Fujifilm announces new firmware for GFX 50S, X-T3, and X-H1

Fujifilm has announced the impending arrival of new firmware updates for its GFX 50S, X-T3, and X-H1 mirrorless cameras. The updates bring improved in-body image stabilization on the X-H1, 4K HDR and F-Log video for the X-T3, and a new 35mm format mode for the GFX 50S.

GFX 50S

The new firmware for the Fujifilm GFX 50S, version 3.30, is due out by the end of November 2018. Fujifilm says the update adds support for a new 35mm Format Mode when using GF- and H-mount adapters, which crops the center of the sensor to a size of 36mm x 24mm, a makes for a 30.5-megapixel image. The update also improves upon the eye-sensor responsiveness, adds simultaneous deletion of Raw and JPEG files, and supports color adjustments for the EVF and LCD displays.

X-T3

The new firmware for the Fujifilm X-T3 is version 2.00. Set to be released in December 2018, the firmware update brings 4K HDR recording in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). HLG footage should simplify the capture of HDR content and should improve post-production capabilities. Fujifilm notes it’s only compatible with the camera’s 10-bit H.265 (HEVC) mode, and works best when viewed on displays and TVs with HLG format support.

Firmware version 2.00 for the X-T3 also brings simultaneous output of Film Simulation and F-Log footage, meaning it’s possible to record in F-Log while viewing the Film Simulation image on an external monitor. Fujifilm says this capability isn’t compatible with ‘59.94P/50P, FHD high speed recording, 4K interframe NR, and HDMI output info display mode.’

Continuing on, the X-T3 will now be compatible with All-Intra and maximum bitrate recording with H.264, up to the maximum bitrate of 400Mbps. Also, movie files will no longer be split when the file reaches 4GB so long as it’s being stored to an SD card with at least 64GB of storage. It’s also now possible to display color temperature on the EVF and LCD displays in Kelvin.

Newsshooter has shared a video showing off some of the new features of firmware version 2.00 for the Fujifilm X-T3.

X-H1

Last up is the Fujifilm X-H1, which is set to receive firmware version 2.00 in December 2018. The defining feature of this firmware update is the improved image stabilization. Fujifilm says in-body image stabilization will now work better with optical image stabilization in lenses to improve overall stability.

‘With an XF or XC optical image stabilized lens, in-body image stabilization worked with 3 axis (up and down / optical axis rotation). The remaining 2 axis (right and left pitch, yaw angle) was controlled by optical image stabilization in the lens,” says Fujifilm in its press release. “[Firmware version 2.00] has a new image stabilization algorithm to allow the in-body image stabilization to work in all 5 axis and to achieve more than five-stops (up to the equivalent of 5.5 stops) image stabilization by cooperative control according to the types of frequency and blur amount.”

Fujifilm notes lenses must also be updated to their latest firmware to get this compatibility. You can find a full list of up-to-date lens firmware on Fujifilm’s website.

Fujifilm X-T3 firmware update fixes distortion, memory card lock issues

Fujifilm released a firmware upgrade (v1.01) for its X-T3 mirrorless camera that addresses issues with distortion compensation when using the electronic shutter in continuous high shooting mode. A bug where the mechanical lock on SD cards was ignored has also been fixed, along with unspecified ‘slight defects’.

Updated firmware for Fujifilm X-T100 and X-A5 include two new filters, square capture mode

Fujifilm has new firmware updates for its X-A5 and X-T100 mirrorless cameras. The updates include new and updated features in addition to a number of bug fixes.

First up is the Fujifilm X-A5. Firmware version 1.20 adds two new Advance Filters called ‘Rich & Fine’ and ‘Monochrome [NIR].’ The ‘Rich & Fine’ filter is made for food and still life photography, with an emphasis on saturated colors and a slight vignette. As the name suggests, the ‘Monochrome [NIR]’ filter simulates the look of a near-infrared camera through selective toning of the scene.

Also included in the update is a new Square Mode, which enables 1:1 format capture and improved autofocus accuracy in AF-C mode when the shutter is half-pressed. A bug that caused the highlight warning not to show in the Info display has also been squashed, alongside a few others.

Onto the X-T100, firmware version 1.10 adds the same two new Advance Filters, Square capture mode, improved autofocus accuracy in AF-C mode present in the X-A5 firmware update. Fujifilm has also made the default ISO setting when switching between P, S, A, M, Adv modes ‘Auto.’

Fujifilm also fixed an issue with the autofocus frame shifting when zooming in on the focus position display. Other bug fixes, including the aforementioned highlight warning issue, have been included as well.

Sony replaces RX100 V with RX100 VA, bringing RX100 VI processor and firmware

Look familiar? The RX100 VA is a subtle refresh of the RX100 V with a change of processor the only hardware difference.

Sony has quietly updated its RX100 V, bringing a couple of the goodies from the RX100 VI travel zoom. The updated RX100 VA gains a new processor and various firmware tweaks but misses out on the VI’s other hardware improvements.

