Darktable 2.6.0 update brings new retouch, color balance modules and much more

Darktable, an open source Lightroom alternative, has released a major update with a number of new modules, features and updates.

Darktable version 2.6.0 is the result of more than 6 months of work, consisting of more than 1600 commits, 260 pull requests and 250 issues that have been resolved. The resulting updates include a new retouch module, a filmic module, a redesign of the color balance module and more.

The updated retouch module is essentially an updated version of the spot removal tool that includes a whole new collection of tools to get unwanted artifacts out of images. Cloning has been drastically improved and a built-in split frequency module makes it easy to remove blemishes without losing texture.

The new filmic module in darktable ‘was designed to reproduce the good properties of analog film, while giving you the easy controls of digital photography,’ according to the darktable 2.6.0 announcement post. The filmic module is effectively a spin-off of the curves tool with more adjustments to precisely dial in the exposure. Blacks, whites, contrast, local contrast and more can all be adjusted within the new filmic module.

Also added in darktable version 2.6.0 is a new duplicate manager. This new tool makes it easy to create multiple versions of Raw files and keep them in a stack for simple organization. Other features include new zoom options, mask previews and an updated color picker tool.

Palette update brings its physical editing interface to Capture One on MacOS

Palette, a modular collection of buttons, dials and sliders designed to give photo editing a more tactile experience, has received an update making it compatible with Capture One 11 and 12 on MacOS computers.

The new support, which comes in the form of a software update to the proprietary PaletteApp, gives ‘access to hundreds of Capture One function items.’ Like their Adobe counterparts, Capture One users can now use the modular sliders, dials and buttons to adjust nearly every detail of an image with a more tactile approach.

On its FAQ page, Palette Gear addresses the lack of Windows support saying, ‘Simply put, the macOS release of Capture One offers developer tools that the Windows release does not. Our aim is full Capture One support on both platforms; we don’t play favourites. After careful consideration, we made the decision to offer Capture One support for macOS users while continuing to advocate for Windows support.’

Palette Gear also points out that while Palette does has ‘limited support’ on Capture One 9.3 and 10, it recommends using Capture One 11 or 12 for the best possible experience. Below is a list of Capture One functions Palette includes ‘comprehensive support’ for as well as the hundreds of other functions:

• Tonal adjustments: exposure, white balance, levels, high dynamic range, and more
• Detail adjustments: clarity, sharpening & noise reduction, grain, and more
• Tagging and rating: Assign a specific tag or rating with a single button press; Increment ratings and cycle through color tags
• Universal control: Use a single Palette dial to adjust any C1 slider, simply by hovering over it
• Slider module support: Palette sliders can now be assigned to C1 functions; Set custom range for each slider
• Multi-function dial support: Press and turn for coarse control, press to reset

In addition to a software update to bring Capture One compatibility to older Palette kits, Palette Gear has also created a new Capture One Kit that includes one core with a color screen, four buttons, four dials, and two sliders. Like other kits, it’s entirely plug-and-play via Micro USB. It’s currently priced at $ 349.99 and will eventually get bumped hip to $ 409.96, according to Palette Gear’s product page.

Adobe Camera Raw update brings support for latest mobile devices, Nikon Z6 and more

Adobe has released the December update for its Camera Raw plug-in that allows you to edit and import Raw image files in Adobe applications, such as Photoshop, Lightroom Classic CC, Lightroom CC, Photoshop Elements, After Effects, and Bridge.

The list of newly supported cameras is heavily populated with smartphones and mobile devices. Apple latest iPhones XS, XS Max and XR are on the list as well as the company’s 2018 iPad Pro models. In addition you’ll now also be able to use Camera Raw with Raw files from Google’s Pixel 3 models, the Huawei P9 Lite, LG G7 ThinQ and the Samsung models Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S6/S6 Edge.

Camera models include Nikon’s Z6 mirrorless camera and D3500 DSLR as well the Leica M10-D and P, in addition to a bunch of compact cameras. For a full list of supported cameras head to the Adobe Support Website.

If you have an older version of an Adobe application that is not compatible with the latest version of Camera Raw you can still get Raw support for your camera through the free Adobe DNG converter.

DxO PhotoLab 2.1 update brings file indexing feature to macOS, better search for Windows

DxO launched its PhotoLab 2 in late October, and now it is back with an update to version 2.1. The updated photo editing software brings the file indexing feature to macOS that was previously only available to Windows users. As well, the Windows version of PhotoLab 2.1 now includes a more detailed search history, including one-click access to past image searches when in a new session.

DxO PhotoLab 2.1 features an optimized database architecture that improves the editor’s image management system, the end result being “significantly faster searches,” according to the company.

In addition to the new features and improvements, PhotoLab 2.1 adds support for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone, Fujifilm X-A5, and Nikon Z7, as well as the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm F4 S and the NIKKOR F FX lens. DxO plans to add support for the NIKKOR Z 35mm F1.8 S and NIKKOR Z 50mm F1.8 S early next year.

The company is working on adding support for the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom drone, Nikon Z6, Canon EOS R, Canon EOS M50, Fujifilm GFX 50s, and Fujifilm GFX 50r cameras, as well.

