CameraMator – Kickstarter project offers Wi-Fi tethering for DSLRs

15 Jan

CameraMator2.jpg

CameraMator is one of the more interesting photographic gadgets we saw at CES this year. It’s a Kickstarter-funded Wi-Fi tethering accessory for Canon and Nikon DSLRs that gives remote live view, camera triggering and image download to Android and iOS devices. The device itself mounts on the hot shoe and can connect to a local Wi-Fi network or peer-to-peer with the mobile device. The standard USB lead that comes with the camera gives the unit access to the camera’s key features. Find out more over on Connect.

App Review : DSLR Controller for Android & Canon DSLR’s

05 Dec

DSLR Controller is the first and only app that allows you to fully control your Canon EOS DSLR from your Android device, with nothing more than a USB cable. No computer or laptop required, no root required, no Wi-Fi required. All you need is a compatible mobile device, a compatible camera, and the right USB cable. I used my Samsung Galaxy Siii with the Offical USB Adapter, i also have used a Toshiba AT1010 Tablet which has a USB 2.0 port. The 15 Most Popular DSLRS Among Our Readers

02 Dec

Every few months we like to report back to the dPS community which cameras (and other gear) are most popular with our readers. Today we’re going to take a look at the highest selling DSLRs among our readers over the last 4 months (as ranked by the reports that Amazon gives us*).

As usual you’ll see it is largely a battle between Canon and Nikon (who dominate this class of camera) and that at the top of the list we see entry level DSLRS most popular (mainly due to their price). Further down the list we see more serious (and expensive) contenders.

Note: Amazon currently have some great specials at the moment on cameras and gear as part of their Holiday Promotions.

One of the ways dPS is able to cover its costs and be a sustainable business is that we earn a small commission when readers make a purchase from Amazon after clicking on our links (including those above). While no personal details are passed on we do get an overall report from Amazon about what was bought and are able to create this list.

Nikon 50mm 1.8 pancake lens comparison for DSLRs

10 Nov

In this episode I talk about a couple of affordable manual pancake lenses from the film photography era that work great with video DSLRs. I compare two versions of Nikon’s 50mm 1.8, one with multi-coating, and one without. Official Lens names: Nikon Nikkor AI-S 50mm 1.8 NEW MIJ Nikon Series E 50mm 1.8 NEW MIJ Blog post: fromtheraw.blogspot.com These will work great on DX Nikon DSLRs for video or photos in Manual mode (‘M’ on the dial) only with Live view turned on. -soon I will post a video with a trick I found out to get them to work without Live View, comment if you need to know now! Please check your compatibility first! For Canon or other DSLRs, or micro four thirds cameras please look into lens adapters, they are a great option to get some inexpensive older Nikon glass on whatever you shoot with. Chainfire creates Android tethered control app for Canon DSLRs

07 Aug

App developer Chainfire has created a program for tethered shooting of Canon DSLRs using Android 3.0-powered tablets. Its ‘DSLR Controller’ app uses a USB connection to provide a high level of control over Canon DSLRs. In addition to Android 3.0 (also known as Honeycomb) tablets, DSLR Controller can also be used on Samsung’s Galaxy S2 smartphone. Beta version 0.5 of the app is currently available for around $ 8.50 from the Android Market and offers a wide range of control options, including touch focus, histogram, bulb capture and the ability to change many of the camera’s shooting settings. Additional functions, including time lapse, video recording and image playback are still being worked-on. Chainfire says it plans to provide Nikon support once the Canon features are complete.