The updated processor brings some performance benefits but it also means the VA gains the latest Sony menu system, which has been restructured, has clearer indicators of where you are in the menu and, most significantly, has a customizable ‘My Menu’ tab. This allows you to group the settings you regularly change, rather than having to remember which sub-section of which tab they’re buried in.

On top of this, the camera’s Eye AF and subject tracking performance should be improved. The refresh rate of the viewfinder is also said to be uprated. In addition, these are some of the differences we found:

  • Deeper buffer (233 files, up from 150)
  • Proxy movie mode (captures 720p footage alongside 4K capture)
  • ‘Zone’ AF area mode
  • Variable size spot metering, Entire Screen Average and Highlight Spot metering
  • Add ratings to images (with ability to customize which ratings are available)
  • Three Auto WB options (Std, Ambience or White)

However, the RX100M5A does not get the improved one-touch viewfinder, nor the touchscreen added in the RX100M6. Its rear screen tilts down by 45°, not 90. Nor does the VA gain all the firmware improvements from the VI: there’s no sign of Hybrid Log Gamma or the ability to capture S-Log3 footage, for instance.

The RX100 VA also loses compatibility with Sony’s in-camera ‘PlayMemories Camera Apps.’

The updated Sony menus are a little easier to navigate and gain a custom ‘My Menu’ tab.

There’s been no press release from Sony of the changes but the VA appeared on Sony’s Japanese site last week and has replaced the RX100 V if you visit the Sony US website. This is the first time Sony has made any update to an RX100 model, rather than simply replacing it, perhaps offering hope that the company will continue to develop both the long-zoom and short, bright-zoom models in the lineup.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II firmware 1.0.4 update fixes ‘rare’ operational bugs

Canon has released firmware update 1.0.4 for the EOS 6D Mark II, adding important bug fixes for “rare instances” of issues with the touch panel and operation buttons. The update, which is available from Canon’s support website here, is about 30MB in size and includes the following changelog:

1. Corrects a phenomenon in which in rare instances, the operation buttons and some touch panel functions do not respond.

Tamron releases updated firmware for 28-75mm F2.8 for Sony E-Mount

Tamron has released firmware version 2.0 for its 28-75mm Di III RXD, addressing previously acknowledged autofocus issues.

The update specifically addresses focusing issues on Sony E-mount cameras while shooting video, including ‘autofocusing operation and loss of focus,’ while also addressing ‘flicker on peripheral parts of the image when zooming.’

Cactus releases firmware to add TTL control for Canon flashes

Chinese flash system manufacturer Cactus has released new firmware for its V6 II Transceiver that will allow it to wirelessly communicate TTL information between a Canon or Cactus flash and a Canon camera. The X-TTL update makes it possible to trigger Canon flashes and retain full TTL control with that flash either on or off camera.

Canon flashes can be used on their own or in groups of Cactus models, while HSS and remote power controls are also possible. The same V6 II transceiver can be used with Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony, Sigma and Fujifilm systems, but with Canon systems only manual power and zoom controls are possible.

Leica introduces new features and enhancements to five cameras in mass firmware release

Leica has released new firmware for five of its camera models, making significant changes to the way existing features operate while also adding totally new functions in some cases. The updates effect the M10 rangefinder, the Q compact and the new CL, as well as the TL2 and the T/TL.

The highlights of the update include allowing four minute exposure times in the M10 at base ISO, and the addition of aperture value recording in the camera’s EXIF data – even though it will be an estimate. Q users get a favourites menu that can hold up to 15 items for especially quick access, and the ability to determine that the electronic shutter should be constantly on. They will also welcome faster processing of the camera’s DNG Raw files.

The CL now offers users the option to transfer the functions of the two main dials between each other, and for those who find themselves accidentally pressing buttons on the small body a new lock feature deactivates access points to keep them from being unintentionally altered.

Control over the shutter mode comes to the TL so users can choose when to shoot with the electronic or mechanical shutter, and the firmware brings focus peaking to users of the M adapter and to those using R lenses on this little camera. The T and TL bodies get better chromatic aberration correction and support for the Elmarit-TL 18mm F2.8 ASPH lens.

Extensive updates for Leica Cameras: New firmware releases with numerous improvements and entirely new functions.

Leica Camera AG has released a series of extensive firmware updates for the Leica M10, Leica Q, Leica CL, Leica TL2 and Leica T/TL camera models. Alongside further improvements of existing features, these updates also introduce a considerable number of new camera functions.

Leica M10 (v2.4.5.0)

  • Optimisation of the delete menu: The graphic user interface for the deletion of pictures has been revised.
  • Longer exposure times: Exposure times of up to four minutes are now possible at base ISO.
  • New continuous shooting mode with lower frame rate: An additional continuous shooting mode is now available (Continuous Low Speed, three frames per second).
  • ‘Load profile’ is now available in the favourites menu.
  • Aperture value in EXIF data: The camera compares the brightness measured through the lens with the measured ambient brightness to estimate the aperture used. This value is then written to the EXIF data. In some cases, the interpretation of the subject or scene may lead to incorrect estimation of the aperture value, for instance when shooting subjects or scenes with high contrast and black or white objects.
  • LED deactivation: The red LED on the back of the camera can now be deactivated in the control elements menu.
  • Auto-ISO setting: Auto-ISO for base ISO is set to the default value of ISO 200 to optimise dynamic range.

