  • Nikonos reborn? Our first impressions review of the submersible Nikon AW1

    The Nikon 1 System has been around for a couple of years now, but the emergence of the AW1 signals a radical departure from what has been the norm. Functionally very similar to the 14MP J3 which Nikon announced earlier this year, the AW1 is waterproof to 15m (49ft), shockproof from 2m (6.6 ft), and freezeproof. It’s being announced alongside two equally rugged lenses, and a range of colorful silicone skins for underwater and wet weather use. We had the opportunity to use the new camera recently, and we’ve put together a first impressions review covering its design, operation and key features. Click through for a link.

  • SanDisk introduces first CFast 2.0 memory card

    Cementing its commitment to the ‘CFast’ standard, SanDisk has introduced the Extreme Pro CFast 2.0 memory card, the first of its kind. The card boasts read speeds of up to 450MB/s and write speeds of up to 350MB/s, and will be sold with 60 or 120GB of storage. As a competitor to the Nikon-backed XQD standard, this first CFast 2.0 card is introduced alongside with an ARRI AMIRA documentary-style camera that records to internal CFast 2.0 cards.   • Olympus O-MD E-M1: First Impressions Review

    The O-MD E-M1 has just been announced and takes its place as both Olympus’ flagship Micro Four Thirds camera and the successor to the E-5 DSLR. We’ve been spending some time with a production unit, taking the new 16.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor for a spin in a variety of conditions.   • 6 September, 2013 – Blackmagic Cinema Camera First Impressions

    Imagine if your DSLR, and indeed all affordable cameras had very small sensors, and could only shoot JPGs; highly compressed and in a limited colour space. Imagine if only very expensive medium format cameras could shoot raw with large sensors.

    That’s been the case till recently in the world of video. Small sensors, no depth of field to speak of, restricted colour space, and baked JPG type images. Not a pretty picture – literally.

    Now a small Australian company, Blackmagic, has a series of moderately priced cameras that can shoot raw video. We have been working with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in MFT mount, and our First Impressions report is now online.

  • Forest Pavilion is World’s First 3D-Printed Architecture

    There has been a lot of competition to design and execute the first prototype of a 3D-printed architectural structure, including complex concepts for houses inspired by nests and möbius strips. But it looks like that honor goes to Smith | Allen, an Oakland, California-based duo of designers who have created the Echoviren Pavilion.

    The airy white pavilion consists of 585 interlocking components made of plant-based bio plastics, printed over 10,800 hours, mimicking the look and feel of its setting in a redwood forest. Measuring 10x10x8, the structure was assembled in four days.

    The bioplastics will enable the pavilion to eventually decompose naturally within the forest, just like the trees that grow all around it. That process will take 30 to 50 years. It will also become a habitat for insects, moss and birds during its time in the forest.

    The Echoviren Pavilion was made using 7 of the Type A Machines Series 1 printers. The team actually used these small-scale printers to create large bricks with which to build, leading some critics to state that it’s not a truly 3D-printed structure, printed in much larger parts to create the whole. The true test of 3D architecture will come when larger printers are used to lay out the material for the components, layer by layer, but the Echoviren Pavilion is still a beautiful example of what 3D printers can do.

  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 First Impressions Review

    Prior to its announcement today, we had the opportunity to use Panasonic’s new high-end Lumix DMC-GX7 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. As well as a redesigned 16MP Live MOS sensor, the GX7 features a tilting camcorder-style EVF, a tiltable rear LCD screen and a silent mode designed to capture full-resolution still images without the mechanical shutter.     Nokia’s Lumia 1020 is the company’s second attempt at a 41-megapixel camera phone, and it’s been generating a lot of hype. As the follow-up to last year’s 808 PureView phone, Nokia’s latest has much to prove. The 808 remains one of the best smartphones we’ve ever looked at in terms of its photographic capabilities, so we’ve been keen to get our hands on the 1020 which melds Nokia’s innovative ‘oversampling’ technology with a more modern Windows operating system.   • Toshiba announces first UHS-II SD cards as world’s fastest

    Toshiba has announced the Exceria and Exceria Pro ranges of SD cards – the first to conform to the UHS-II standard and the fastest SD cards yet announced. The Exceria Pro cards will be available in 16GB and 32GB sizes from October 2013 and will offer read/write speeds of 260MB/s and 240MB/s respectively. 32GB and 64GB Exceria series cards offering the same read speeds but half the write speed will follow a month later.

  • Love Hurts: First Aid Kit to Help Survive a Broken Heart

    Nothing but time can heal broken hearts, but there are some salves that can at least help bridge the gap between a breakup and happier times.

    That is the idea behind this half-serious (and currently conceptual) relationship survival kit titled Love Hurts by New York graphic, product and packaging designer Melanie Chernock (images by Luke Nilsson).

    About its contents: “Love Hurts contains all of the essentials for going through a rough breakup such as dark chocolate, vodka, bubble bath soap, a candle with matches, candy hearts, a mix CD, and if all else fails, tissues. All of the products come neatly packaged in a compact kit.”

    Modern minimalist gift box meets traditional metal medical case in the simple red-and-white-themed design. The contents are a combination of cute, cliche and pragmatic  – really, no one should have to go through the end of a long-temr relationship without access to chocolate.
