the still image version in Photoshop. Users can select an object in the footage that they want removed and Content-Aware Fill does the job automatically, filling in the background.

Premiere Pro now features a new Freeform Project panel that lets you organize clips into select shots, making it easier to build and visualize project ideas. In addition text and graphics alignment is made easier through rulers and guides as well as guide templates that can be shared between After Effects and Premiere Pro. Adobe has also managed to speed up mark tracking. The company says this will make color and effects workflows more efficient. H.264 and HEVC encoding has been optimized for smoother playback in Premiere Pro and After Effects.

In After Effects users have now a an Expressions Editor at their disposal. It was designed with advanced users in mind, for examining code visually and comes with features such as syntax highlighting, line numbers, matching brace highlighting, and code folding.

In Character Animator puppet rigging has been improved to give more personality to characters and new Twitch live-streaming triggers allow for enhanced livestream performances, allowing viewers to engage with characters using real-time costume changes, dance moves, gestures, and poses.

Fujifilm Camera Remote app for iOS gets new UI, additional camera support and more

Fujifilm has released version 4.0 of its Fujifilm Camera Remote iOS app and announced the Android version will be available May 2019.

The update, which was originally announced back in February, features a new interface as well as a number of new features that makes it easier to control settings and capture images remotely with wireless-equipped Fujifilm cameras.

Fujifilm has changed the interface of the app to better use the additional screen real estate of newer iOS devices and has changed the icons and buttons throughout the app to create a more streamlined look. The pairing process is now easier with the updated app and Fujifilm has added an ‘Album’ function that makes it easy to browse through photos and videos that have been imported from the camera. Overall stability of the app and wireless connection has been improved with this update and additional camera support has been added as well.

Fujifilm lists the following features in the app’s description:

  1. Transferring images and movies to a Smartphone
  2. Browsing the Camera from a Smartphone
  3. Downloading Location Data from a Smartphone
  4. Shooting Images by Remote Control(*)
  5. Easily transfer pictures from the cameras that offers Bluetooth capability.
  6. Synchronizing “date and time” and/or “location information” with the cameras that offers Bluetooth capability
  7. Firmware update via a Smartphone to the cameras that offers Bluetooth capability.
  8. Bluetooth wireless remote control camera shutter release is now supported for cameras that offers Bluetooth capability.
    *How to change the setting depends on your camera.

Fujifilm’s X-T30, GFX 50R, X-T3, XF10, X-H1 and X-E3 cameras support all of the above features while the FinePix XP140 supports all but number seven. The X-T100, X-A5 and FinePix XP130 support features one through six and the GFX 50S, X-T20, X100F, X-A10, X-A3, X-T2, X-Pro2, X-E2S, X70, X-T10, X-T1, X30, X100T, X-E2, FinePix XP120, FinePix XP90, FinePix XP80, FinePix S9900W and FinePix S9950W support features one through four. Wrapping up, the X-E2, XQ2, XQ1, X-A2, X-A1, X-M1 and FinePix Z1100EXR support features one through three while the FinePix Z1000EXR only supports the transfer of images and movies.

Fujifilm Camera Remote version 4.0 works with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices running iOS 10 or later. Geotagging functionality only works with iOS devices equipped with LTE connectivity.

Sony’s a9 gets AI-powered AF modes and a redesigned menu in firmware version 5.0

Sony has released a major firmware update for its a9 mirrorless camera that adds new AI-driven autofocus modes, enhances image quality and changes a number of menu settings for improved usability.

The standout feature of firmware version 5.0 is Sony’s Real-time Tracking mode, which uses an artificial intelligence-based object recognition algorithm to detect and keep track of subjects. The Real-time Tracking mode also works alongside Real-time Eye AF, an updated version of its popular eye-tracking autofocus mode that also relies on artificial intelligence to keep the subject’s eyes in focus. Real-time Eye AF also works with a half-press of the shutter now and will continue to track even if a subject’s eyes are temporarily closed or obscured while shooting.

Fast Hybrid AF for video has also been added to the a9. According to Sony, Fast Hybrid AF provides ‘smoother, more accurate focus during video shooting, even if/when objects move in front of the subject.’

