Up close: The beauty of butterfly wings

Some look like impressionistic paintings, while other look like colorful ribbons. It’s hard to imagine the subjects of British photographer Linden Gledhill’s macro photos are actually butterfly wings. A biochemist by training, Gledhill says, ‘I’m completely enchanted by the physical world around me and obsessed by its natural beauty. My career in science has magnified this feeling of awe’. See gallery

How to Gel a Beauty Dish, v.2.0

25 Nov

One thing I have learned about light and lighting: there's always different—and often better—way to do something.

A few months ago we ran a piece on gelling various soft light modifiers, wherein I listed my go-to ways to color soft light. But someone in the comments offered a different way—a way better way—and I have been using it ever since. Here's what he suggested.

Beauty in the Everyday

09 Nov

Bottles, flowers, water drops & colourYesterday I showcased an image collection of 30 fabulous photos of pencils in an attempt to show how sometimes the every day objects around us can provide photographic inspiration.

Today I thought it might be good to make this the theme of our weekly challenge. Your challenge is to take an share a photo with the theme of:

Beauty in the Everyday

I’ll let you interpret that theme any way that you wish but encourage you to carry your camera everywhere with you for at least a day or two and allow yourself to slow down and look for those beautiful things around you that you might normally rush past.

Once you’ve taken your ‘Beauty in the Everyday’ shots we’d love to see them in comments below. Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSEVERYDAYBEAUTY to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Bugs Eye View challenge – there were some fantastic shots submitted.

Nikon COOLPIX S9100 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 18x NIKKOR ED Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and Full HD 1080p Video Korean Bell of Friendship and Bell Pavilion This massive and intricately-decorated bell and pavilion was donated in 1976 to the people of Los Angeles by the people of the Republic of Korea to celebrate the bicentennial of the US independence, honor veterans of the Korean War, and to consolidate traditional friendship between the two countries. The bell is patterned after the Bronze Bell of King Songdok, which was cast in 771 AD and is still on view in South Korea today. The bell was cast in Korea and shipped to the United States. Weighing 17 tons, with a height of twelve feet and a diameter of 7-1/2 feet, the bell is made of copper and tin, with gold, nickel, lead and phosphorous added for tone quality. When it was built, it cost the Korean people 0000. Four pairs of figures, each pair consisting of the Goddess of Liberty holding a torch, and a Korean spirit , are engraved in relief on the body of the bell. Each of the Korean spirits holds up a different symbol: a symbolic design of the Korean flag; a branch of the rose of Sharon, Korea’s national flower; a branch of laurel, symbol of victory; and a dove of peace. The bell has no clapper but is struck from the outside with a wooden log. The bell is set in a pagoda-like stone structure which was constructed on the site by thirty craftsmen flown in from Korea. It took them ten months and costs 9680

Hidden Beauty: Savvy Secret Room & Passageway Engineers

16 Jan

Hidden Rooms 1

Whether they hold a cache of high-tech, Batman-style weaponry or just a quiet retreat from the kids, secret rooms can make anyone feel as if they lead a life of mystery and intrigue. A company called Creative Home Engineering designs incredible secret passage systems that are virtually undetectable, hiding private spaces behind bookcases, wine racks and ordinary-looking walls.

Hidden Rooms 5

While many secret rooms involve replacing a regular door with a bookcase on hinges, Creative Home Engineering’s carefully designed systems contain hidden cavities with steel structural support, so they won’t begin to sag or scrape over time due to weight and humidity.

Hidden Rooms 4

They’re also designed to blend flawlessly with the surrounding room. The key to security for any secret room, of course, is proper concealment. You could also get an optional vault door with a super heavy-duty locking system that can be integrated into your home security system. Other options include armored doors and biometric access control devices, like fingerprint scanners.

Hidden Rooms 6

While armor-plated panic rooms with hidden surveillance aren’t exactly accessible to most of us, financially speaking, it’s fun to dream about creating an network of secret passageways in our own homes.

The Unbearable Beauty of the Night Sky

02 Jan

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com Take a DEEP BREATH before watching this ESOCast mashup with Dr. J. The Sun is setting behind Cerro Paranal in the Chilean Atacama desert. While astronomers get ready to observe with ESO’s Very Large Telescope, Nature prepares for her own grand display. As night falls over the desert, the southern sky reveals its nocturnal beauty, leaving the spectator in silent amazement. Some people, however, don’t just stare at the spectacle. With great skill, they record these unique moments for everyone to see – they are the photographers of the night. Anyone who has been up at night in a remote, high place such as at one of ESO’s observatories in Chile may have been lucky enough to experience the splendid view of the myriad stars shining brightly from the heavens. It is a both a dream and a challenge for a photographer to capture an image of this incredible view. Today we will focus on three ESO staff members, who, during their free time, produce outstanding astrophotography. By publishing their results on the internet they share their enthusiasm for the astonishing wonders of the southern skies with a wider audience. Yuri Beletsky is an ESO Fellow and astronomer at the Paranal Observatory. When not observing with the world’s most advanced telescope, the VLT, he actively lives out his passion for taking pictures of the southern sky. “I like the night sky, I like stars and the night sky is so beautiful, you can see millions of stars
