World’s fastest SD cards hit 299MB/s write-speed according to Sony

Sony has announced what it is describing as the world’s fastest SD memory cards with the launch of the new SF-G series. The three cards under the new label are capable of reading out at a rate of 300MB/s, but more significantly for camera performance they can accept data at a write speed of up to 299MB/s. Such speeds equip them to receive high resolution video as well as to cope with the new wave of extreme frame rates in DSLR and mirrorless cameras – such as that produced by the Olympus OM-D E-M1 ll.

Sony says that it isn’t just the physical properties of the cards that assist getting long bursts of high resolution images recorded, as the company has also developed a new algorithm that it says ‘prevents loss of speed in data writing even after repeating burst shooting, and contributes to the camera’s speed of burst shooting’.

Sony will launch three different capacities in the SF-G range; 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, and says the very high read rates possible will reduce the time it takes users to copy large amounts of data from the cards – so long as a suitable card reader is used. Conveniently then, Sony has also announced a new card reader that uses USB 3.1. The MRW-S1 is claimed to be the fastest card reader in the world too, due to its adoption of SuperSpeed USB and a direct, cable-free connection between the reader and the PC’s USB port.
No pricing has been released with the news, but the SF-G cards are due to go on sale in March while the card reader is expected for April.

It’s interesting to note, however, that the card is still rated as U3 speed class, meaning that it’s only guaranteed to be able to sustain a writing speed of 30MB/s, which is significant if you’re attempting to shoot video (30MB/s is 240 Mbps). It’s unclear whether this is because the card can’t dependably write fast enough to earn a V60 rating or if Sony simply hasn’t fully adopted the SD 5.0 standard yet.

CFexpress cards with 8GB/s data rate on the way according to the CompactFlash Association

The CompactFlash Association has announced that it is working on a new series of memory cards that will offer theoretical data rates of up to 8GB per second. Still very much in development, the CFexpress family of media storage will be available in a range of form factors to suit multiple kinds of device, but will all have the same physical interface and memory protocol. The Association says the cards will be good for professional photographers and videographers as well as for personal computing, servers and for industrial applications.

The cards will have varying numbers of lanes that will govern their ultimate speed of communication. Those lanes will be based on the PCIE generation 3 interface which can deliver a theoretical 1GB/s per lane and cards will be supplied eventually that have up to eight lanes.

The Association suggests that the need for such data rates is being driven by the increasing numbers of 4K cameras and that slow motion 4K footage recorded in raw format needs better communication speeds than currently exist.

CFexpress Introduces a New Family of High-Performance Removable Media Based on PCIE® and NVM Express®

Cupertino, California – The CompactFlash Association (CFA) announces the CFexpress Family of high-performance removable storage based on PCIE® and NVM Express®

CFA has developed high-performance removable cards standards for the last 21 years with the popular CompactFlash®, CFast®, and XQD® formats. The CompactFlash Association was formed in 1995 as the initial digital film format and continues to serve professional imaging and industrial markets where high performance and high-quality recording media is essential for high-speed capture and high-speed transfer into the workflow.

CFexpress is the next evolution in an open standard format for a broader set of applications, such as professional imaging, personal computing, servers, IoT and industrial. CFexpress differs from prior CFA standards in that CFexpress is a specification spanning multiple form factors and performance levels to match various market requirements while maintaining the same electrical/physical interface and memory/storage protocol. The new CFexpress specification is under development within the CFA CFexpress Working Group.

CFA’s goals for the CFexpress family are:
1) Unify the ecosystem around a removable storage specification that has longevity in the market
2) Provide a platform that scales with performance increases in the PCIE® interface
3) Leverages the technologies and skillsets of the larger volume compute markets
4) Seamless compatibility with the capture ecosystem and workflow tools.

CFexpress leverages the PCIE® physical interface for higher performance based on the high-volume compute industry. PCIE® CFA’s objective is to specify multiple removable storage devices that spans from two lanes architecture all the way up to eight lanes. With the current PCIE® Gen 3 delivering maximum theoretical interface speeds of 1.0GB/sec per lane, CFexpress would enable theoretical sequential speed of up to 8GB/s.

CFexpress also utilizes the low latency NVM Express® memory/storage protocol across all of the form factors. This enables compatibility with a broader set of ecosystem components, such as controllers, OS, capture devices and workflow modules. In imaging, compute and industrial applications, the use of PCIE® /NVM Express® enables access to wide range of open standard platforms consisting of mature and proven drivers. In addition, the new CFexpress format also enable easy compatibility with the Thunderbolt® interface which is also based on PCIE®. Actual CFexpress products will vary in performance based on market requirements and protocol overheads.

Professional video data rate requirements are growing at an exponential rate exceeding the capabilities of existing open standard formats. 4K RAW video at 30fps requires 400-500MB/sec of sustained performance not including any overhead to guarantee performance over the entire recording media. 4K RAW video at 120fps requires 1,600-2,000MB/sec. 4K RAW video at 240fps requires 3,200-4,000MB/sec. Even in High-Quality I-Frame compression formats, the data rates quickly exceed 1.0GB/Sec at high frame rates.

