Sigma releases firmware updates for Canon EF and Nikon F lenses, MC-11 mount converter

Sigma has released multiple firmware updates for Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount interchangeable lenses. The new lens firmware updates bring a number of changes to a total of seven lenses, adding support for Canon’s Lens Aberration Correction function and multiple bug fixes, which were addressed in a recent compatibility notice.

The firmware update for Canon EF-mount brings the new Lens Aberration Correction function support for the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 500mm F4 DG OS HSM | Sports
  • SIGMA 18-300 mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary

In addition, the update improves the AF speed for the 500mm lens when it is used with select camera models, and also adds compatibility with the EOS R’s ‘Scene Intelligent Auto Mode’ and automatic ‘1.6x (Crop)’ to the 18-300mm lens.

Sigma has also released a firmware update for Nikon F-Mount lenses that exclusively brings bug fixes. The software corrects problems that could impact video recording, AF, and overexposure involving the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art

Joining the lens updates is a firmware release for Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 SA-E and EF-E. The update adds compatibility with the newest interchangeable lenses firmware updates.

The products can be updated using the Sigma Optimization Pro software, which is available to download on Windows and macOS for free. The full firmware update change-logs are below.

We would like to announce that a new firmware update for SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for CANON EF mount listed below is now available.

This firmware allows compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function to enable correction matching the optical characteristics of each lens. It also corrects the phenomenon that abnormal images appear or operation errors occur when the function is enabled. In addition, it improves the functionality. Furthermore, phenomena particular to some lenses when they are used in combination with the Canon “EOS R” and their “Mount Adapter EF-EOS R” or “Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R” that we announced on January 16th, 2019 are also improved on by this firmware.

For customers who own the SIGMA USB DOCK and applicable products listed below, please update the firmware via SIGMA Optimization Pro.*

Benefits of the update:

  • It has ensured compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function, which enables correction matching the optical characteristics of the attached lens.*
  • It has corrected the phenomenon that abnormal images appear or operation errors occur when Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function is enabled.
  • It has become compatible with EOS R’s “1.6x (Crop)” to be set automatically as well as with “Scene Intelligent Auto Mode”.

Benefit of the update:

When the lens is used in combination with the Nikon “Z 7” and their “Mount Adapter FTZ”, it has corrected the phenomenon whereby the response to the AF operation is intermittent when starting to shoot with the subject completely out of focus.

SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art & SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art for NIKON F mount

Benefit of the update:

When the lens is used in combination with the Nikon “Z 7” and their “Mount Adapter FTZ”, it has corrected the phenomenon whereby it may occasionally show overexposure when narrowing down the aperture from F5.6 while shooting.


[SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 UPDATE]

We are pleased to announce that a firmware update for the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 SA-E and EF-E is now available. This firmware makes the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 compatible with the latest firmware of SIGMA interchangeable lenses. For customers who own the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11, please update the firmware via SIGMA Optimization Pro* by connecting it to a computer using the supplied USB Cable.

Meike releases 50mm F1.7 full-frame budget lens for Canon EOS-R, Nikon Z cameras

Hong Kong-based company Meike has launched its 50mm F1.7 lens for the Canon EOS-R and Nikon Z6 / Z7 full-frame cameras. This manual focus full-frame lens features 6 elements in 5 groups, 0.5m / 1.6ft minimum focusing distance, a nanotechnology multi-layer coating, and 310 gram / 11oz weight.

Sigma updates lens compatibility notice for Canon EOS R after further testing

Sigma has made a number of amendments to its lens compatibility notice for Sigma lenses when used on Canon’s EOS R mirrorless camera.

After further testing, Sigma has concluded both autofocus and optical image stabilization (for applicable lenses) work ‘without any issues’ on the following lenses when used with Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras via the EF-EOS R mount adapter or Control Ring EF-EOS R mount adapter:

*Camera’s “Scene Intelligent Auto mode” cannot be used.

Sigma notes when Digital Lens Optimizer, located within the EOS R settings menu, is switched to ‘OFF’ but peripheral illumination correction, chromatic aberration correction and distortion correction are turned on, those corrections will be made for each lens, specific to their optical characteristics. ‘This is applicable to DG and DC lenses from Contemporary, Art and Sports line listed below which were released after March, 2018, or those of which firmware has been updated to Ver.2.0 or later,’ says Sigma in the press release.

