13 Jun

VonWong_Underwater_Tulamben-11.jpg

Benjamin Von Wong isn’t afraid of a little drama. His work incorporates elements of fantasy, turning models into otherworldly creatures and fire-breathers. So who else might you expect to find at the helm of an underwater shoot with two models, a team of divers and a shipwreck? Yep, he went there. Take a look at some of the photos and watch a behind the scenes video to see how he pulled it off. See gallery

Cutting Edges: Layered Back-Lit Paper Art Gets Deep & Dark

paper art cave people

Together, Hari & Deepti (Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker) turn sets of two-dimensional cutouts into vivid and haunting three-dimensional dioramas, often set in shadowy fantasy spaces.

Despite the darkness of their subject matter, in ordinary lighting conditions there is almost nothing to be seen of these pieces. The work waits in the shadows, so to speak, popping out when you turn out the lights and turn on the LEDs inside each individual light box.

Loosely analogous to a book, perhaps, the story plays out in the space between the pages, each one individually flat but, together with illumination, adding up to something more than the sum of its parts.

While most of their works are relatively small, a recent project challenged them to build at a much bigger scale, creating an entirely monstrous (pun intended) New York cityscape (shown below).

From the artists: “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”

Deep Roots: Underground Farm in London Air-Raid Tunnels

21 Feb

100 feet beneath the surface, below even the level of the London Underground, there is another layer of World War Two shelters where something amazing is coming to life.

Richard Ballard and Steven Dring are behind Growing Underground, experimentally introducing hydroponic systems to 2.5 acres of abandoned subterranean passages right in the UK’s capital city.

The closed-loop nature of their approach means that weather and environmental factors (like rodents and runoff) are nothing to worry about. There are other advantages of their situation, too: 70% less water is needed to grow below ground, and their agricultural system is self-recycling, low-maintenance, pesticide-free and carbon-neutral.

Their unique and central location means they can provide ultra-local micro-greens to restaurants, wholesalers and retail vendors right above where they grow, all in a matter of hours.

Their planned crops so far range from pea shoots and broccoli to garlic chives and mustard leaf, not to mention edible flowers and miniature vegetables. Mushrooms and tomatoes are also on the horizon.

From the company: “Because we have total control over their environment, each tiny leaf tastes as amazing as the last and because they are unaffected by the weather and seasonal changes, we can reduce the need to import crops and drastically reduce the food miles for retailers and consumers.”

Off The Deep End: 12 Abandoned Swimming Pools

25 Feb

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned swimming pools
An abandoned swimming pool is kind of like a fish out of water in that, well, both are out of water. As far as pools go, their dry and empty aspect makes them seem exposed, naked, incomplete and bereft of purpose. Left high, dry and drained of liquid assets, these 12 abandoned swimming pools expose their bottoms for all to see. As one might expect, it’s not always a pretty sight.

Public Indoor Pool – Pripyat, Ukraine

The irradiated ghost town of Pripyat is chock full of abandonments for one simple reason: the 1986 Chernobyl disaster destroyed the town without harming any of its structures. The fate of its people are another story altogether. Swimming Pool Building 1, highlighted here, is the largest of Pripyat’s public indoor pools.

Before 1986 this pool must have been a lovely place to hang out with friends and family. Attractive styling, generous windows and modern conveniences served to please anyone from casual leisure swimmers to aspiring Olympians with their eyes on the prize. Kudos to Timm Suess for capturing this eerie echoing abandoned pool in the prime of its radioactive afterlife.

Durham City Baths – Durham, UK

The mood of the Great Depression in northeastern England lightened a little when on September 28th, 1932, the Durham City Baths and Washhouses opened. The 75ft by 30ft main pool was overlooked by viewing balconies with wrought iron railings decorated with seahorse, dolphin and waterspout designs. Overhead, a striking arch-ribbed roof featuring a central greenhouse let in natural light. The townspeople of Durham enjoyed their pool for 76 years before it finally closed for good in 2008.

Plans to demolish the pool and its associated facilities were put on hold due to the 2008-09 financial crisis and subsequent recession. In the meantime, vandals and graffiti “artists” have put their inimitable stamp on the pool. Note the difference between the relatively unmarred pool at top and the later, trashed version above documented four years later in March 2012.

D. R. Plaister Aquatic House – Hobart, Tasmania, AU

Originally the Hobart Tepid Baths, this all-season, heated facility was opened by the governor or Tasmania on November 10th, 1938. The complex was known as the Amateur House in the 1940s and it was finally renamed to D. R. Plaister Aquatic House in 1991 after Doug Plaister, the former Mayor of Hobart (1976 to 1984) who ran the local education department’s swimming program at the 55-yard-long pool.

Now privately owned but in a terminal state of abuse and disuse, the complex is inhabited by squatters and the homeless with little or no security preventing unlawful trespass. The area is slated for redevelopment but it seems only the brickwork facade of the main building will be retained and preserved.

Kentucky Dirt Diving

Louisville abandoned swimming pool no diving(images via: Flickrized)

Clueless male model Derek Zoolander had a school for ants; Louisville’s Crescent Hill neighborhood has a swimming pool for worms. This exceptional image was captured by Flickr user Flickrized who snapped it on October 1st, 2007 using a Nikon D80 camera. While not technically abandoned, it’s pretty obvious no one will be practicing their backstroke here anytime soon. “No Diving” indeed.

DEEP 3D – SPACE TUNNEL HD – [Red/Cyan]

01 Aug

DONT HAVE 3D GLASSES?? You could try this Audio Illusion where you use headphones instead 🙂 www.youtube.com My fascination with space drove me to make this 3D video. What do you think? Check out my other 3D stuff at 4Dtees.com or Subscribe for my next videos 🙂

Here’s a shot at editing footage in iMovie shot with a Sony Bloggie 3D. If you watch this on a computer, you should use anaglyph (red/blue) 3D glasses. If you watch it on YouTube through and HD 3D TV, use whatever format glasses your TV requires. As you can see, I haven’t figured out how to do titles in iMovie that work with the rest of the 3D duo image.
