Weekly Photography Challenge – Out of the Blue

Here is another easy one for you.

Get out there and find some blue things to photograph this week for the photography challenge!

You can look for blue things, shoot during Blue Hour, or use some split-toning on a black and white image to make your something blue for this challenge.

In post-processing, removed most of the color tones in the image except for blues, and a little bit of green/teal. 

Oil and water and a bit of color make for a fun afternoon photography project.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Seeing Red

Okay, this should be an easy one for you. All you need to do to participate in this week’s photography challenge is come up with something red!

That could mean finding a red subject, making your own (oil and water and dye) or using a selective color technique to remove all the other tints in the image except for red.

Photography Challenge – Stunning Smartphone Pics

You don’t need the latest greatest top of the line full frame DSLR to take good photos. But you do need to have a camera with you and to make use of good lighting and composition principles.

This week it’s time to practice your Smartphone photography and share your images with us for the weekly challenge. But let’s take it up a notch, shall we?

Is it noisy? Yes but not outrageously so (shot with a Canon 5D Mark III). But without the use of the 50mm lens and high ISO, this shot isn’t even possible.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Long Exposures

This week, for your dPS photography challenge, you will need to get out your tripod and remote trigger because you’ll be doing some long exposure photography.

Shooting star trails is the ultimate long exposure photography.

There are many ways to incorporate a long exposure into your images. Here are a few ideas:

Car light trails – this image is a combination of several frames shot to capture more lights.

Light painting is another idea for long exposures.

Try an intention motion blur, in this case, the lens was zoomed during a long exposure.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Portraits

I did portraits and weddings as commissioned work for years. To this day, people photography is still my favorite thing to do. So, whether you’re into travel, street, or full-on portrait photography you can practice your people skills with this week’s photography challenge.

This portrait was lit using a combination of flash and natural light at 1/30th of a second.

This portrait was made in a classroom when I was teaching a portrait class. There is a large window off to camera right which is lighting the model’s face, another reflector being held behind her and up high to light her hair and add highlights. Finally, there is a black reflector being held by one of my students to create the background. You don’t need a lot of gear!

Weekly Photography Challenge – Simplify

It’s time once again for the weekly photography challenge. This week your job is to do LESS! Yup, that’s right we want you to put less in your photos. Simplify your images down to one easily identifiable subject with a minimalist composition and simplicity.

Simplify – you don’t need to see the whole thing to get the message here.

How else can you simplify? Perhaps get rid of all color and shoot monochrome or convert to black and white later? Here are some ideas for simplifying or getting minimalist.

It’s time to dig out your widest lens. If you don’t have a super wide-angle maybe you can rent or borrow one from a friend or go out shooting with a group and share one. Or buy one for your mobile phone even! Think outside the box about how you can shoot super-wide.
