Luna Display turns the iPad into a second screen, adds touch control to the Mac

24 Aug

The makers of the Astropad, an iOS app that turns your iPad into a graphics tablet for the Mac, have announced Luna Display, the first and currently only hardware solution that turns an iPad into a wireless second display for your Mac computer.

Luna is available for USB-C or Mini DisplayPort and works with your existing WiFi. The device allows you to use your Mac directly from the iPad with full support using external keyboards, Apple Pencil and Apple touch interactions including pinching, panning and tapping.

Its makers say that Luna, unlike software-based solutions, can tap into the processing power of your Mac’s GPU, allowing for a virtually lag-free user experience and images without glitching, artifacting or blurriness.

The team behind Luna is funding the project on Kickstarter where you can pre-order the device for $ 69. Delivery is expected for May 2018. The crowdfunding project has already reached its goal multiple times over, so production and shipping should go ahead as planned.

17 Highly Detailed Images That Display Texture

08 Aug

I hope you enjoy this detailed image collection of subjects with a lot of texture. To capture texture in an image requires a few elements to come together – the right lighting, the right camera angle, and a good degree of image sharpness.

I’ll start you off with a couple of my own images, and then we’ll branch out to see what a few other photographers have done to capture texture with their cameras.

Red just launched a $1200 smartphone with a 5.7″ holographic display

10 Jul

Cinema camera maker Red has announced its first foray into the smartphone market with Hydrogen One, an Android device with a 5.7″ display. That screen is the center of attention in the limited information Red has provided, emphasizing its ability to switch from a traditional 2D display to a 3D/VR/AR/holographic display thanks to ‘nanotechnology.’

Red states that the Hydrogen One will integrate with its family of professional video cameras as a monitor and user interface for Scarlet, Weapon and Epic cameras. It will also offer a proprietary algorithm to convert stereo sound into ‘multi-dimensional audio,’ a microSD card slot and USB-C charging.

The Hydrogen One will be able to host modular accessories a la Moto mods, as mentioned in the announcement and evidenced by the contacts pictured in the image above. Red mentions that this will be a means by which the device will be able to capture ‘higher quality motion and still images as well as Hydrogen format holographic images.’ No details are provided about an on-board camera at this time.

The Red Hydrogen One is being offered in Aluminum for $ 1195 and Titanium for $ 1595 as special pre-order prices. Shipping is planned for Q1 of 2018; Final pricing for the device has yet to be determined.

Varjo ’20/20′ VR headset to offer ‘human eye resolution’ bionic display

Poor display resolution is one of the hurdles VR needs to overcome if it’s going to gain traction with a larger audience. That’s why Finnish company Varjo is actively developing a virtual reality/augmented reality headset codenamed ’20/20,’ a moniker that refers to its ‘human eye resolution’ display. While the Oculus Rift offers approximately 1.2MP for each eye, Varjo aims to far exceed that resolution at 70MP, though with a twist: the ’20/20′ headset tracks which objects the wearer is looking at, rendering those objects at a very high resolution while objects in the wearer’s peripheral vision are lower resolution.

Varjo hasn’t gone into great detail about the technology behind its headset, though Engadget reports that it is using what the company calls a ‘bionic display’ alongside ‘foveated eye tracking,’ the combination of which makes its VR ’10 years ahead of the current state-of-the-art.’ The company claims to employ scientists who previously worked at Intel, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, among others.

The company goes on to claim that its ’20/20′ headset can also be used for augmented reality and mixed reality applications, though details on both are slight at this time. Likewise, information on Varjo’s launch plans are unclear, though the company states that pro-tier ‘Varjo-branded products’ will start shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Varjo offers several photos comparing its display technology with that of existing VR headsets here.

Dell’s new 8K display is pretty amazing, but do you need it?

27 May

The video industry keeps telling us that we’ll all be using 8K displays in a few years. It’s true that once you see 8K video, you can’t unsee it. It’s really pretty amazing. Until recently, however, seeing one for yourself meant going to a tradeshow like NAB or CES, where you could use a magnifying glass to try to see the pixels.

But that’s no longer true thanks to Dell, which is now selling a 32-inch 8K monitor for the not-too-surprising price of $ 4999. Just how good is it? In this video, Linus Tech Tips shows just what you’re getting when you buy one. It’s pretty impressive, but even Linus acknowledges that the difference between 8K and a ‘standard’ 5K display is “not as noticeable as you might think.”

Are you ready to go 8K? What would it take to convince you to take the plunge?

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with ‘infinity display’ and multi-frame processing

31 Mar

Samsung has today announced its new flagship smartphones Galaxy S8 and S8+ at simultaneous events in London and New York. The new devices’ outstanding feature is the new infinity display which combines curved display edges with minimal bezels, allowing for a screen that covers almost the entire front of the devices. This means the home button is now implemented underneath the display but works in the same way as before.

Display size is pretty much the only difference between the new models. The S8 comes with a 5.8″ screen, and at 6.2″ the S8+ is a touch larger. The 2960 x 1440 resolution is the same on both new phones, though.

While the new displays looks impressive, the camera department has unfortunately less innovation to show off. From a hardware point of view the S8 generation is, at least on paper, identical to its predecessor. A 1/2.5″ 12MP sensor with dual-pixel AF is combined with a fast F1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization.

There is some news on the software side of things, though. A new multi-frame technology captures three photos and then selects the clearest image and uses the other two to reduce motion blur. Samsung says the merging of frames also results in better detail and exposures in low light. A new camera user interface allows for easier one-handed operation. The camera resolution at the front has been upped from 5 to 8MP and there is now also a face-detection AF. At F1.7 the aperture is the same as in the main camera.

In terms of processing power the S8 and S8+ offer the very best. Android 7.0 is, depending on region powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s own Exynos 8895. 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage are on board as well. The new models are also IP68 certified for environmental protection and come with both a fingerprint reader on the back and an iris scanner for increased security. Samsung’s new Bixby voice assistant is on board as well and the optional DeX dock converts the devices into a Windows Continuum-style desktop. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be available from April 21st. No pricing information has been made available yet.

Key specifications:

  • 12MP 1/2.5″ CMOS sensor with 1.4-micron pixels
  • F1.7 aperture
  • OIS
  • On-sensor phase detection
  • 4K video
  • 1080p@120fps slow-motion
  • 8MP, F1.7 front camera with AF
  • 5.8″ (S8) / 6.2″ (S8+) display with 2960×1440 resolution
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 8895 chipset (depending on region)
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB storage
  • microSD-slot up to 256GB
  • 3000mAh (S8) / 3000mAh (S8+) battery
  • Fingerprint sensor and iris scanner
  • IP68 certification