Sigma also clarifies that any DC lenses where the image circle is made to match APS-C sensors is used, the EOS R won’t automatically switch to its built-in 1.6x crop shooting mode, meaning it will have to be set manually. A future firmware update, expected to be ‘announced at a later date,’ will make this switch automatic and add support for the EOS R’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode.

Testing also confirmed three lenses had the potential to show ‘some phenomena’ that required special handling. The Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM, 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM and 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM all experienced a problem wherein on particular occasions the camera battery needed to be taken out and put back in place if the lens was removed while the optical stabilization is running.

Likewise, the 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM and 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM experienced an issue where autofocus would stop working from infinity to closer focus distance while shooting video.

Upcoming firmware updates to address these issues for these three lenses are expected ‘at a later date.’

Sigma 28mm F1.4 Art lens now available for pre-order on Canon, Nikon, Sigma and Sony mounts

Sigma has officially opened up pre-orders for the 28mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens it first showed off at Photokina in September 2018.

The lens, which Sigma said would be available in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sigma SA and Sony E mounts, is listed as pre-order for $ 1,399 USD at both Adorama and B&H.

As a refresher, the 28mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens has a 17-element optical design including two F Low Dispersion (FLD), three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and three aspherical elements. It has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm / 11.02in, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, maximum magnification of 0.19x and a 77mm filter thread — the same as Sigma’s 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens.


Update (January 11th, 2019): It appears the Sony E-mount version of the Sigma 28mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens is now available for pre-order as well at both Adorama and B&H. The article has been updated accordingly to reflect this change.

Canon ranked in top five for US patent awards for 33 consecutive years

The Canon Sure Shot Delsol used solar panels on its front cover to power some of the camera’s functions. Solar power drove the AF system, the electro-magnetic shutter unit, film advance and even the flash. A secondary lithium battery was used as a back-up. C1995

Canon has proudly announced it ranked third in the world for the number of patents awarded to it by the US Patents Office during 2018. The company is quite used to being at the top of the table though, and has managed to remain in the top five every year for the last 33 – since 1985. The company also says that it has ranked as the number one Japanese company in the charts for the last 14 years.

Canon explains in a statement that the US is an important market not only for its products but also for its technologies. The company says its innovations ‘serve society’ as they lead to better products, more convenience and improved manufacturing techniques.

It is important to remember the photography is just a part of Canon’s business, but it would be interesting to know what proportion of its 3000+ awarded patents last year came from its photographic operations.

Canon exec says an 8K mirrorless camera is on the ‘EOS R-series roadmap’

In an exclusive interview with Dave Etchells of Imaging Resource Canon’s top product-planning executive, Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, shared a number of interesting details regarding the future of the Canon R series.

Considering his position in the company, Mizoguchi-san is the foremost expert in terms of understanding where Canon is currently at and where it anticipates on going with the EOS R lineup in the future.

The interview is full of smaller tid-bits regarding the Canon EOS R series, but the stand-out detail from the lengthy interview is the mention of an upcoming EOS R camera that’s capable of recording 8K video.

When inquired by Etchells as to how video plays a roll in the EOS R series — both in terms of lenses and cameras — and how important it will be within the product lineup, Mizoguchi-san had the following to say:

Video will play a huge role in the EOS R System for sure. For example, an 8K video capable camera is already in our EOS R-series roadmap. And we are not just looking at video from a camera perspective, we are also working on how to make RF lenses better for video capture as well. [Emphasis provided by Imaging Resource]

The answer continues on with Mizoguchi-san saying the RF 24-105mm F4L was designed, in part, with Nano USM technology due to its ‘silent and smooth autofocus while shooting video.’

Mizoguchi-san wraps up the answer saying ‘Paired with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a wide range of Nano USM equipped RF lenses will promise video creators great image quality as well as impressive autofocus together in the R-series.’

As Imaging Resource pointed out in an editorial note underneath this specific question and response, the phrase ‘on the roadmap’ could mean later this year or within the next decade. However, the fact Mizoguchi-san even mentioned it shows it’s very likely a sooner-rather-than-later sort of deal considering how conservative and quiet Canon tends to be when talking about future technologies.

There is plenty to dig into within the full interview, but a few other notable mentions include Mizoguchi-san saying 4K without crop factor, faster frame rates, and in-body image stabilization (IBIS) are all features Canon ‘[is] aware of and are working on.’ Mizoguchi-san also confirms that Canon is very much focused on ‘satisfying’ both the DSLR and mirrorless market, at least for the time being.

Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L sample gallery

Canon launched the mirrorless full-frame RF-mount with a handful of impressive lenses including the RF 50mm F1.2L as well as the the versatile, fast 28-70mm F2L – a lens we’ve been shooting with a lot. Described by one DPR-staffer as ‘the size and weight of a 25 oz can of [popular-Australian-in-name-only] beer,’ this lens isn’t necessarily compact, but it does seem like an indicator for what’s to come for the RF-mount. Simply put, it seems more suited for a larger, more professional body than the EOS R. Despite some awkwardness using it on the aforementioned, we’re impressed with the results.

Canon reveals VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD, W10, and W11 camcorders at CES 2019

Canon has launched three new VIXIA consumer camcorders at CES 2019, the most notable being the VIXIA HF G50 with 4K/30p recording and 20x optical zoom. This is the first G-Series camcorder to offer UHD recording, making it ideal for advanced amateurs and projects requiring a higher level of quality, according to Canon.

The VIXIA HF G50 features a Canon 29.3 – 601mm 20x optical zoom lens, 8-blade aperture for still image bokeh, 4K 1/2.3-inch sensor, DIGIC DV 6 image processor, Dual-Pixel CMOS AF five-axis OIS, dual-card SD slots, a 3-inch LCD touchscreen, and a tilting EVF.

In addition to Full HD and UHD, the camcorder supports slow and fast recording with a range of 0.4x to 1200x. The model retains the same general design as the previous HF G40 camcorder model. Canon will offer the VIXIA HF G50 4K camcorder in April for $ 1,099.99 USD.

Joining the HF G50 are the new VIXIA HF W11 and HF W10 rugged camcorders targeted at adventurers and general consumers. Both models feature shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof (to 5m / 16.4ft) construction; they can be used in temperatures down to -10C / 14F. Likewise, both the HF W10 and HF W11 offer 40x optical zoom, 60x digital zoom, Full HD 1920 x 1080 AVCHD recording, 5-hour battery life, and a 3-inch touchscreen.

The two models differ in internal storage capacity: the W11 has 32GB, whereas the W10 only has 8GB. Users can expand the capacities via a removable SD card. As well, the W11 model features an automatic LED light. Both models will be released in April for $ 399.99 USD (HF W10) and $ 449.99 USD (HF W11).

Canon offers new developer kits for EOS bodies and PowerShot SX70 HS

Canon users who want to develop applications for their camera will be able to do so with new expanded SDK and API kits just announced by the company. The release updates the existing EOS Digital SDK (Software Development Kit) and introduces a new Camera Control API (Application Programming Interface) that is compatible with the new PowerShot SX70 HS bridge camera.

The kits allow users to develop their own methods for triggering and controlling some settings of compatible cameras, and in the case of the SX70 HS for controlling the powered zoom lens. As the new Camera Control API ‘features an agnostic operating system’ it can be operated from almost any platform, so will be compatible with a wide range of control devices from smartphones to desk top computers. The current ED SDK is only compatible with Windows and Mac environments.

The new version of the ED SDK, that adds the SX70 HS to the list of compatible cameras, is available now on the Canon Developers Website, while the Camera Control API will be released in March.

Canon Europe, a world leader in digital imaging solutions, announces the release of its new camera API package, offering a range of resources to developers. The combined EOS Digital software development kit (SDK) and all-new Camera Control API (CCAPI) create unique opportunities for developers and software engineers to take advantage of select Canon cameras and lenses, launching with the PowerShot SX70 HS.

Many developers have already benefited from Canon SDKs, enabling them to integrate Canon cameras and lenses in their solutions and control them remotely, wired via USB. Such applications include photo booths, robotic / automated units, event photography and recording, mass portrait / passport and photogrammetry systems.

The EDSDK benefits will allow users to control Canon cameras remotely from a Mac or PC and use the same code across all compatible Canon cameras. To take advantage of multi-platform support on select models[1] for fast development, the new CCAPI features an agnostic operating system, allowing wireless usage in any environment, such as Windows, Mac, Android, iOS or Linux.

Key EDSDK/CCAPI functions include:

  • Detecting, connecting/disconnecting the camera
  • Checking and changing camera settings, including time
  • Remote shooting
  • Downloading/erasing images, formatting cards

Camera API Package Availability
The camera API package is a release driven by business users’ feedback and is part of Canon’s commitment to deliver convenient solutions to developers and integrators. The EOS Digital SDK is available for immediate download at www.didp.canon-europa.com.

The Camera Control API will be available from March 2019 via the Canon developer’s website.
