SLR Magic brings six MicroPrime lenses to Fujifilm X mount, adds a 12mm as well

Cinema lens manufacturer SLR Magic has announced it will offer all of its existing MicroPrime range in the Fujifilm X mount. Designed for full frame sensors, the lenses will attract a 1.5x angle of view shift when fitted on the APS-C Fujifilm X cameras, but the addition of a new 12mm T2.8 aims to provide a good wide angle so Fujifilm users don’t miss out.

While the other six lenses in the MicroPrime range have been available for some time in the Sony E mount, the 12mm is a completely new lens and is designed only for APS-C sensors. All the lenses in the range have the same external design and mostly weigh the same, so switching from one to another is relatively easy when a rig is in use. They have an 82mm filter thread and use the same 0.8 MOD gears.

The inclusion of the Fujifilm X mount is almost certainly a result of the recent attempts by Fujifilm to attract videographers with the advanced movie features of its X-H1 and X-T3 cameras.

The lens line up will consist of:

  • 12mm T2.8
  • 15mm T3.5
  • 18mm T2.8
  • 25mm T1.5
  • 35mm T1.3
  • 50mm T1.2
  • 75mm T1.5

MASV 3.0 data transfer service update brings mobile support, new UI and billing tweak

MASV, a cloud data transfer service targeted at media professionals, has been rebuilt from scratch, the company has announced. Its new MASV 3.0 product uses Amazon Web Services as its new cloud provider and now features 160, rather than 10, servers around the world. MASV rebuilt it uploader code and promises average upload speeds faster than Dropbox, Google Drive, and WeTransfer.

In addition to improving its speed and number of servers, MASV 3.0 features a new user interface utilizing Google’s Material Design framework while retaining the features from product version 2.0. MASV 3.0 also adds mobile support for uploading, downloading, and managing content.

The service has retained its pay-as-you-go billing model, though the service now charges based on how much data is downloaded instead of how much is uploaded. Users can upload data for free and will be charged $ 0.25 per gigabyte downloaded by the recipient. MASV also provides its users with ‘portals,’ enabling recipients to pay for the cost of a file they download from someone else.

Users can sign up for MASV 3.0 now. Charges only apply when a recipient downloads content shared by the user.

Luminar update brings improved performance and new features

Skylum Software has announced an update to its Luminar image editing software. Version 3.0.2 comes with new features as well as improvements in performance and stability.

The latter includes faster import of images and folders to the catalog and faster launch times on the Windows platform as well as faster image moving between external and internal drives and better imports of native Luminar files for Apple Mac computers.

On both platforms the software now offers a new ‘Locate Folder’ command, allowing users to find misplaced or moved folders on their system. There are also new dedicated toolbar buttons for Gallery and Single Image views.

New features for Windows users include nested folders, offline file alerts and new shortcut keys for several functions. On a Mac you can now enjoy automated database backups, new preferences for cache, catalog and backup and Aurora HDR integration among other new functions.

The new version also comes with an updated list of supported cameras to which the following models have been added:

  • Nikon: D3500, P1000, Z6, Z7
  • Panasonic: Lumix DC-LX100 II
  • Fujifilm: GFX 50R, X-T3
  • Sony: RX100VA, RX100VI, DSC-HX99, DSC-HX95
  • Leica: M10-D, M10-P, D-Lux 7

DJI brings its Geospatial Environment Online 2.0 system to airports in 32 European countries

DJI has launched its Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) 2.0 system in 32 European countries, the company has announced. Under this expansion, DJI has brought its more advanced bow tie-shaped runway safety zones as a replacement for its previous circle-based geofences. The drone company has tapped Altitude Angel as its partner for geospatial data on airports, Temporary Flight Restrictions, and other ‘sensitive areas.’

DJI first revealed its updated geofencing system for US airports in October 2018. With this version of the software, DJI’s system enables airports to better protect their runways and other sensitive areas from unwanted drones, helping avoid future incidents like the UK’s holiday airport shutdowns.

As the company previously explained, GEO 2.0 offers 3D safety zones with bow tie shapes, including low, medium, and high risk models that accommodate different security needs. Of the 32 European countries covered by this expansion, 19 weren’t previously included in DJI’s 2016 launch of its original GEO system; the other 13 countries were using its older software.

