Nikon quietly announces Coolpix B600, A1000 compact cameras

Nikon has quietly announced the upcoming availability of two new compact cameras, the Coolpix B600 and the Coolpix A1000. The B600 fills a gap between Nikon’s current Coolpix B500 and B700 cameras while the A1000 is a lower-resolution successor to Nikon’s A900.

Nikon Coolpix B600

The Coolpix B600 is a bridge-style camera with a 60x optical zoom lens with an equivalent focal length range between 24-1440mm. The lens features Nikon’s Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) technology — rated for three stops of compensation — and offers a dedicated macro mode.

Full specs for the B600 are yet to be released, but from what’s known so far, the B600 houses a 16-megapixel sensor that’s also capable of shooting 1080p30 video. The B600 also features Nikon’s Active D-Lighting, which is designed to reduce the loss of detail in highlights and shadows of high-contrast scenes.

On the rear of the camera is a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD monitor with an anti-reflective coating. Like its P600 counterpart, the B600 includes target-finding AF and multiple creative modes for both photos and videos.

Nikon Coolpix A1000

The Coolpix A1000, an apparent successor to the A900, is a compact camera with a 35x optical zoom lens with an equivalent focal length range between 24-840mm. Like the B600, it too uses Nikon’s Hybrid VR technology and Active D-Lighting.

Inside the A1000 is a 1/2.3-inch 16-megapxiel backside illuminated CMOS sensor — a drop from the 20-megapixel sensor inside the A900 — with a standard sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400. The A1000 has Raw photo capture in Nikon’s NRW format and is capable of recording 4K30 video.

The A1000 features 1166k-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch tilting 1036k-dot touchscreen LCD display on the rear of the camera. Nikon has also included its SnapBridge technology, meaning the A1000 can be paired via its built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with supported smartphones and tablets to review and transfer photos on the go.

Pricing and availability

The Nikon Coolpix B600 and A1000 are currently available for pre-order at Wex Photo and Video for £329 / €359 and £409 / €449, respectively.

Nikon hasn’t mentioned whether or not the B600 and A1000 will be available in the U.S. market. DPReview has contacted Nikon for details on the exact availability and will update this article accordingly if and when it gets a response.

Nikon releases the high-power zoom COOLPIX B600

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the COOLPIX B600, a compact digital camera equipped with a high-performance 60x optical zoom NIKKOR lens.

The COOLPIX B600 employs a 60x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a range of equivalent focal lengths beginning at wide-angle 24 mm*1 and ending at super-telephoto 1440 mm*1 (Dynamic Fine Zoom further expands the zoom ratio to 120x*2), making it possible for users to enjoy super-telephoto photography without compromising sharp and clear resolution.

The camera has an effective pixel count of 16.0 megapixels and supports a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. Its combination of backside illumination CMOS sensor and EXPEED high-performance image-processing engine captures superior still and video quality, even at high sensitivities. The COOLPIX B600 is also equipped with a variety of functions that enable a diverse power of expression, including 19 scene modes, as well as a Creative mode that offers a total of 36 different effects.

The camera also features functions that make it easier to use as a high-power zoom model and ensure increased operability, such as a Snap-back zoom button and Side zoom control, as well as a shooting mode dial that enables immediate switching between frequently used shooting modes. It is also SnapBridge compatible, so high-quality images can be automatically downloaded to a smart device*3 for easy sharing.

The COOLPIX B600 is also equipped with a Vibration Reduction (VR) mechanism capable of reducing the effects of camera shake to the same degree as would a 3.0-stop* increase in shutter speed with still-image photography, and 4-axis Hybrid VR that effectively reduces blur with movie recording. This allows users to capture sharp photos and movies with noticeably less blur, even at the maximum telephoto position and in dark or dimly lit surroundings.

    A constant connection between the camera and a smart device is possible using the SnapBridge app, built-in Wi-Fi®, and Bluetooth® technology. Not only can images recorded with the camera be transferred to a smart device automatically*1, they can also be automatically uploaded to Nikon’s photo sharing service, NIKON IMAGE SPACE*2. The SnapBridge app supports a number of other features as well, including the ability to add copyright information and comments, such as exposure information to images, and to automatically synchronize camera date/time and location information with that of the smart device. SnapBridge also makes remote shooting of still images possible with real-time display of the view through the camera’s lens in the smart device screen.

