Ricoh announces WG-20 entry-level rugged compact

06 Feb

wg20_red_003_WEB.png

Ricoh has announced the WG-20, an inexpensive rugged compact that’s waterproof to 10m/33ft, freezeproof to -10C/+14F, and able to survive a 1.5m/5ft drop. Sporting a 14 megapixel CCD sensor, it provides a 28-140mm 5x optical zoom lens and 720p HD movie recording. It’s a continuation of Pentax’s WG-line (minus the ‘Pentax’ logo), and presumably a WG-10 replacement, though the cameras appear to share the same sensor, lens and rugged specifications. Available in March, it will ship in red or white for $ 199.95. Learn more

Alongside the OM-D E-M10, Olympus has also announced three lenses. First up is the M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8, a relatively inexpensive fast normal prime, that looks specifically designed to complement the much-loved 45mm F1.8. Second is the 9mm F8 Fish-Eye Body Cap Lens (which Olympus technically considers an ‘accessory’); this offers a 140° angle of view in a tiny plastic body. Finally there’s a new ‘pancake’ kit zoom for the E-M10, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ, which features an electronic zoom. Learn more

Bike Tire Tent: Compact Travel Shelter Wraps Inside Wheels

29 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

tire bike travel tent

For the cycling nomad, this design uses space you never knew you had, and helps free up room in front-of-handlebar baskets or on above-back-tire racks for other uses in the process.

Designed by Chung-Jung Wu, Pei-Chun Chen & Li-Fu Chen, a specially-reinforced tire creates a void into which a biker can clip their travel tent for extended rides.

The easy-to-access clasps make it simpler and speedier to deploy the tent when you reach your temporary destination, rather than unwrapping it from a pack or unstrapping it from a fender platform.

Of even greater value to long-distance travelers: precious cargo space on your back and elsewhere on your bicycle is freed up for clothes and other essential gear.

Have your say: Best Fixed-lens Compact Camera of 2013

19 Dec

bestfixedlensmirrorless.jpg

2013 saw the release of five cameras in a (relatively) new class, which we’re calling ‘fixed lens compact cameras’. Specifically, large-sensor fixed-lens compact cameras. Fujifilm’s X100S is one of our favorite cameras of the year, addressing many of the faults of its predecessor. Sony followed up on the RX1 from last year with the RX1R, which shares the same 24MP full-frame sensor but minus an AA filter for superior resolution. Meanwhile, both Nikon and Ricoh released APS-C 28mm equivalent cameras, while Sigma’s DP3 offers a 75mm equivalent lens. Click through for a chance to cast your vote and decide which is best.

Over the last few weeks we’ve featured lists of the most popular DSLRs, DSLR Lenses and Camera Bags among our readers. Today we’re turning our attention to compact camera systems.

This last 3 months has seen a bit of a surge in purchases of and interest in this class of camera as an increasing number of our readers seem to be looking for smaller cameras that still have interchangeable lens options. One of the ways dPS is able to cover its costs and be a sustainable business is that we earn a small commission when readers make a purchase from Amazon after clicking on our links (including those above). While no personal details are passed on we do get an overall report from Amazon about what was bought and are able to create this list.