DxO PhotoLab 2 Essential and Elite editions are currently discounted to $ 99.99 (£79.99) and $ 149.99 (£119.99), respectively, until December 25. Existing PhotoLab 2 software owners can download the version 2.1 update for free.

Insta360 One X update brings HDR video and Google Street View integration

Insta360 has released a software update for its One X 5.7K 360-degree camera. With version software version 1.1.0 the camera is now capable of capturing HDR video — previously HDR recording was only available for still images. The One X HDR mode makes sure highlight and shadow clipping in your 360-degree videos are kept to a minimum and should make for more natural looking footage, without minimal need for post processing.

The second new feature in the update is Google Maps Street View Integration. One X owners can now use their camera to capture 360-degree content for Google Maps Street View and directly upload to Street View via the One X mobile app. The latter automatically converts video files into a series of evenly spaced 360 photo spheres for viewing on the Google platform.

In addition the company has announced that the One X is now available in a bundle that is exclusive to Apple. The bundle includes a number of accessories, including Insta360’s Bullet Time handle that also serves as a tripod, a selfie stick that is rendered invisible by the camera software, two batteries, and a protective pouch.

Google Photos for iOS update brings depth and focus editing

Google Photos is the default photos app on Android devices but also a viable option for the users of iOS devices. Today Google has announced an update to its Google Photos app for iOS that brings adjustable depth and focus for portrait mode shots to the Apple ecosystem.

Previously this feature had only been available in the Android version of the app. With this latest update you can now open Portrait Mode images in Google Photos, tap the editing icon and then modify depth-of-field and focus using virtual sliders.

iPhone XS, XS Max and iPad Pro users can do the same thing in Apple’s own Photos app but the owners of older portrait-mode-capable iPhones until now have not been able to adjust focus and depth after capture.

In addition, the latest update brings a Color Pop feature that converts the background of a Portrait Mode image into black and white but keeps the subject in color. You can download the updated Google Photos app from the App Store now.

Tamron firmware updates brings Nikon Z6/Z7 compatibility to select lenses

Lens maker Tamron has released new firmware that makes three of its lenses compatible with Nikon’s new mirrorless full-frame models Z6 and Z7 and the FTZ adapter that allows for the use of Nikon F-mount lenses on the new mirrorless Z-mount. The firmware is available for the following lenses:

  • SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025) for Nikon
  • SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022) for Nikon
  • 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) for Nikon

The new firmware can be installed using Tamron’s optional TAP-in Console. Alternatively lenses can be sent in to Tamron for the technical service to apply the update. In the US you can call Tamron USA’s service department at 1-800-827-8880 for more information. In other regions you should contact your local distributor.

An an up-do-date list of available firmware versions can be found on the Tamron support website. If your Tamron lens has not been updated for Nikon Z compatibility yet, keep an eye on this page as new updates will be posted as they become available.

Pixelmator Pro 1.2 brings smart photo enhancements, batch processing and more

Pixelmator today released Pixelmator Pro 1.2 Quicksilver, a major update to its image editing app that brings support for macOS Mojave, machine-learning-powered automatic photo enhancement, and batch image processing among other new features.

There’s also a new option to use a light-colored user interface in addition to a refresehed version of the dark theme, allowing for easy adaption to the light and dark modes in macOS Mojave. The app is also capable of automatically switching to adapt to the current appearance of macOS.

A lot of the new and existing features can now be applied via the Automator batch processing tool, making work with large numbers of files less stressful. Other improvements include support for colorful SVG Fonts, a Continuity Camera camera, an Eraser Mode for the Pixel Paint tool, as well as a range of performance improvements and bug fixes.

The Collect app brings 360-degree editing to your mobile device

With 360-degree video capture becoming more popular and affordable there is also an increased demand for 360-degree video editing applications. The Collect app is now a new option that aims to make editing 360-degree videos as easy as possible.

The app allows you to transform 360-degree into a more easily digestible format by transforming it into directed traditional videos and guiding the viewer’s attention through smooth cinematic camera transitions. This is done by adding points of interest and sharing the final videos to social media where they can be watched just like any normal clip.

The app can frame 360-degree footage into different aspect ratios and export clips with up to 4k resolution. The app is also capable of creating so-called “tiny planet” effects and blurring away a selfie-stick that might have been used during capture.

Canon brings its Digital Photo Professional Raw processing program to iOS

Canon has ported a large chunk of its Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Raw processing software’s feature set to mobile and launched the DPP Express app for Apple’s iPad.

The new app works in conjunction with Canon’s Camera Connect app and offers a wide range of processing functions for Canon .CR3 Raw files and JPEG images. Files can be viewed, adjusted and saved to the cloud, a computer or your camera – all wirelessly.

The Camera Connect app, which also allows you to control the camera remotely, is used to wirelessly download images from your Canon camera to the iPad. Once on the tablet, images can then be processed and edited in DPP Express. The user interface has been designed with simplicity in mind and adjustment options include tone curves, picture settings, gamma levels and lens correction. All changes are applied in real time.

DPP Express also offers Multiple Editing Histories, allowing for several edited versions of the same image. Up to four editing histories let you compare effects and editing options on the same image and can be copied and pasted between files to apply the same workflow to more than one image.
