CES 2014: Fujifilm has updated its X-system roadmap for 2014, adding five lenses to its list of upcoming releases. First up is an extended-range zoom, the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R OIS (28-200mm equivalent). Following this will be two fast zooms, the XF 16-55mm F2.8 R OIS standard zoom, and XF 50-140 F2.8 R OIS (24-83mm and 75-210mm equivalent respectively). All three feature aperture rings and optical stabilisation. They’ll be followed by a ‘high speed wide angle lens’ and ‘super telephoto zoom lens’ in late 2014 / early 2015.

Sony’s new Cyber-shot RX10 marries the 20MP 1-inch BSI-CMOS sensor from the RX100 II with a 24-200mm Zeiss Vario-Sonnar zoom lens, with a constant maximum aperture of F2.8. On paper it’s an impressively versatile package for both still and video capture, and we’ve spent a few days with a pre-production sample to get a feel for how Sony’s most powerful Cyber-shot yet performs. If any design should be simple and intuitive, surely it would be an emergency medical kit – something you make lack time, treatment expertise or even a clear head to operate well in a disaster situation.
This revamped version of the classic Home First Aid Kit by Gabriele Meldaikyte starts with a system colors assigned to different types of typical injury: yellow for burns and scalds, orange for minor cuts and scratches, and red for deep cuts and bleeding. Intuitively, the darker the color on the spectrum, the more serious the situation.
Anyone who has had to work one-handed (due to an other-hand injury and being alone at the time) to open packages, unscrew containers, unroll gauze and treat a wound knows that most products do not make this easy. Hence the other critical aspect of the design: the box can be opened and its contents deployed and its strips of gauze cut by someone who lacks the normal range of human dexterity.
The idea is that someone who may not have familiarized themselves ahead of time can be walked through the process via clear visual cues and step-by-step instructions: “Every injury is described in steps, guiding the casualty through the treatment process. I have provided special tools to enable this one-handed treatment. These include a bandage applicator, where bandage can be applied much faster and can be cut off with integrated blades (replacing scissors). A plaster and dressing applicator that works like a stamp: where you tear off the top protection layer and then you stamp it on the cut, with the remaining layer working as a protection for the next plaster etc.”

Fujifilm has announced the FUJINON XF23mm F1.4 R, a premium fast wideangle lens for its X system mirrorless cameras. It offers the same moderate wideangle view as the fixed-lens X100S, but with an extra stop of brightness. The overall design approach is similar to the company’s recent XF14mm F2.8 R, with distance and depth of field scales for manual focusing, and fully optical (rather than digital) correction of distortion. These dozen doomed ski resorts, like most seasonal winter businesses, can fall off the financial cliff by something as ironically simple as a lack of snow.

Northeastern Missouri might not be the ideal location to set up a ski resort but in 1982 the operators of Rainbow Basin went ahead anyway, and were relatively successful for a while. Just like a favorite downhill run, however, all good things come to an end and for Rainbow Basin, the end came in 1991 when a flood of red ink put a permanent damper on the popular winter recreation spot. “It all came down to weather,” stated former owner Jack Pickett. “It wouldn’t cooperate.”

Foreclosed upon in 1993, Rainbow Basin hasn’t been maintained, renovated, sold, salvaged or re-purposed in the intervening 20 years yet intrepid skiers still find their way onto the un-manicured slopes when weather permits. The chair lifts are inoperable, of course, so getting to the top of the runs has to be an adventure in itself.

Just off Highway 88 close by the Mormon Emigrant Trail lie the gently deteriorating remains of a formerly attractive ski lodge. Though the lodge is rather large and the operation must have been well-funded at its start, time and the weather will not be denied. At this point not even Mitt Romney could resurrect this little piece of Switzerland in the California mountains. The Club Alpino Guadarrama opened in 1947 and was originally named Club Alpino Romate. Situated in the scenic Guadarrama mountains north of Madrid, it was one of Spain’s first alpine resorts and due to its easy access from the Spanish capitol, enjoyed years of popularity.

It’s not certain exactly when Club Alpino Guadarrama closed but it can’t be too long ago as it’s listed as a going concern on at least one travel website. As for the “easy access”, as always that’s a double-edged sword: convenience that once appealed to skiers and snowboarders now serves only looters, vandals and graffiti artists.

CP+ 2013: Casio wants to make cameras that allow non-photographers to take better images, and that could mean large sensor compacts, says Jin Nakayama, Senior General Manager of the company’s QV Digital Camera Division, but don’t expect a mirrorless camera. The company, which makes some of Japan’s best-selling compacts, has a development strategy Nakayama believes will distinguish it from smartphones while also staying a step ahead of its camera rivals, he says.

Filmed at 10mm. A boat in waves, lots of spray, pitching rolling, movement, very intricate detailed waves flying past. Can the camera cope? Watch the video to see. The lens was a Tamron 10-24mm with a polarising filter fitted, the lens was around 10mm when filming, to get an ultra wide view of the boat. The spray and the boat are fast moving and complex, great test to see how the camera copes with moving objects. The new Nikon d5100 has a 16.2 MP CMOS sensor much like that in the D7000, 1080p movie capability and a side-articulated 921K dot 3.0″ tilt/swivel LCD. The D5100 also becomes the first Nikon DSLR to be able to apply special processing filters to stills and video. The company has also introduced the ME-1 external microphone. The camera will be available from this month as a kit with the 18-55mm VR lens for 9.95 while the microphone will retail at 9.99.
