Get Your Virtual Wings: Oculus Rift Machine Simulates Flight

17 May

birdflapping

Feel the wind on your face and smell the pine sap of the forest as you gaze down at the scenery far below – without ever leaving the ground. ‘Birdly’ is a new machine developed by the Zurich University of the Arts that simulates flight using an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, a motor-powered machine that mimics flying movements, a fan to fake the feeling of wind and even olfactory feedback tailored to the landscape of your choice.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 2

The creators studied the movement of the Red Kite bird and translated it to a sensory-motor coupling that enables you to flap your ‘wings’ as if you’re really flying. The movement of your arms directly correlates to the flying sensation you experience through the Oculus Rift headset.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 4

Once strapped in, you’re embedded in a virtual landscape as if you were the Red Kite itself for the closest possible simulation of flight that’s possible without ever actually going into the air. The faster you go, the stronger the air pushed out by the fan positioned right in front of your head.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 3

While it’s easy to imagine Birdly becoming a fixture at amusement parks, so far, it’s just an art installation, with no plans for commercialization. The creators say there are a few tweaks still needed to keep users from getting sick during the flight experience. This device is just the latest in an intriguing line of creations using Oculus Rift to bend reality, like a recent Gender Swap experiment that allows the user to switch to the point of view of someone of a different gender.

Bigger than life: Drone flight documents Alaskan ice caves

27 Mar

Screen_Shot_2014-03-26_at_10.57.22_AM.png

The 12-mile long Mendenhall Glacier, located just outside of Juneau, Alaska may be one of the world’s most easily accessible glaciers. But the crew of Firefight Films takes you far beyond the parking lot. Billed as the first documented drone flight through ice caves, Firefight Films’ co-founders, Lion El Aton and Christopher Carson, outfitted a DSLRPros DJI Phantom with a GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition to venture beyond the physical limits of a human film crew. See video

14 Mar

Last week was cars, the previous week – boats. So this week I’ve found 36 fabulous images of all sorts of objects in flight: airplanes, kits, birds, people?

Look up – look way up. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a kite, or person?

FLight Pollution

FLight Pollution – Stars and Satellites and Planes, Oh My!

When looking up in the night sky it can be an awe inspiring experience, but it can also be alarming. While many people focus on light pollution being an issue an equally alarming issue is FLight pollution (Flight + Light = FLight pollution). This doesn’t get much attention primarily because few photographers photograph and present sequences of images to highlight the problem. While much of my time  is spent cloning plane and satellite trails out of my fine art star trail photography, I thought it would be good to share what the night sky actually looks like over 90 minutes. As you’d imagine there are a good number of flights that pass overhead in 90 minutes and at night you can see them all.

Location Info:

This particular photo was taken of the Minarets in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Mammoth Lakes, CA.

Transportation planner creates beautiful visualizations of flight patterns

30 May

Screen_Shot_2013-05-29_at_4.15.47_PM.png

Michael Markieta, a transportation planner at global engineering and design firm Arup, has created a series of beautiful visualizations of aircraft flight paths as they span the globe. Using different shades for short and long-distant flights, the images map the world in a ghostly spiderweb of connections from airports small and large. Markieta has marked more than 58,000 flightpaths and the results are stunning. Click through for images (via BBC.co.uk)

Flight 1549 Alternate Audio, Multi-Perspective Composite Animation

29 Jan

project homepage: www.exosphere3d.com This video presents the alternate audio tracks and does so by splitting to L and R channels. The audio presented is: LaGuardia ATCT Cab Coordinator, LaGuardia ATCT South Terminal Control, New York TRACON South Control, and Teterboro ATCT Local Control position Radar data is displayed in the upper right quadrant with aircraft identification and altitude (100’s of feet). The audio transcripts of the aforementioned audio tracks are displayed on screen for nearly all communications from the mentioned audtio recordings. Continuity is maintained with the audio transcript display, however the audible tracks are faded in and out and selected based on perceived importance to the accident timeline. This combination of information is not a likely candidate for final presentation because of information overload. However, it does illustrate the usefulness and capabilities of a fully integrated reconstruction technique.
