It’s missing the telephoto camera that the Pro model is equipped with, but the iPhone 11 has plenty to offer between a new ultra-wide camera, Night Mode and an updated Portrait Mode. We’re testing out some of these features in more detail, but for now take a look at the image quality Apple’s latest generation of phones is capable of.

This week’s episode features images shot with the X-A7 from the Beakerhead festival in Calgary, along with some colorful fall scenery. It all feels pretty apropos, given that October is right around the corner. All images are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs; this X-A7 is not running final firmware and should not be used to judge final image quality.

Nikon’s latest Z-series prime is one of its most impressive, offering very similar optical characteristics to the Z 50mm F1.8 S which we liked so much when we tested it back in January. Providing a traditional portrait focal length and moderately fast aperture, the Z 85mm is fairly pricey by the standards of an F1.8 prime, but it’s hard to argue with the image quality, at any price.
We’ve been shooting with the Z 85mm F1.8 S for a few days, to see what it can do. Take a look through our full gallery of sample images.

One of the eye-catching features of the Sony a7R IV is its 16-image pixel-shift mode. This shoots four images centered around one position then shifts the sensor half a pixel sideways and takes another four, then another half pixel… until it’s taken 16 images. These 16 images can be turned into 240 megapixel images.
We’ve added pixel-shift images to our studio scene at several different ISO settings, along with a couple of real-world examples to our sample gallery showing both the 4-image demosaicing mode as well as the high-res 16-image mode. Just for good measure, we’ve added more standard images to the gallery as well.

We’ve processed the images in the studio scene using PixelShift2DNG, because it allows us to use our standard Adode Camera Raw processing to maximize comparability with other cameras in the scene.
It should be noted that Imaging Edge has a setting called ‘Px Shift Multi Shoot. Correction,’ adjustable in eleven steps between 0 and 1, that smooths some of the stair-stepping and chequerboard errors that can appear in the image. The shots in our test scene effectively have this set to 0.
Before making this decision, we compared this output with the results from Sony’s own Image Edge software. We’ve created a rollover that compares the PixelShift2DNG result to the Imaging Edge output with sharpening, noise reduction and Px Shift Correction minimized, and to the default Imaging Edge result.

The 16-55mm F2.8 provides Sony APS-C shooters with a useful 24-82.5mm equivalent range and a bright, constant aperture. We put it on a6500 to see if Sony’s claims of excellent edge-to-edge sharpness hold up – take a look for yourself.

The Laowa 100mm F2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is unusual among macro optics for offering a maximum reproduction ratio of 2:1, enabling extreme closeup photography. Despite its impressive specifications, it’s priced at a wallet-friendly $ 449. Our UK-based contributor has been shooting with the 100mm F2.8 for a while, and we’ve uploaded a small sample gallery.

It’s not every day that we get to shoot with a system like the Phase One IQ4. We took the 150MP medium-format camera into the studio for some portraiture, as well as shooting in some more casual environments because, well, why not?
