Think Tank introduces new low-profile ‘Urban Approach’ bags for compact system cameras

Bag and accessory manufacturer Think Tank has announced that it will introduce a new range of shoulder bags and a backpack for compact system camera users in April this year. Dubbed the ‘Urban Approach’ range the bags are said to be ‘low profile’ to allow the photographer to carry equipment without standing out, and will be finished in low-contrast matte black. Click through for details

A Compact PEN: Olympus Stylus SH-2 Hands-on

The Olympus Stylus SH-2 is a compact long-zoom camera that bears a remarkable resemblance to the company’s PEN series of mirrorless cameras. While it shares the design and 5-axis image stabilization of some of the PEN models, the similarities end there, as the SH-2 is very much a point-and-shoot camera. Fujifilm releases XQ2 premium compact

Fujifilm has announced the XQ2 premium compact camera which is the same as the XQ1, save for the addition of the Classic Chrome film simulation mode. As with its predecessor, the XQ2 features a 12 megapixel 2/3″ X-Trans CMOS sensor, 25-100mm equiv. F1.8-4.9 lens, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi. The XQ2 also has a customizable control ring around the lens for quickly adjusting your favorite settings. Read more.

Panasonic releases trio of compact superzooms

Panasonic also announced a trio of compact superzoom cameras, covering all price ranges. The base model is the Lumix DMC-SZ10, which has a 16MP CCD, 24-228 mm equiv. lens, and flip-up 2.7″ LCD. Stepping up to the DMC-ZS45 (TZ57 outside of US) gives you a 16MP CMOS sensor, 24-480mm lens, 1080p video, Wi-Fi with NFC, and a larger/sharper LCD. The top model is the ZS50 (TZ70) that has a 12MP sensor, 24-720mm lens, 60p video, and a 1.2M dot EVF. More details

This year saw a number of new cameras released in the high-end compact category, and as well as updated versions of earlier cameras, we also saw brand new products, and – increasingly – a shift to larger sensors as a major differentiator. 2014 was the year that Canon moved to the 1-inch sensor format, and Panasonic even managed to fit a Micro Four Thirds sensor into its LX100. Most Popular Compact System and Mirrorless Cameras with Our Readers

Earlier in the week we revealed the DSLRs that were best selling among our readers over the last few months. While DSLRs are still the most popular type of readers among our readers this last quarter has seen a big rise in the number of you using compact system cameras.

In fact if we combined the two lists we’d now see compact system cameras in the top 20 cameras bought by our readers with the Sony Alpha a6000 and the Sony Alpha a7II both making that list.

What is remarkable about this is that the newly announced Sony Alpha a7II is not even released yet and it makes the list purely based upon pre-order levels!

Also an indication of the growth of sales in the compact system camera class of camera is that today we’re listing 19 of them while last time we created this list we only saw enough sales to justify making it a list of 9 cameras.

2014 High-end Pocketable Compact Roundup

Hasselblad introduces Stellar II luxury enthusiast compact

Hasselblad has announced the Stellar II, an enthusiast compact which the company says has been ‘conceived and crafted exclusively for aficionados, collectors, and connoisseurs’. Like other recent Hasselblads, the Stellar II is a rebadged Sony camera – which in this case is the RX100 III. Available grip finishes include olive, walnut, padouk, and carbon fiber. You can pick one up for yourself at a price of $ 2395/€1650.