Nikon releases the COOLPIX A1000

A stylish and compact high-power zoom model with a built-in electronic viewfinder providing superior image quality and operability

Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of the COOLPIX A1000, a stylish compact digital camera equipped with an electronic viewfinder that supports 35x optical zoom.

The COOLPIX A1000 boasts a compact size for ease of portability, and comes equipped with a 35x optical zoom lens that covers a range of equivalent focal lengths — from the wide-angle 24 mm*1 to the super-telephoto 840 mm*1 (Dynamic Fine Zoom further expands the zoom ratio to 70x*2). This allows users to easily enjoy super-telephoto photography that delivers images with sharp and clear resolution.

The COOLPIX A1000 supports a maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. The camera is also equipped with a lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function for still-image shooting, and hybrid vibration reduction (VR) for movie recording that is effective even when recording 4K UHD movies. The camera’s Active D-Lighting function reduces the loss of details in highlights and shadows in high-contrast situations such as backlit scenes. The function can be applied to both still images and movies. Additionally, photos can be captured in RAW (NRW) format, which allows users to process and edit images according to their own artistic preferences and intent without compromising image quality.

The COOLPIX A1000 is also equipped with a number of features designed to make this high-power zoom model easier to use. These include an approximately 1166k-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder with an eye sensor, a 3-inch, approximately 1036k-dot, tilting TFT LCD monitor with a touch screen, Snap-back zoom button and Side zoom control, as well as four exposure modes (P/S/A/M).     The COOLPIX A1000 captures the finest details with its ability to record high-resolution 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) movies.     The COOLPIX A1000 is equipped with an approximately 1166k-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder has an eye sensor that automatically switches the display between viewfinder and camera monitor as the camera is lowered or raised to the eye. Not only does viewfinder shooting achieve a steadier shooting stance that helps reduce camera shake – by making only the recordable angle of view visible – it also allows the user to concentrate on the intended subject, aiding the process of composing shots.

    The camera is also equipped with a 3-inch tilting monitor for which a touch panel has been newly adopted. The tilting mechanism makes shooting from high and low angles easier, and the approximately 1036k-dot LCD monitor, which supports a high-definition display and intuitive touch operation, enables smooth camera operations from shooting to image playback. In addition, the monitor uses an anti-reflection coating that makes viewing under strong lighting easier, ensuring better visibility even when outdoors in harsh lighting.

    The COOLPIX A1000 is also equipped with a Snap-back zoom button that temporarily shifts zoom position to the wide-angle side to some degree for easy framing when shooting fast-moving subjects or during super-telephoto shooting. Side zoom control that enables smooth zooming even while recording movies has also been added on the side of the lens. Other functions, including aperture, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation, or white balance setting can also be assigned to the Side zoom control.

Zeiss announces ZX1 full-frame compact with fixed 35mm F2 lens

Zeiss has just announced the ZX1, the company’s first-ever digital camera. It comes with a 37.4MP full-frame image sensor, fixed 35mm Distagon F2 lens and a huge 4.3″ touchscreen with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels to augment its physical controls. Zeiss has also teamed up with Adobe to offer full Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC capability in the camera itself. It’s designed to allow you to shoot, edit and share on the fly.

The ZX1 offers 512GB of external memory and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity

Zeiss says both the 37.4MP sensor and 35mm F2 lens were developed in-house and were designed from the outset to be matched with one another, not unlike Leica’s Q and Sony’s RX1 series. Unlike the Leica, however, the ZX1 does not come with any form of image stabilization. The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 30cm (11.8″) and the optical formula comes in at 8 elements in 5 groups.

While the ZX1 does not have a memory card slot, it does have 512GB of internal memory, which the company claims is enough to store approximately 6,800 Raw files in DNG format (or up to 50,000 JPEG files). Zeiss’ ZX1 website does claim that you can connect an external USB drive to the camera to offload images. The camera offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity. The company will also offer over-the-air software updates.

The ZX1 comes with an electronic viewfinder using an OLED panel at full HD (1920×1080) resolution and a magnification of 0.74x. There’s a flash hot-shoe, but no flash is built into the camera body. The ZX1 offers single and continuous autofocus, though we don’t yet know if continuous focus is allowed at the maximum burst speed of 3fps. Exposure is taken care of courtesy a leaf shutter in the lens.

