Olympus has announced the OM-D E-M1, now the flagship of its Micro Four Thirds lineup. Rather than calling it the follow-up to the E-M5, Olympus says that the E-M1 is actually the ‘successor’ to the E-5, the Four Thirds camera introduced back in 2010. The E-M1’s standout feature is its new 16.3MP Live MOS sensor with on-chip phase-detection autofocus, designed to work with legacy Four Thirds lenses.

HTC takes new approach to sensor tech in latest flagship phone

19 Feb

htc-one.jpeg

Much ado has been made about the sensor technology rumored to debut along with HTC’s newest handset launched today, the HTC One. While rumors of stacked sensors were predictably wide of the mark, HTC is taking a clever approach to improving camera phone quality by betting on fewer but larger pixels captured by a 4.0MP 1/3″ sensor, which are similar in size to those found in enthusiast compact cameras, and which HTC is calling ‘ultrapixels’. Combined with a fast F2.0 lens and optical image stabilization, the HTC One’s specs hold promise for better low-light photography – an area where mobile phones have fallen notoriously short. Sony adds to slim T-series and launches WX150 flagship style compact

29 Feb

Sony has added depth to its T-series range of slim cameras with the skinny DSC-T66 and svelte-yet-rugged DSC-TX20. It has also added the 10x zoom DSC-WX150 to the top of its conventionally-shaped compact camera lineup – claiming it to be the slimmest 10x camera currently available. The 5x zoom T66 and the WX150 are both based around the company’s latest 18MP CMOS sensor, helping them offer high-speed autofocus. The T66 has an OLED touch-screen while the waterproof, 16MP T20 instead uses a LCD touch-panel. Finally there’s a DSC-W690, a 16MP CCD camera based around the same 10x, 25-250mm equivalent lens as the WX150.

Sony unveils SLT-A77 flagship APS-C DSLR-rival

26 Aug

Sony has released the SLT-A77, a successor to its A700 semi-pro DSLR. The long-promised A77 makes use of Sony’s translucent mirror technology to offer an impressive 12 frame-per-second shooting rate, despite its 24MP APS CMOS sensor. In addition has the highest-resolution electronic viewfinder we’ve ever encountered, with a 2.4M dot OLED viewfinder that rivals the company’s full-frame A900 for size. We’ve been using a pre-production A77 for just over a week and have prepared a hands-on preview including real-world sample gallery. Has it been worth the wait for the Alpha faithful?