On the image quality front, Sony says firmware version 5.0 ‘offers notably improved image processing, which maximizes the capabilities of the full-frame sensor.’ Specifically, Sony says the camera features a better auto white balance mode and more accurately captures subtle changes in light making better tonal gradations.

Moving onto the software side of things, Sony has rearranged the menu settings and added a number of features it says customers have been asking for in regards to workflow and usability. Specifically, Sony has added a new My Dial menu, a revised custom key menu and improved touchpad capability. Also added is a new tagging feature and improved dual-card functionality. Keep in mind that when updating the firmware on your a9 camera all settings are initialized returning everything to factory settings and the update cannot be reversed. Sony suggests writing down frequently-used settings for adding and altering after the update has been installed. Sony also warns for this particular update that you might want to get used to the updated menu configuration before heading out to your next shoot as much of the structure has changed.

Sony’s industry-leading a9 camera has received a significant software update that brings AI-driven autofocus capabilities to its award-winning autofocus (AF) system, improves image quality, and introduces a range of customer-requested workflow improvements.

Autofocus Advances

Firmware version 5.0 for the Sony a9 adds Sony’s newly-developed, AI-driven Real-time Tracking mode for precise and robust subject tracking. Real-time Tracking uses Sony’s latest AF algorithm—which includes Artificial Intelligence-based object recognition—to detect and follow subjects with unprecedented accuracy.

Real-time Tracking AF works in conjunction with Real-time Eye AF, also added with Firmware version 5.0. The latest iteration of Sony’s best-in-class Eye AF technology, Real-time Eye AF also uses AI-based object recognition, resulting in an unprecedented level of speed and performance for locking on and holding focus on a subject’s eyes. Additionally, with Real-time Eye AF, users can now activate eye detection via a half-press of the shutter release, and can enjoy focus tracking accuracy even if a subject’s eyes are temporarily obscured during shooting.

Also added with firmware 5.0 is Fast Hybrid AF for video, which now provides smoother, more accurate focus during video shooting, even if/when objects move in front of the subject.

Image Quality

Firmware version 5.0 offers notably improved image processing, which maximizes the capabilities of the full-frame sensor. The camera now more accurately reproduces subtle changes in light for smoother, more natural tonal gradations and improved auto white balance results.

Improved Usability And Workflow

With Firmware version 5.0, the Sony a9 adds several customer-requested features:

  • Improved touchpad capability,

Imaging Edge

For professional photographers, Sony is also releasing a new mobile application ‘Transfer & Tagging add-on’ that supports instant delivery workflow by allowing users to transfer content to their mobile devices via the camera’s FTP background transfer functionality. It also enables voice input for text captioning to streamline overall workflow between photographers and other team members.

3rd time isn’t a charm for Huawei, who once again gets busted faking smartphone photos

You would think Huawei would’ve learned its lesson by now, but apparently not. Yet again, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has been caught suggesting DSLR photos were images taken with its upcoming P30 and P30 Pro smartphones in an advertisement.

In both 2016 and 2018, Huawei was caught trying to do the same thing by passing off a DSLR photos as images captured with its P9 and Nova 3 smartphones, respectively.

This time, Hauwei shared a collection of advertisements, seen above, on its Weibo social media account to promote the launch of its upcoming P30 Pro smartphone on March 26th with a visual design that suggested the images were captured with the much-anticipated periscope camera system inside the devices.

In a result that’s surprising no one, it turns out the images weren’t actually captured with the smartphone. While it doesn’t take much of a pixel-peeper to tell the images weren’t actually captured with a smartphone, GadgetMatch took a closer look and confirmed the images weren’t just DSLR images, but stock photos that can easily be licensed by anyone.

Using reverse image search, GadgetMatch discovered the volcano image was first shared on Flickr back in 2009 by photographer Tom Pfeiffer and also available for use on Getty Images. Similarly, the duck image was captured on a DSLR by photographer Jake Olson from a photo shoot some years ago.

Not long after it had been called out, Huawei updated the advertisements with a disclaimer saying the ads were meant only as an example, not photos actually captured by the P30 or P30 Pro. Huawei also made the following statement to GSMArena regarding the ‘misunderstanding’ in the P30 Pro preview ads:

We’ve been made aware that there might have been some misunderstanding regarding our recent HUAWEI P30 Series teaser posters. We would like to reiterate that those are, in fact, only teaser posters, and are only intended to hint at the unique new features that will come with the HUAWEI P30 Series. Huawei has acquired the licenses to the original images and the posters are artistic renditions of said features only. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the media for their interest in our posters. We have much to announce in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned!

