Free Online Tool creates ‘Hyperlapse’ videos using Google Street View

11 Apr

Online user experience company Teehan + Lax has created a free tool for creating ‘hyperlapse’ videos using Google Street View. The term ‘hyperlapse’ describes timelapse videos which incorporate camera movement – something that is typically extremely difficult and time-consuming to perfect. The team at Teehan + Lax began experimenting with Google Street View as a guide for choosing locations, but realised that it could be used as source material. Click through for more details.

Blackmagic Design has announced a pocket-sized 1080p movie camera capable of 422 ProRes capture with promises of lossless CinemaDNG to be added via firmware. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera uses a Super 16 crop (around 12.5 x 7.4mm), of the sensor used in its existing camera, and an ‘active’ Micro Four Thirds lens mount, giving full aperture control of native lenses. The camera can capture footage in Apple’s 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes format Blackmagic promising to add the open, lossless CinemaDNG Raw standard later. The company has said this will cost just $ 995 and be available from July.

Fujifilm creates X20 enthusiast compact with X-trans CMOS sensor

08 Jan

fujifilm_x20_2.png

Fujifilm has announced the X20 – a substantially upgraded re-working of its high-end enthusiast compact. The biggest changes over the X10 are the adoption of the X-Trans color filter pattern from the company’s mirrorless cameras, along with an LCD added to the optical viewfinder to allow shooting information to be overlaid. A faster processor and on-chip phase detection elements promise fast focusing while the addition of a ‘Q’ quick-menu button should also improve the camera’s usability.

Photographer creates time-lapse showing D600 ‘dust’ accumulation

22 Nov

Screen_Shot_2012-11-21_at_12.02.24_PM.png

Canadian photographer Kyle Clemens has created a timelapse video which shows the slow accumulation of debris on the sensor of his brand new Nikon D600. When we reviewed the D600 we expressed concern about the propensity of its sensor to gather specks of debris, and Clements raises the troubling possibility that whatever it is that’s ending up on the D600’s sensor could be coming from inside the camera. Click through for the full video and a link to Kyle Clements’ blog where he investigates the issue.

Action Figure Booth: 3D Printer Creates Custom Figurines

16 Nov

[ By Steph in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Let’s hope this concept catches on: a photo booth alternative that, instead of printing photos, creates an instant 3D action figure that looks just like you. Opening to the public at Tokyo’s EYE OF GYRE gallery space on November 24th, the world’s first 3D printing photo booth is perhaps one of the most fun examples of 3D printing yet.

OMOTE 3D’s pop-up store features a conventional-looking photography studio with a modern, geometric backdrop. Portrait subjects are asked to stand still for 15 minutes while their entire bodies are scanned in 360 degrees with a hand-held 3D scanner.

This data is then entered into a computer, where the ‘photographers’ add such details as clothing color and texture. The 3D color printer then produces the original figurines, which are available in sizes ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters.

While most of the figures already produced are pretty straight-forward portraits, it would be fun to do them in custom superhero costumes and unexpected poses (assuming you can hold them for the required amount of time.)

Math + Paper Craft: Computer Scientist Creates 3D Origami

26 Oct

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

A single sheet of paper becomes a complex three-dimensional object in the hands of Jun Mitani, a computer scientist who uses geometric modeling software to aid him in his designs. Mitani has been studying algorithms and user interfaces for generating 3D shapes that can be realized with folding paper in a twist on the traditional craft of origami.

Not only does Mitani fold these mathematical origami objects himself, he also designs computer software to come up with the shapes. Mitani’s origami designs have ‘rotational symmetry’, meaning they look the same after a certain amount of rotation.

Mitani scores folding lines in a sheet of paper and then folds it by hand. While large sheets of paper don’t work well for complex origami shapes due to a lack of structural strength, Mitani is beginning to experiment with other materials, collaborating with industrial companies. That might reduce one issue that plagues Mitani in his work – he has suffered from, he says, “a few thousand” paper cuts.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t have much interest in folding origami, but in papercraft,” says Mitani in an interview with The Creators Project. “I fabricated a lot of paper models, such as cars, ships, buildings, and animals, etc. by cutting and gluing pieces of paper. I felt that origami, just folding, was too restricted. On the other hand, I was enthusiastic about the computer, which my father bought when I was a first-year student in elementary school. As a fusion of two objects of interest, papercraft and computer, the theme of my Ph.D. thesis became a method for designing paper models with the computer.”

Richard Franiec creates accessory grip for Sony RX100

01 Aug

RX100_Franeic.png

Accessory maker Richard Franiec has unveiled his design for a custom grip for the Sony RX100. As usual for one of Franiec’s grips, the anodized aluminium accessory is held in place with 3M VHB tape, which holds it firmly in place but can be removed, without damage, later. The design follows the pattern of his existing grips and doesn’t protrude beyond the camera’s retracted lens barrel, so that pocketability isn’t reduced. The grip will be available from August 2012 at a cost of $ 34.95, plus shipping.