Samsung launches first removable UFS memory cards

Samsung has announced that it intends to produce the first removable versions of a new format of memory cards designed, it says, to replace the microSD card in portable electronic devices such as cameras, drones and phones.

The Universal Flash Storage cards are as small as microSD cards but boast enhanced read/write speeds, with the company claiming that 5GB can be read in just 10 seconds at a rate of 530MB/s. The write speeds a less impressive however, with a quoted maximum of 170MB/s, but Samsung says that is still almost twice the speed of a top end microSD card. The company says its cards will write at 170MB/s, which compares well to the 100MB/s rate quoted by SanDisk for its Extreme Pro UHS-II cards. The same SanDisk card reads at 275MB/s.

Although the format was announced in a white paper (pdf) in 2013, and Samsung announced its plans in February, this is the first time the cards appeared to become a reality with compliance with the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) standards.

The company expects to introduce capacities of 32, 64,128 and 256GB, but hasn’t said when or whether there will be devices to take them.

Samsung Introduces World’s First Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Removable Memory Card Line-up, Offering up to 256-Gigabyte (GB) Capacity

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today unveiled the industry’s first removable memory cards based on the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension Standard*, for use in high-resolution mobile shooting devices such as DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cams and drones. Coming in a wide range of storage capacities including 256, 128, 64 and 32 gigabyte (GB), Samsung’s UFS cards are expected to bring a significant performance boost to the external memory storage market, allowing much more satisfying multimedia experiences.

“Our new 256GB UFS card will provide an ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution,” said Jung-bae Lee, senior vice president, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering, Samsung Electronics “By launching our new high-capacity, high-performance UFS card line-up, we are changing the growth paradigm of the memory card market to prioritize performance and user convenience above all.”

Samsung’s new 256GB UFS removable memory card ? simply referred to as the UFS card will provide greatly improved user experiences, especially in high-resolution 3D gaming and high-resolution movie playback. It provides more than five times faster sequential read performance compared to that of a typical microSD card, reading sequentially at 530 megabytes per second (MB/s) which is similar to the sequential read speed of the most widely used SATA SSDs. With this UFS card, consumers have the ability to read a 5GB, Full-HD movie in approximately 10 seconds, compared to a typical UHS-1 microSD card, which would take over 50 seconds with 95MB/s of sequential reading speed. Also, at a random read rate of 40,000 IOPS, the 256GB card delivers more than 20 times higher random read performance compared to a typical microSD, which offers approximately 1,800 IOPS.

When it comes to writing, the new 256GB UFS card processes 35,000 random IOPS, which is 350 times higher than the 100 IOPs of a typical microSD card, and attains a 170MB/s sequential write speed, almost doubling the top-end microSD card speed. With these substantial performance improvements, the new 256GB UFS card significantly reduces multimedia data downloading time, photo thumbnail loading time and buffer clearing time in burst shooting mode, which, collectively, can be particularly beneficial to DSLR camera users. To shoot 24 large/extra fine JPEG photographs (1,120 megabyte (MB)-equivalent) continuously with a high-end DSLR camera, the 256GB UFS card takes less than seven seconds, compared to a UHS-1 microSD card which typically takes about 32 seconds, at 35MB/s.

To achieve the highest performance and most power-efficient data transport, the UFS card supports multiple commands with command queuing features and enables simultaneous reading and writing through the use of separately dedicated paths, doubling throughput.

As the leading memory storage provider, Samsung has been aggressive in preparing UFS solutions for the marketplace, while contributing to JEDEC standardization of the Universal Flash Storage 2.0 specification in September 2013 and the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension standard in March 2016. Following its introduction of the industry-first 128GB embedded UFS chip in January 2015, the company successfully launched a 256GB embedded UFS memory for high-end mobile devices in February of this year. As of earlier this month, Samsung also completed the Universal Flash Storage Association** (UFSA)’s certification program that evaluates electrical and functional specifications for compatibility of a UFS card, and Samsung’s new UFS card products were approved as UFSA-certified UFS cards with the right to use the official UFS logo for the first time in the industry.

SanDisk says its two new microSD cards are the world’s fastest

SanDisk has announced a pair of new 256GB microSD cards: the SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card and the Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Premium Edition card. These are the fastest microSD cards in the world, according to SanDisk, with the Premium Edition also ‘optimized for mainstream consumers.’ The cards are intended for action cameras, drones, smartphones and other gadgets with demanding storage needs.

The 256GB Extreme card is the fastest of the two, offering transfer speeds up to 100MB/s (compared the Ultra’s 95MB/s max transfer speed) and write speeds up to 90MB/s. SanDisk presents the Extreme model as being ideal for UHD video recording, saying the card can hold up to 14 hours of 4K video. The Ultra version, meanwhile, is better suited to lower resolutions, and can store more than 24 hours of Full HD video.

In addition, both microSDXC cards can withstand extreme temperatures and are waterproof, shock-proof, and x-ray-proof. Both are compatible with SanDisk’s Memory Zone Android app. The company will launch the Ultra Premium Edition card globally in August for $ 149.99, and the Extreme card globally in the fourth quarter of this year for $ 199.99.