Leica Q (v3.0)

  • Favourites Menu: Users can now enter and save up to 15 settings for faster access in a Favourites Menu.
  • Power Saving Mode: If required, the camera can now be set to switch to Stand-By Mode after 10 seconds.
  • Extended functions for the Fn button: Even more options can now be selected for programming the multi-function button.
  • User Profiles: Profiles can now be imported from and exported to a memory card.
  • OIS – optional ‘Auto’ setting: This setting enables automatic activation of optical image stabilisation at shutter speeds of 1/60 s and slower.
  • EVF/LCD setting options: This menu item can now be assigned to the Fn button.
  • Settings for the electronic shutter: The electronic shutter can now be set to permanently active.
  • DNG files: The processing speed of DNG files in the camera has been increased.
  • Autofocus fields: The last AF field used is now memorised and recalled when switching the camera off and on again.
  • Self-timer: The setting is now memorised and recalled when switching the camera off and on again.
  • Exposure preview deactivation option: Exposure preview can now be deactivated in manual mode (especially useful when shooting in the studio with flash systems, underexposed settings or in dark environments).
  • Image review: Automatic image review remains active as long as the shutter release button is pressed.

Leica CL (v2.0)

  • Programming of setting dial functions: The programming of the two setting dials can now be swapped from one to the other.
  • Button lock: Pressing and holding the left-hand setting dial activates button lock (this does not lock the on/off switch, the shutter release or the left-hand setting dial).
  • Power Saving Mode: If required, the camera can now be set to switch to Stand-By Mode after 10 seconds.
  • Touchscreen autofocus: The AF metering points can now also be shifted with the joystick control in Touch AF mode when using the electronic viewfinder.

Leica TL2 (v1.4)

  • Selection of LCD / viewfinder settings: It is now possible to select when and where the content is displayed (up until now, display was simultaneous).
  • Customisable left function menu: The items of the left function menu can now be customised by the assignment of up to six of a total of thirteen functions.
  • Extended functions for the Fn button: Now, one of a total of six different functions can be assigned to the Fn button.
  • Settings for the electronic shutter: The electronic shutter can be deactivated, permanently activated or set to complement the mechanical shutter.
  • Focus Peaking in AF Mode: Manual focus corrections can now be applied in AF Mode with the MF-ring. In the meantime, Focus Peaking is available from FW 1.4.
  • Focus Peaking with M-/R-Lenses: Focus Peaking is now also available when using M- R-Lenses with the M-Adapter L.
  • Exposure correction during video recording: The left-hand setting dial can now be used to apply exposure correction during video recording.
  • Zoom-in when reviewing images in the EVF: The right-hand setting dial allows users to zoom in while viewing images in the EVF.

Leica T/TL (v1.8/v2.3)

  • Simpler connection between the camera and a smartphone by app
  • Reduction of chromatic aberration for all TL-Lenses
  • Support and auto-update for the Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH.

Nikon D5 firmware update adds useful ‘recall shooting functions’ feature

Nikon has released firmware version 1.30 for its D5 professional DSLR, and the new camera software offers a new feature that’s potentially very useful: recall shooting functions.

The “recall shooting functions” option is now available for Custom settings f1 (custom control assignment) and can be configured so that pressing and holding specific controls will recall previously saved exposure settings (including shutter speed and aperture). The function is designed to allow for quick changes of shooting parameters in variable light conditions.

The function can be assigned to the Preview button, Fn1 button, Fn2 button, AF-ON button, Sub-selector center, AF-ON button for vertical shooting, or Lens focus function buttons. If you are using a WR-1 or WR-T10 remote control, it can also be assigned to the Fn buttons on those controls. An addendum to the camera manual that explains the new function in more detail can be downloaded on the Nikon website.

All other changes in this update are fairly minor. The focal lengths of some AF-S and AF-I lenses that are displayed with a teleconverter attached to the camera have been updated, and the time zone display in the Setup Menu only shows the names of major cities in the currently selected time zone. There are also a couple of minor bug fixes.

Leaked Panasonic firmware update is made official

Panasonic had been planning on a May 30th announcement and release of firmware updates for its GH5, GH5S and G9 models, only to have that plan foiled by a leak of the announcement in Japan today. So while you can’t download the actual firmware updates themselves until next week, here’s a high-level look at what you can expect from the new software.

Autofocus performance is said to be improved on all three models for both stills and video shooting along with an improvement of the quality and performance of sound recording during video. For the G9 and GH5, the image stabilizer has been tweaked, and there have been some refinements of the high-resolution mode for the flagship G9.

Unfortunately, the web pages with all of the nitty gritty details for each camera (see the links in the press release below) aren’t yet live, so we can’t comment on what exactly the ‘New Functions’ and ‘Other Improvements’ will be for each model. That said, we’re certainly looking forward to seeing how effective these AF enhancements will be when they land next week.