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K gets Raw and URSA Mini 4.6K gets 2nd-gen update

Blackmagic has announced its new Camera 6.2 update, adding Blackmagic RAW codec support for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Upon updating, BMPCC 4K owners will be able to use the camera to record in Blackmagic RAW with 3:1, 5:1, 8:1, and 12:1 constant bit-rate encoding and constant quality Q0 and Q5 recording options.

Blackmagic RAW was introduced in September 2018, but was only available for the URSA Mini Pro at that time. The format’s arrival on BMPCC 4K gives users the option to prioritize image quality or file size, depending on need, including recording at the highest settings while keeping file size to a relative minimum.

According to the company, users can record more than two hours of footage in 4K ‘full cinematic quality’ via Blackmagic RAW on a 256GB SD UHS-II card. These same inexpensive cards can now also be used when recording 4K DCI images using Blackmagic RAW 12:1. On the flip side, Blackmagic has removed the CinemaDNG formats.

Joining the Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2, a second-generation update to the URSA Mini Pro. The new G2 model offers ‘dramatic enhancement’ over the original, according to Blackmagic, bringing a new Super 35mm 4.6K sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range and all-new electronics for faster processing.

The URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 captures 4.6K images at up to 120fps and 1080p video at up to 300fps. It’s also capable of recording Blackmagic Raw. As with the first-generation URSA Mini Pro 4.6K, the G2 model features interchangeable lens mounts and ships standard with Canon’s EF mount. Blackmagic has also added a USB-C expansion port for recording to external disks. Full details can be found on Blackmagic’s website.

The Blackmagic Camera 6.2 update is available to download for free. The URSA Mini Pro G2 camera is now available to purchase for $ 5,995 USD from the company’s global resellers.

Picktorial photo editor for macOS gets 4.0 update with new DAM and workflow features

Non-destructive macOS photo editor Picktorial has been updated to version 4.0, which is free for customers who purchased version 3.50. Picktorial 4 brings new workflow and digital asset management (DAM) features, including its own index — a move to shed its reliance on macOS Spotlight — as well as an updated search function with advanced search fields that aren’t supported by Spotlight.

With the new search capabilities, Picktorial 4 users can find content globally or within specific folders using filters like capture date, rating, IPTC metadata, tags, and more. The software’s DAM also received a number of other changes, including jpeg+raw image stack support, a new image browser with two layout options, batch exporting and editing, support for albums, smart albums, and quick albums, plus the option to sort images in the browser based on rating, name, capture date, and more.

Joining the DAM changes are new workflow features, including automatic adaption to Apple’s color scheme for a uniform appearance, a new viewer that displays an image’s focus point, support for dual-layer jpegs that save all editing info within the image file, automatic NAS and connected external drive syncing for seamless remote access to projects, and support for high-resolution images up to 100MP.

Picktorial 4 is free for existing version 3.5 customers, but some features, including unlimited adjustment layers and batch editing, are only available to Picktorial Premium customers. The plan is offered for $ 9.99/month or $ 4.99/month for an annual subscription. Customers also have a $ 69.99 perpetual license option that includes a year of free maintenance updates. Existing customers have the option to subscribe for $ 39.99/year until February 28.

Sigma cine 28mm T.1.5 lens gets a price and shipping date

Sigma has announced its new 28mm T1.5 cine lens for full frame sensor cameras will be available starting in the middle of March. The lens will cost $ 3499 but will also be offered with luminous markings, to make it easier to use in low light, for $ 4,499.

The lens is latest of a set of 10 full-frame fixed-focal-length lenses, eight of which have a T1.5 maximum aperture. The lenses have 180° focus ring rotation, and are tested using the company’s 46-million-pixel Foveon sensor.

As with the rest of Sigma’s cine series, the 28mm T1.5 FF will be available in PL, EF and E mounts. The company has also announced a new carry case for a set of five lenses that will cost $ 750. It is designed to hold the 14mm, 28mm, 40mm, 105mm and 135mm lenses, and will be available at the same time as this 28mm lens.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 gets its first free update with tool enhancements and more

Photo software company ON1 has released its first free update for ON1 Photo RAW 2019. The new 2019.1 version features enhanced Focus Stacking, masking and portrait features, as well as improvements to the Lightroom plug-in and enhancements suggested by users.