According to DJI, European countries will start getting access to GEO 2.0 this month. DJI drone owners in these countries will need to update their drone firmware and DJI GO 4 app to accommodate the new geofencing technology.

Video: UV light brings out the ethereal colors of everyday objects

The Weird Lens Museum seems not only to be interested in odd lenses, but also unusual light sources for still life set-ups. Curator Mathieu Stern has published a video showing experimental work with off-visible-spectrum specialist Pierre Luis Ferrer in which they use a handheld UV light to illuminate fruit and everyday objects, making for strange, ethereal patterns and colors.

With the lights off in the studio only the UV light is used on the subjects, which causes some materials to glow in a spectacular way. Different substances react to UV light and can glow in a range of colors, as seen in the kiwi example above.

UV lights don’t cost more than $ 10-20 for handheld varieties, so head to your nearest hardware store (or favorite online store) and pick one up to see what interesting results you end up with. Remember to pick up a pair of protective UV glasses though to keep your eyes safe; UV flashlights are a relatively weak source of UV light, but it’s better to play it safe, especially when it comes to your eyes.

Sony VENICE motion picture camera firmware v4.0 update brings 4K/120fps

Sony has detailed its upcoming version 4.0 firmware for its VENICE motion picture camera system, adding optional High Frame Rate (HFR) license speeds for shooting at up to 120fps at 4K 2.39:1 and 60fps at 6K 3:2. When using anamorphic lenses, the VENICE cameras can also be used to shoot at 75fps at 4K 4:3 and 110fps at 4K 17:9. According to Sony, these new frame rate options are ideal for commercial 4K/6K productions and movies, as well as VR work.

Joining the HFR recording is upgraded remote control functionality with Sony’s 700 Protocol, ‘giving filmmaker’s greater flexibility,’ according to the company. As well, firmware v4.0 brings support for ZEISS eXtended Data and Cooke’s most recent /i3 metadata system, progressive HD-SDI output in 25p and 29p, an extended Mask+Line setting in the system’s Frame line set-up, plus there will be selectable functions for the DVF-EL200 viewfinder’s assignable buttons.

The version 4.0 firmware update will be free; both it and the optional High Frame Rate license will arrive in June.

January 31, 2019: Sony will be upgrading the capabilities of its next-generation motion picture camera system, VENICE, by introducing High Frame Rate (HFR) shooting, advanced remote-control functionalities and Cooke/i3 and Zeiss extended metadata support, as part of its latest firmware update. Following the recent release of VENICE’s firmware Version 3.0 and the upcoming launch of its Extension System (CBK-3610XS), which was developed in collaboration with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and is currently being used to shoot the AVATAR sequels, the latest upgrade will offer filmmakers even greater creative freedom, flexibility and choice.

The new optional High Frame Rate license allows VENICE to shoot at speeds of up to 120fps at 4K 2.39:1, and 60fps at 6K 3:2 as well as up to 110fps at 4K 17:9 and 75fps at 4K 4:3 with anamorphic lenses. The new additional frame rates are particularly well-suited for drama, movie and commercial productions in 4K and 6K, as well as productions at 50/60p in 6K and VR productions using large viewing angle of 6K 3:2 in 60p.

All High Frame Rates support X-OCN recording including X-OCN XT* implemented from Ver.3.0 and High Frame Rate up to 60fps support XAVC 4K and ProRes recording.

With firmware Version 4.0, our state-of-the-art VENICE will become even more powerful, fortifying its position as the go-to solution for cinematographers who want to create stunning imagery and capture emotion in every frame.”Additionally, Version 4.0 of the VENICE firmware will introduce:

  • 700 Protocol – A control protocol developed by Sony to connect VENICE to a remote-control unit (RM-B750 or RM-B170) and an RCP-1500 series remote control panel, giving filmmakers greater flexibility in bringing their visions to life. Further expanding on the camera’s existing remote-control capabilities, the VENICE now offers paint control, iris control, recording start/stop, clip control, and more. The upgraded remote-control function also adds new workflows to extend VENICE’s use in multi-camera and live production settings, such as live concerts and fashion shows.
  • Support for Cooke’s /i third generation metadata Technology, /i3 and ZEISS eXtended Data technology (based on Cooke /i Technology) – Extended lens metadata can now be embedded straight into a RAW/X-OCN/XAVC file and HD-SDI output without the need for additional metadata equipment. The new function allows distortion and shading caused by supported lenses to be easily rectified, significantly reducing post-production costs.