Eye-Fi to cease support for Pro X2 and earlier generation cards

Eye-Fi will soon end support for its X2 and older wireless memory cards, services and apps, according to a notice sent to customers today. Citing security concerns, the company will complete the ‘end of life’ stage on September 16, 2015 by ending server support. The cards will still function at that point, and certain wireless transfer modes may still work, but their associated apps and services won’t offer full functionality. Eye-Fi is offering to move customer data to its newer Cloud service, and will sell affected customers new cards at a discount. Mobi, Mobi Pro and EyeFi Cloud are all unaffected.

Eye-Fi mentions that some functions that don’t require contact with its servers may still work after September 16, but their function is by no means guaranteed. The company states that Direct Mode for transfer directly to a computer or mobile device may keep working, as well as Selective Transfer, in which the user chooses images for transfer by designating them as ‘locked’ or ‘protected’ on the camera. Eye-Fi warns that if customers want to try and keep using these modes, they should make sure they’re configured prior to September 16.

Eye-Fi Premium customers will be able to migrate to an Eye-Fi Cloud account, and owners of legacy cards can buy a limited number of Mobi cards at a discount to replace them. Below is a list of affected products which Eye-Fi will no longer support.

This message is for customers that purchased an Eye-Fi Pro X2 or earlier generation products prior to March 2015. Effective today, June 30th 2016, we will no longer be offering support for our legacy product lines, a complete list of which appears below. This notice formally begins the final stage of the “end-of-life” (EOL) process started in mid-2015 for the affected products. It’s very important that customers cease using these products no later than September 16, 2016 as some key services these products rely on will be shut down at that time. All customers who have a Mobi or Mobi Pro products purchased since 2013 are not affected by this announcement.

We began EOL on these product lines in 2015 largely driven by technological obsolescence of some of the key technologies included in these products. The primary technologies relate to Internet security and authentication mechanisms that were state-of-the-art in 2007 when we built them into our products but have since proven to be vulnerable. Since mid-2015 we have been offering migration services free of charge for Customers who have paid Eyefi Premium accounts. We will continue to offer this service migrating your Eyefi View data to Eyefi Cloud. You can request a migration here. For those customers that wish to use an Eyefi Mobi Pro card in place of their earlier generation products, we have also made a limited quantity available at a deep discount, see details here if you wish to take advantage of this offer.

Please note that we will maintain our customer service Web site and content for all customers. Canon warns against use of SanDisk CFast cards with EOS-1D X Mark II

Canon has issued a warning to EOS-1D X II owners, noting a problem with file corruption that can occur when certain SanDisk CFast cards are used. The issue occurs with the last few images recorded just before the camera is powered off, so Canon’s suggested workaround is to capture a number of extra shots when turning the camera off. 

These are the problematic cards named in Canon’s advisory: 

The “xxx” at the end of the product number varies depending on the sales region.

  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxx)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxA)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxA)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxB)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxB)

Both Raw and JPEG files are affected, but the number of corrupted images varies according to the compression mode used. When shooting Raw, Canon recommends recording just one extra shot, but shooting small sized JPEGs will require 8 extra shots to protect other images on the card.

The statement makes very clear that the problem is caused by SanDisk’s cards, not by the camera. Canon says it may issue a firmware update in early July to address the problem.

Tamrac Goblin gear pouches protect lenses, cameras and memory cards

Tamrac has a new line of Goblin gear pouches designed for individual lenses and cameras, as well as a couple larger accessory pouches for storing multiple items together. The product line includes half a dozen lens pouches, all with drawstring enclosures, three body pouches, two accessory pouches and one memory card wallet. 

The Goblin pouches feature ripstop nylon exteriors and quilted interiors. The lens pouches span bag models 0.3 to 2.4, with the smallest model (0.3) having an interior space of 6 x 8cm/2.25 x 3 in, and the largest (2.4) having an interior space measuring 12 x 21cm/4.75 x 8 in. The camera body pouches are similar, with the smallest model (0.4) offering 3 x 5.5 x 2 in/8 x 14 x 5 cm of interior space, and the largest model (1.4) offering 4.25 x 5 x 3.5 in/11 x 13 x 9 cm of interior space.

Unlike the lens and body pouches, the two accessory pouches, models 1.0 and 1.7, feature YKK zippers and mesh windows to offer a view of what’s in the bag while it’s closed. The Goblin line is rounded out with a memory card wallet with a micro mesh window and three difference size options, one that fits 6 SD cards, another that fits 4 Compact Flash cards, and a third option that fits all ten cards at once.

The Goblin line of pouches is available now through Tamrac’s website. Prices start at $ 12.95.

Sony introduces new XQD and SD cards

Sony has announced new XQD and SDXC UHS-II memory cards at CES. This comes on the heels of Nikon’s announcement of the D5 and D500, both of which can utilize the relatively recent XQD format. The XQD-M series offers read speeds up to 440MB/sec and write speeds up to 150MB/s, and is available in 32, 64 and 128GB capacities. The new SF-M series of SD cards support up to 260MB/sec read and 100MB/sec write speeds. Sony also offers a new XQD/SD combination card reader. No pricing or availability is given yet.