The enhanced Focus Stacking feature offers more accurate image alignment and less speckling. Users now have the option output as layers with layer masks, as well, for additional manual adjustments. The Focus Stacking dialog and HDR window previews now include panning and zooming.

Other enhancements include better masking results when copying, pasting, and inverting, plus increased face auto-detection accuracy for portraits. The update adds the option to delete face selections, the Crop tool now remembers its preset across images, there’s the ability to import/export the keyword list, and other minor enhancements.

In addition to feature changes, Photo RAW 2019.1 adds support for the following cameras:

  • Nikon z6
  • Nikon D3500
  • Sony XH99
  • Pentax K-1 II
  • Fujifilm GFX 50R
  • Leica C-Lux

According to ON1, it is wrapping up work on its upcoming AI Quick Mask Tool, which will replace the original Quick Mask Tool. The feature wasn’t included with this update due to ‘some fine tuning’ that is still needed, but it will likely be released in a late January free update.

Photokina 2019 gets postponed, will become an annual event starting May 2020

In 2017, Photokina’s organizers announced the world’s largest trade fair would ‘reposition’ itself an annual event starting in 2018 and subsequently announced that after this year’s Photokina, which took place in September, the event would be moved to the month of May going forward.

Naturally, it was expected the next Photokina event would take place in May 2019, but plans have changed. According to the German Photo Industry Association (PIV), conceptual sponsor of the trade fair, and Koelnmesse, the event’s organizer, the 2019 Photokina event has been postponed a year, meaning the next Photokina event will take place from Wednesday May 27th, 2020 through May 30th, 2020.

‘The decision to postpone the start of the announced annual cycle by one year is intended to give all participants the opportunity to further develop the new concept for Photokina and to tap into new target groups among exhibitors and visitors in order to heighten the status of the trade fair as a global platform for the photography and imaging industry,’ reads the announcement press release.

PIV CEO Rainer Führes is quoted in the press release saying Photokina 2018 ‘clearly exceeded our already optimistic expectations with groundbreaking innovations and 180,000 visitors from 127 countries.’ He goes on to say that Photokina 2018 ‘set the bar very high for the next event.’

“It is therefore unlikely that, in May 2019 after just over seven months, we will once again be able to create the same enthusiastic atmosphere that characterized Photokina 2018 […] This is why we have decided to start the planned annual cycle in 2020.’

Considering the quick turn-around time from the last Photokina — not to mention its proximity to CP+ in March and NAB in April — it was a big ask of Photokina and its organizers to expect exhibitors, media, and attendees to bounce back with enough updates, products, and cash to fill the floors.

Luminar 2018 gets new AI Sky Enhancer tool for creating dramatic skies

Skylum has released a Luminar 2018 update that brings its new AI Sky Enhancer filter to the image editing software. The new tool works “almost instantly” to improve the sky in photos, only requiring the user to adjust a slider, according to the company. AI Sky Enhancer replaces the masks and filters that would otherwise be used to enhance skies.

The new tool was created by Skylum’s AI Lab and is powered by a deep neural network that was trained using hundreds of thousands of images. Luminar uses the enhancer to detect and adjust only the skies in images, including ones that are cloudy, partly sunny, bright blue, and more.

Skylum offers a long look at how AI Sky Enhancer works in a new blog post, where it explains that the tool relies on semantic segmentation, in part, to separate an image into layers based on detected objects. By doing this, AI Sky Enhancer is able to adjust the sky independent of other image elements while keeping issues like noise and halos to a minimum.

The software automatically applies a mask to the sky in these images, working to selectively adjust elements like brightness and contrast as the user moves the tool’s slider. “Every parameter is applied selectively, as if you were doing it yourself using masking and layers,” the company explains in its post.

The AI Sky Enhancer update is free for Luminar 2018 and arrives ahead of Luminar 3 with Libraries, which will be available starting December 18. Skylum will offer all of its new Luminar features for free to current Luminar 2018 owners until “late 2019,” it explains on its website. The application is available to purchase through Skylum for $ 59/€59/£53.