The ZX1 is designed to allow you to shoot, edit and share on the fly.

Since we live in 2018 and 4K is everywhere, it’s no surprise that the ZX1 is capable of capturing UHD 4K at up to 30fps, and Full HD video at up to 60fps.

The ZX1 appears light on controls, but the large touchscreen – with an unusual curved design – will help users take more control over their photographs, as well as the editing process.

There’s no word on pricing, but the ZX1 will be available in ‘early 2019.’ Stay tuned for more updates as we get them.

Think Tank updates its Hydrophobia rain covers, introduces new compact ‘Emergency’ line

Think Tank Photo has released the latest versions of its Hydrophobia rain covers and introduced a new pair of compact rain covers it calls the Emergency Rain Cover.

The Hydrophobia V3.0 Rain Covers come in five different configurations to fit various DSLR cameras and Sony full-frame mirrorless camera setups. In Think Tank Photo’s own words, the Hydrophobia V3.0 Rain Covers are ‘considered the most protective weather protection on the market.’

Hydrophobia V3.0 Rain Covers are made of a three-layer material and feature a DWR coating for extra protection against moisture. The stitches across the entire cover are seam-sealed and a rainproof front element cover is included so your lens doesn’t get splashed when sitting idle.

If you don’t feel like carrying an all-out solution for keeping your gear dry, Think Tank Photo has also released a new thinned-out version of its rain covers. They’re called Emergency Rain Covers and as the name suggests, they’re a more compact, lightweight solution for keeping your gear safe from the elements in emergency situations.

Emergency Rain Covers come in two sizes: small and medium — and they weigh just 99g/3.5oz and 114g/4oz, respectively. Compared to the approximately 300g/10.5oz of the full-size Hydrophobia Rain Covers, it’s quite the weight savings.

The small is meant to keep a gripped or standard camera body protects with smaller primes or zooms attached. Specifically, Think Tank Photo mentions 16–35mm F2.8, 14–24mm F2.8, 24–105mm F4 and 24–70mm F2.8 lenses, but it’s safe to say most super-wide to standard lenses (35-70mm) should work fine. The medium Emergency Rain Cover can also keep a gripped or standard camera body protected with a 24–70mm F2.8 or 70–200mm F2.8 lens attached. Again, there are plenty of other lenses that would work beyond the two Think Tank Photo mentioned.

All of the rain covers are currently available to purchase through Think Tank Photo’s online shop. The Hydrophobia Rain Covers start at $ 115 for the 24-70 size and go up to $ 150 for the massive 300-600 version. The small and medium emergency rain covers retail for $ 35 and $ 40, respectively.

Profoto launches compact 250Ws B10 studio flash

After last week’s teaser, lighting manufacturer Profoto has announced its new ‘small big’ product. The B10 is designed to be used as studio flash head but in a very small body, and has a powerful continuous light source for videographers as well. The 250Ws unit is fully wireless with a removable lithium ion battery and output control via the company’s AirTTL system.

The B10 can also be controlled via the Profoto smartphone app that allows users to adjust flash power as well as the continuous light’s brightness and color temperature. A new Creative Capture feature that lets users preview a scene through the smaertphone’s camera and adjust lights at the same time to achieve the desired effect. The picture can then be captured through the app so the results can be inspected to check exposure and light positioning. The app also offers users the means to download and update firmware as it becomes available.

The lithium ion battery that powers the B10 can be charged while in use, and will provide up to 75 minutes of full power continuous lighting

The continuous LED light has a maximum output of 2500 lm and can be dimmed between 10 and a 100%, with temperature changed between 3000-6500K. The lithium ion battery that powers the B10 can be charged while in use in the head, and will provide up to 75 minutes of full power continuous lighting or 400 full power flashes. It is said to charge in less than an hour and a half.

The B10 measures 11cm / 4.3in wide, is 17.5 / 6.9in long and 10cm / 3.9in high – and it weighs 1.5 kg / 3.3 lbs including the battery. The stand clamp can be removed to fit the light on a tripod, and there are 12 OCF small light modifiers to fit the head, as well as 120 from the full-size range.

