NOAA Titanic Expedition 2004: Breathtaking Wreck Footage

20 May

Breathtaking… Nearly 20 years after first finding the sunken remains of the RMS Titanic, marine explorer Robert Ballard returned in June 2004 helped by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Ocean Exploration to study the ship’s rapid deterioration. The RMS Titanic team worked aboard the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown from May 30 through June 9 spending 11 days at the wreck site, mapping the ship and conducting scientific analysis of its deterioration. Using the Institute for Exploration (IFE) remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) Hercules and Argus, to conduct a sophisticated documentation of the state of Titanic was not possible in the 1980’s. This “Look, don’t touch” mission utilized high-definition video and stereoscopic still images to provide an updated assessment of the wreck site at an enormous depth of 3840 meters (12600 feet). As the nation’s ocean agency, NOAA has a vested interest in the scientific and cultural aspects of the Titanic, and in its appropriate treatment and preservation. NOAA’s focus is to build a baseline of scientific information from which we can measure the shipwreck’s processes and deterioration, and then apply the knowledge we gain to other deep-water shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources. 3D Anaglyph Test Footage – Scifest Joensuu 2010

07 Sep

Anaglyph glasses (red-cyan) required for viewing! 3D test footage filmed during Scifest Joensuu 2010 event (www.scifest.fi) at the Joensuu Areena. Filmed by the 3D workshop, in 720p 30fps. Music by Kevin Macleod (www.incompetech.com). The 3D camera system had two different HD pocket video cameras (Kodak Zi8) side by side. Left and right eye files were edited and mixed in Cinelerra (www.cinelerra.org) on Ubuntu 9.10. This clip shows how important it is to keep the different cameras at the same horizontal level. Achieving that was difficult because of the unstable camera mount in which the cameras were attached to. As a result the two different images are occasinally seen at a different height, ie another image is seen higher than the other. The problem could be solved by using a camera mount which keeps itself at the same position all the time. Another solution, which takes more time, is to adjust everything in the video editor. Another problem is related to the frame rate which should be higher when filming moving object. The Kodak Zi8 cameras also have an option for 720p 60fps which, however, wasn’t used in the footage because editing 30fps footage is faster.
