  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Everyday Life

The first thing I want you to do it is to have a look at these photos of details of everyday life.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Everyday Life

This one should be easy and hard at the same time. Easy in a sense of finding subjects because it’s the things you see and use every single day. Hard in a sense that you need to look at them in a new way. See them differently, and photograph them in a way that is interesting.

Look for light, shapes, shadows. Get creative with your post-processing. Put in a macro lens or extension tube and get in close. Try something new just for fun.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Stripes

Finding unique photography subjects can be a challenge sometimes. Contrast draws attention, and stripes carry inherent contrast. Like this images of stripes.

    Weekly Photography Challenge – Stripes

Leading lines is a great element of composition to use to create dramatic images. Taking that to the extreme and you have stripes!

This week for the photography challenge you need to find or create some stripes to photograph. That might be painted striped on a road or crosswalk (be safe please), blinds or light coming through them, shadows or a fence, etc.

Use your thinking cap and add a little creativity and see what you can come up with for stripes.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Neon

Sign Sign Everywhere a Sign – check out these images of neon signs.

    Wbeem

    By wbeem

    Weekly Photography Challenge – Neon

If you live in an urban center or city, chances are you can find some neon nearby somewhere. Look for old diners, city center squares, movie theatres (especially old marquees like this one).

    Mike Boening Photography

    By Mike Boening Photography

There are a number of ways you can approach this subject, but if you choose to shoot it after dark you will most likely need a tripod and a long exposure, you may also want to incorporate some bracketing and do some HDR or exposure blending to help combat the contrast problem (the dynamic range between night sky and neon is very high, hard to keep detail in all areas).

You can also add in some extra things like car trails (as seen above) or do a zoom during your exposure. Perhaps shoot just a portion of the sign even. Those are just a few ideas to get you started.

Tip: if you want some color in the sky and background try shooting just after sunset at dusk, during the blue hour. The sky will be a dark rich blue and not totally black yet, and the lights should start to come on and show up better. It’s about finding the right balance for your exposure.
