Dead Drops: Hidden USB Sticks Offer Anonymous File Sharing

07 Feb

If you happened to notice a USB stick poking out of a brick wall in an urban space, would you be brave enough to connect your computer to it just to see what it might contain? Will it dump a bunch of malicious software onto your machine, or reveal something amazing? You just never know. The Dead Drops offline peer-to-peer file sharing project has been called “the nerd equivalent to glory holes,” bringing the sense of anonymity provided by the internet into the real world in a way that feels conspicuously sketchy.

Berlin-based artist Aram Bartholl took inspiration from the methods spies used to transfer information in a secret location. The process of accessing or distributing files on these networks is anonymous, you can share anything you want, and actually plugging your laptop or tablet into the drive sometimes requires bending at awkward angles or doing something that looks vaguely suspicious.

Bartholl notes that the ‘danger’ of participating in the project is no different from that of sharing files on the internet. People typically share photographs, art, poetry and videos. The drives range from 64 megabytes to a whopping 120 gigabytes. To install one of your own, just find or create a hole in a wall or other urban surface, remove the thumb drive’s plastic case and wrap the memory board with waterproof tape, place it in the hole with just the port exposed and cement it in with fast-setting concrete.

The project started in 2010 and has since grown to thousands of locations worldwide, according to a database that tracks where they’ve been installed. Some can be found in the busiest areas of cities like New York, while others are in abandoned buildings off the beaten track. You can find out whether there are any near you, or create one of your own using the Dead Drops site’s instructions.

Windows 7 – The Explorer is Everywhere; Open a File While Saving Another One

16 Oct

When saving or opening a file in most every Windows 7 application, Explorer features can be used – sometimes with interesting effects.

Here’s a tips many new Windows 7 users don’t know about, and I’ve even shown this to a few experienced users. When opening or saving files in most applications, you are actually opening mini Explorer windows.

What does this mean? Right-click inside a blank area of the file area of the dialog box and you can choose how you want files in the current folder to be viewed, sorted, grouped, etc. You can even select “New” in the dialog box to create new files while supposedly inside an “Open” dialog box!…

Windows 8 – View File Extensions for Security

16 Oct

Configure Windows 8 Explorer to show file extensions when browsing through files on the Desktop.

For security, it is important to be able to view file extensions when browsing through folders in Windows 8. For example, a miscreant may send you a file named fireworks.jpg that you think is a harmless .JPG photo, yet actually is fully named fireworks.jpg.exe, containing a virulent payload that could harm your machine, data, and/or privacy.

Unlike earlier versions of Windows, Windows 8 does not make you go through so many hoops to enable extension viewing – once you get to the standard Desktop interface, of course….

[MODIFIED] File Extensions – ZIP File Format

25 Aug

Zip archives defined, including how they are created and unpacked.

The .ZIP extension signifies that a file is a ZIP archive. This allows people to package a complete game, screensaver, application, electronic book, or whatever as one larger file instead of multiple smaller files, for example before sending them via e-mail. ZIP files are used often in Windows environments, and you will also see them on Mac and Un*x-based machines.

ZIP files can be created by a third-party external creation tool, but most modern operating systems have the ability to create basic .ZIP files internally without downloading such software. The process takes a group of files and mashes them (“zips” them) together into one “archive” file, sometimes reducing the amount of space the ZIP file takes on the hard drive (“compressing”). After the ZIP file is transferred, the recipient takes the ZIP file and “unzips” it, causing the original files to appear on their hard drive. Again, while third-party unzipping tools exist, most operating systems can do so directly….

[MODIFIED] Google Image Search – Search For Icons or Other Specific Image File Types

03 Aug

Query Google for icons, BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, or SVG files on the Internet.

With Google’s Image Search you can find images found on websites across the Internet. Several types of filters are available, allowing you to limit your searches to faces, photos, clip art, or line drawings.

However, what if your needs require you to search for icons, or certain types of images such as BMPs, GIFs, JPGs, PNGs, or SVGs? Just add the following to the end of your search query:…

Bing Search Engine – Limit Searching to DOC, PDF, PPT, XLS, Other File Types

26 Sep

Force Bing to return not web pages but word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or other types of files.

Instead of searching Bing for web pages, there may be times where you need to find other types of files. Perhaps you are looking for First Aid/CPR presentations, wedding checklists that can be easily printed as PDF files, or amortization tables in the form of Microsoft Excel worksheets.

While performing normal Bing searches may result in other types of files being intermixed with web pages, you can force the results to only contain files of desired types by appending the following to your search query:…