Canon Speedlite EL-100 external flash is compact yet powerful

Buried among its new full-frame mirrorless system and new lenses, Canon also snuck out a new external flash: the Speedlite EL-100. This compact flash, which weighs just 190g (6.7oz) has plenty of power, with a guide number of 26m (85ft) at ISO 100. The EL-100 runs on two AA batteries and has a minimum recycling time of 5.8 seconds.

The flash can be tilted both horizontally and vertically for bounce capability, and it also has a manual zoom head. In addition to a ‘set it and forget it’ Auto mode, stroboscopic and 2nd-curtain options are also available. Despite its $ 199 price tag, the EL-100 is able to serve as both an optical transmitter and receiver, supporting 3 groups and 4 channels.

As mentioned above, Canon’s latest Speedlite will cost $ 199 when it ships in October.

Canon is also introducing a new compact and lightweight Speedlite, the EL-100. Sony Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99 compact high-zoom 4K cameras announced in Europe

For European customers, Sony has launched the Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99, a pair of slim, compact high-zoom cameras featuring the BIONZ X image processing engine, front-end LSI and 4K video recording. Both models are nearly identical, each sporting a 180-degree tiltable LCD, OLED Tru-Finder, and 1/2.3″ Exmor R 18MP CMOS sensor.

Both the Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99 feature a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-720mm High Magnification Zoom lens, Optical SteadShot image stabilization, Zoom Assist, and auto focus speeds as fast as 0.09 seconds. Both models support 4K video recording at 3840 x 2160.

The Cyber-shot HX99 camera differs from the HX95 in a few ways, one of which is an OLED Tru-Finder with a control ring versus the HX95’s retractable viewfinder. The HX99 also features a control ring for customized camera functions, Touch Shutter, Touch Focus, and a focus point shifting function called Touch Pad.

Both the HX99 (€520 / £450) and the HX95 (€500 / £430) will be available in Europe starting October 2018.

Nikon has gone public with pricing and availability for its previously-announced AF-S Nikkor 500mm F5.6E PF ED VR lens. The use of a Phase Fresnel element allows for a smaller and lighter lens design, in theory allowing the 500mm F5.6 to be used handheld somewhat comfortably. The lens will be available September 13th for $ 3600.

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a high-performance, FX-format, super-telephoto lens that supports 500 mm focal length. The adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element has significantly reduced the size and weight of the lens, making hand-held super-telephoto photography easier and more enjoyable.

With a maximum diameter of 106 mm and length of 237 mm, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, which weighs 1,460g (roughly the same weight as the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) is significantly lighter than previous500mm lenses which can typically weigh up to more than 3,000g. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is designed with consideration to dust- and drip- resistance, which in addition to the fluorine coat applied to the front lens surface, allows greater agility when shooting.

The use of one PF lens element and three ED glass elements enables extremely sharp and detailed rendering that is compatible with high pixel-count digital cameras. In addition, the materials used in the new PF lens element have been developed effectively to reduce PF (diffraction) flare, allowing light sources to be reproduced in near-original colors. In combination with Nikon’s coating technologies, such as the Nano Crystal Coat, effective in controlling ghost and flare, extremely clear images are achieved.

AF speed has been increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is equipped with a VR mechanism that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.01-stop increase in shutter speed. The SPORT VR mode that has been adopted is especially effective when photographing fast-moving and unpredictable subjects such as wild birds, or in scenes such as sporting events. The stabilization of the image displayed in the viewfinder is also an effective feature for recording movies.

Additionally, the use of the Mount Adapter FTZ will allow the lens to be used with mirrorless cameras Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, also announced today. Users will be able to enjoy super-telephoto shooting at the 500 mm focal length with a system that is even more compact than ever before.

We are also planning to release the Dot Sight DF-M1, an accessory that is highly effective with super-telephoto photography. DJI releases highly anticipated Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom compact drones

DJI has announced the Mavic 2 Pro, featuring a 1-inch type CMOS sensor (left), and the Mavic 2 Zoom, which includes a 2x optical zoom lens (right).

Drone manufacturer DJI has announced the arrival of two new drones to its Mavic series: the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom.

The Mavic 2 Pro is the first drone with an integrated Hasselblad camera—a project that the companies collaborated on for the last two years. The Mavic 2 Pro utilizes a newly redesigned 1-inch CMOS sensor and 10-bit Dlog-M color profile, which allows the Mavic 2 Pro to capture four times the level of color as its predecessor, the Mavic Pro. The drone can shoot 20-megapixel images, has an ISO sensitivity of 100-6400, an aperture range of F2.8 to F11 and shoots 4K video with 10-bit HDR.

