The Associated Press and British Movietone have announced the addition of more than 1 million minutes of digitized historic footage to YouTube. The AP says that this project represents the largest ever upload of historic news content to YouTube, and will serve as a ‘visual encyclopedia’ for witnessing some of the biggest moments in recent world history. Satellite images and pictures from the ground tell a limited story of one of the world’s most dangerous abandoned places – this flyover footage fills in the gaps, covering the 20-mile nuclear wasteland with uncannily captivating footage.
Postcards from Pripyat was filmed by Danny Cooke on a trip to Ukraine as part of a 60 Minutes story aired on CBS about the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear incident and ongoing efforts to cap the remains of the reactor. Of his adventure, he recounts: “During my stay, I met so many amazing people, one of whom was my guide Yevgen, also known as a ‘Stalker’. We spent the week together exploring Chernobyl and the nearby abandoned city of Pripyat. There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place. Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us.”
The incident turned Pripyat from a city of 50,000 into a ghost town overnight, and that was just the beginning – fallout spread to neighboring countries and continues to leak out locally. Residents were told to evacuate but that they could return within a few days – a promise that could not be kept. Mice in the area have been recorded as having 10,000 times more radioactivity than normal rodents.
Today, the focus is on containing the problem. “With funds from over 40 different countries, 1,400 workers are building a giant arch to cover the damaged reactor. It will be taller than the Statue of Liberty and wider than Yankee Stadium — the largest movable structure on Earth. Until the arch finally seals up that stricken reactor, and no one knows when that might be, something like that could happen again. Unlike other historic relics, Chernobyl does not belong to the past; its power will never die. Chernobyl is forever.”

Notoriously restrictive of the media, the North Korean government surprisingly granted the request of an outsider seeking to shoot a virtually unprecedented video: a continuous car tour of the nation’s largest and capital city.
Aran Pan of Singapore is a photographer and cinematographer given unique permission to document this secretive country, boasting, among other accomplishments, the first series of 3D panoramas shot within its borders and visible to the outside world.
While the film itself is uncut and uncensored, its filming meant traveling with a state-appointed driver, translator, photographer and overseeing official.
The mission of this project, titled DPRK 360, is not to reveal any hidden agenda (or architecture) but simply to convey a sense of place. If anything, the filmmaker hopes his viewers will come away with the idea that there is beauty in North Korea.
Indeed, the streets seem almost unnaturally serene – quiet and nearly empty – and the path traveled (though potentially by design) is quite clean and relatively unremarkable in itself. The buildings, too, are bland if anything, with hints of Asian architectural styles as well as Neoclassical influences.

A video I made to be played at our wedding when people arrived. I’ve added on some footage and photos from the night at the end as well. (footage is in HD, so click the little ‘Watch in HD’ button) A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the event, and to everyone who attended – you all made it an incredible night for us. The mono internal microphone is severely limiting in producing reasonable quality audio recordings. It provides only 1 channel, is sensitive to camera handling and wind noise when used outdoors. I wanted to find a cost effective solution to use with the camera when I needed to get better quality, noise free, stereo sound when using the camera both indoors and outside. Without going to the expensive of buying something like the Rode video mike which really makes the camera very prominent whilst trying to be discrete with filming I set about experimenting with less expensive electret microphones and capsules to see what the quality would be like with the 550D/60D. The 3.5mm stereo input jack of the camera also provides power for external electret mikes so this came as a real bonus as cheap capsules could be used without the need for them to have their own power source and electronics. Surprisingly the stereo tie clip microphone ( available of ebay from several retailers) gave good frequency response and sensitivity without excessive background noise. I am no audiophile and my hearing upper limit is decreasing but for general purpose recording this unit IMHO provides good enough stereo signals for most purposes that i need it for. It is easy to add a “dead cat” type fur windshield for outside use and can be attched to the hot shoe of the camera by means of a plastic adaptor which can easily be made by anyone with a few DIY skills. If you want to deck out your website with stunning photos and HD video, Nikon may have just released the camera for you. The all-new D7000 takes super high-resolution 16 megapixel photos AND records video in 1080p at 24 frames per second. The only way to get more from Nikon would be to drop 00 on a D3x.
