As part of its ‘AW’ launches, Nikon has announced the Nikkor 1 AW 10mm f/2.8 and 1 AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses. Both lenses are existing designs built into waterproof, shockproof housings and are only compatible with the Nikon 1 AW1 body. The 1 AW 10mm f/2.8 offers a 27mm equivalent field-of-view and will be sold separately for around $ 200/£300. The Nikkor 1 AW 11-27.5mm zoom offers a rather limited 30-74mm equivalent range and will only be available as part of a kit with the camera – meaning there are no image-stabilized AW lenses yet.

Sharp thinking: Nikon creates selectable strength low-pass filter

30 Aug

shared:NikonLogo.png

Nikon has patented a technology that can adjust a camera’s low-pass (AA) filter based on the situation. By using an electronically controlled liquid crystal panel, the AA filter can either be turned on and off, or set to ‘normal’ or ‘high’ intensity. The first design would allow for a D800 that become a D800E at the push of a button. The second design would have a mild anti-aliasing effect for stills, and a stronger effect to reduce moiré in movies. More details on this exciting development after the link.

25 Jul

Manfrotto has announced a ‘Top Lock’ quick release system for its tripod heads that’s compatible with standard Arca Swiss-type plates. It uses a clamp design that allows the camera to dropped in from above rather than slid in from the side, and three bubble levels to help keep the camera straight. The Top Lock release is available as an add-on adapter, or pre-installed on the company’s top-end 054, 055, 056 and 468MG ball heads.

French student creates SLR using 3D printer

09 Jul

3d-camera-top.jpg

We normally don’t cover film cameras on DPReview, but this one’s too cool to pass up. Twenty-four year old Léo Marius has created a 35mm film SLR using a 3D printer, complete with a viewfinder and compatibility for any lens mount (once the appropriate mount is created and attached, of course). The camera isn’t available for sale, but Marius provides instructions for creating your own. Click through for more details, and pictures of the homemade camera.

Bell Labs creates lensless single-pixel camera

05 Jun

lensless2.jpg

Scientists at Bell Labs have built a prototype camera that uses no lens and a single-pixel sensor. This idea is based around a grid of small apertures that each direct light rays from different parts of the scene to the sensor, and can be opened and closed independently. The sensor makes a series of measurements with different combinations of open apertures, and uses this data to reconstruct the scene in front of the camera. No lens to focus the resultant image means infinite depth of field and low cost. Click through for more details and a link to the original research.

Michael Markieta, a transportation planner at global engineering and design firm Arup, has created a series of beautiful visualizations of aircraft flight paths as they span the globe. Using different shades for short and long-distant flights, the images map the world in a ghostly spiderweb of connections from airports small and large. Markieta has marked more than 58,000 flightpaths and the results are stunning. Click through for images (via BBC.co.uk)

Solar Socket: Portable Plug-In Creates Free Energy to Go

22 May

window socket

With batteries running low, your eye roams the room for a place to plug in, but then you remember: you brought your own power supply. Portable, easy and green, this solar socket design is a stroke of genius, able to both generate and hold a charge.

window portable power generator

A suction cup lets you stick the converter to any flat glazed surface, putting photovoltaic panels on the outside and a customary energy outlet on the other. And if you are worried about what happens at night or in overcast conditions: the device itself can store energy for in-place or mobile use.

window mounted solar cells

Kyuho Song & Boa Oh have added a few other functional quirks to the design: rotate your charger plug and you kill the power, spinning a circular cut-off switch built into the face plate. There is a second manual on/off switch on the bottom as well.

Canon creates ‘Video Camera X–series-look’ Picture Style for movie work

14 May

EOS-1DC.png

Canon has created a ‘Video Camera X-series look’ Picture Style for its EOS cameras, specifically designed for movie work. As its name suggests, it’s designed to match the colour look of the company’s X-series professional camcorders. It produces low contrast, low saturation footage that’s better suited to post-production grading processes than the cameras’ existing options. It’s downloadable now from Canon’s website and can be installed on almost any Canon EOS model, from the movie-optimized EOS-1D C to the mirrorless EOS M.

Aptina creates faster 14MP 1″ sensor capable of 80 fps and 4K video

18 Apr

Logo.png

Sensor maker Aptina has announced a 14MP 1″-type sensor for use in mirrorless and video cameras. The AR1411HS enters the range alongside the existing 10MP model and offers even faster shooting capabilities. The 14MP chip can shoot full-resolution images at up to 80 fps and can shoot either 4K or Quad HD (allowing high quality 4:2:2 color) at up to 60 fps. The company suggests the 1″ format (actually 13.2 x 8.8mm) offers an effective balance of image quality, price and capabilities to make a sensible middle ground between the tiny 1/2.3″ sensors in most compacts and the APS-C sensors used in many mirrorless models and DSLRs.

Citizen Finetech Miyota creates 3.69m dot equivalent EVF

11 Apr

130409vf.png

Citizen Finetech Miyota has developed an LCD panel for electronic viewfinders of digital cameras its claiming is the highest resolution available. It offers a 1280×960 pixel display (equivalent to 3.69 million dots). This exceeds the 2.36m dot (1024 x 768 pixel) resolution of the current Sony OLED and Epson LCD units. It uses a field-sequential design, showing red, green and blue information in sequence rather than being able to show them all at the same time, but the panels 120Hz design should avoid color breakup (tearing) the company says. The panel will enter mass produced in summer 2013.