The Mavic 2 Zoom is the first consumer-oriented drone with zooming capabilities. It offers users a 2x optical zoom (24mm-48mm) and a 2x digital zoom (49mm-96mm) and can capture lossless video in full HD resolution. It’s built around a redesigned 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, can shoot 12-megapixel images, has an ISO range of 100-3200 and improved focusing speed thanks to its upgraded phase and contrast detection.

A new auto mode on the Mavic 2 Zoom, called Super Resolution, uses the drone’s optical zoom to shoot nine individual images of a scene and then automatically stitch them together into a 48-megapixel photo. The drone’s zooming capabilities have led to new video modes too. Dolly Zoom QuickShot allows videographers to quickly replicate cinematic techniques popularized by folks like Hitchcock, where the camera zooms in on a subject while moving backwards.

The bodies of the two new models are identical, and are slightly larger than the original Mavic Pro; like the orginal, they also fold down for easy transport. Both are equipped with omnidirectional sensors that can track the drone’s movements left, right, up, down, forward and backward, utilize a 3-axis mechanical stabilization and feature new auxiliary lights on the bottom to help with landing and flying in low-light situations (like dusk and dawn). A redesigned winglet and new motors make the two drones quieter than earlier models.

Both models can record at a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps using H.265 compression, include 8GB of internal storage, and can capture 4K video at up to 30fps as well as HD video up to 120fps. Each has a respectable flight time of 31 minutes.

The new drones also feature updated intelligent flight modes like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack 2.0, which can now avoid obstacles and continuously track subjects thanks to the 10 sensors found on each drone. OcuSync also gets an update and help keeps the controller and the drone in communication—the Mavic 2 drones can transmit 1080p video up to five miles away from the controller.

The Mavic 2 Pro will retail for $ 1449, while the Mavic 2 Zoom will retail for $ 1249. Both models are available today from DJI.

The SX740 gains Canon’s latest processor (Digic 8), which brings with it UHD 4K video capture and 7.4 fps burst shooting with continuous AF. The camera also features Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth, with the latter providing the ability to automatically transfer images to both mobile and desktop devices.

The PowerShot SX740 HS will be available in August, in silver or black, at a list price of $ 399.

Fujifilm’s XF10 is a small, wide-angle APS-C compact

Fujifilm has announced the XF10, an APS-C sensor compact camera with a fast prime lens. It retains the same 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens as the X70 but now uses a 24MP Bayer color filter rather than X-Trans.

The XF10 appears to be a simplified X70 with a higher resolution sensor. The XF10 has a mode dial in the place of the X70’s shutter speed control and it also loses the focus mode switch from the front plate and the tilting screen that made the X70 attractive to street shooters.

Like the Fujifilm X-E3, the XF10 has an AF joystick on the back, and uses directional swipes on the rear touchscreen instead of offering a four-way controller. One of the functions that can be accessed this way is ‘Square Mode’, which is a quick way to jump to shooting in the Instagram-tastic 1:1 aspect ratio.

Sadly the XF10 appears to use the previous generation processor meaning that, although it says ‘4K’ in the press release, it can only shoot at 15 fps, which doesn’t really count as video in our opinion. We’re also a little worried about what this might mean for the camera’s responsiveness. It also continues to use the older, smaller NP-95 battery.

The XF10 weighs 280g / 9.8oz with card and battery, making it around 18% lighter than the X70. It will go on sale in August for around $ 500.

High Quality FUJINON Lens Covers a Wide Range of Subjects from Landscapes to Snapshots

The XF10 features an 18.5mmF2.8 FUJINON lens (equivalent to 28mm on 35mm format) that ensures every image is sharp from center to edges. The optical design of the lens is perfectly matched to the sensor in the XF10, to ensure there is no compromise in quality due to the camera’s compact size. With the Digital Teleconverter function, the camera is capable of taking photos with equivalent focal lengths of 35mm and 50mm on a 35mm format.

Enhanced Creativity with Unique Film Simulation and Advanced Filter Modes

The XF10 offers 11 unique FUJIFILM Film Simulations and 19 Advanced Filters, providing photographers with the ability to enhance their creativity.