Further features include an extended Mask+Line setting in the Frame line set-up, selectable functions for the assignable buttons of the DVF-EL200 viewfinder and pure Progressive HD-SDI output in 25p and 29p.

Both the free upgrade to firmware Version 4.0 and the optional HFR license will be available in June 2019.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019.2 brings AI-powered masking improved performance and more

ON1 has released an update to its ON1 Photo RAW 2019 photo editing and management software. Version 2019.2 comes with a new AI-powered masking tool, general performance enhancements and support for new camera models.

ON1 says the Quick Mask Tool lets you create high-quality masks with very little user guidance and uses color, tone, and textures to identify boundaries. You can see a demo in the video below.

To speed up your workflow the software now taps into the GPU for frequently used processes, such as returning to Browse, copy/pasting layers and masks as well as some exporting and plug-in tasks. In addition the ON1 Photo RAW now supports the Leica D-Lux 7 and Panasonic DMC-TZ101 cameras, offers tethered shooting support for the Nikon Z 6, Z 7 and D850 and comes with bunch of new lens correction profiles.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019.2 is available now for $ 99.99. Owners of any ON1 product can upgrade for $ 79.99. GoPro Fusion beta firmware brings resolution bump and 24fps recording

GoPro has announced a major beta firmware update for its Fusion 360-degree camera. With the new firmware the camera gets a resolution bump from 5.2 to 5.8 video (5.6K when stitched) and the new resolution also supports 24fps frame rates, making it easier to incorporate the Fusion into TV and film production processes.

In addition the gets a new 5.6K/24fps time lapse video mode and RAW photo support for night and time lapse modes with intervals of 5 seconds or longer.

The Fusion Studio and Adobe Premiere and After Effects plug-ins have been revamped as well. Fusion Studio v1.4 gets 5.6K exports for the new higher resolution 24fps mode and a range of updated controls and options. GoPro’s VR plug-ins have been updated for use with Adobe Premiere CC 2019 and Adobe After Effects CC 2019.

CamFi Pro Plus brings wireless tethering to 3rd party apps

Wireless camera controller maker CamFi has launched an improved version of its CamFi Pro model, the CamFi Pro Plus. Like the Pro, the new model offers wireless tethering for more than 500 camera models from all major brands.

In addition you can now directly tether to your favorite third-party applications, such as Capture One, Lightroom, EOS utility, Sony Pixel and others, all via WiFi. As before, the camera is controlled remotely via the native CamFi app.

In its own tests, CamFi found the maximum Wi-Fi speed to be approximately 10MB/sec. 20MP Raw files need approximately three seconds to transfer from your camera to the computer using the Capture One software,

The third party tethering service of CamFi Pro Plus supports Windows and Mac. The price of CamFi Pro Plus is $ 339. It can be ordered via CamFi web site. All the existing customers of CamFi Pro can order the upgrade service for $ 40.

Vello LW-500 Extendá Plus wireless controller brings remote control to select pro cameras

Camera gear company Vello has announced its new LW-500 Extendá Plus Wi-Fi Camera Controller for remote camera control. The new controller supports select Canon and Nikon, as well as most Sony cameras, making it possible to wirelessly control them using a Windows, Mac, Android or iOS device from as far away as 60m / 197ft.

The Extendá Plus brings remote access to select cameras, enabling users to browse, select, stream and share content from a smartphone, tablet or Windows PC. As well, the controller provides remote access to camera settings, enabling photographers to adjust white balance, exposure, shutter speed, and more with a real-time preview from a distance.

The LW-500 has a 10MB/s transfer rate, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, intervalometer with bulb mode and support for touch focus and live view. The controller is compatible with the following Canon and Nikon cameras:

Though most Sony Alpha cameras are supported, Vello warns some cameras don’t support all of the controller’s functions. The company provides a list [PDF] with each model’s compatibility.
