Affinity Photo beta now available for Windows

11 Nov

Following the launch of a Mac version in summer 2015, Serif has announced the availability of Affinity Photo for Windows beta. This version of the software has been in development for several months, and though the final Windows version hasn’t yet been released, anyone can download the beta now and try it out for free. As with any beta application, however, users should expect to encounter bugs.

Affinity Photo is an image editing program from Serif that was originally launched only for macOS. The company bills its software as a much cheaper but no less robust alternative to Adobe Photoshop. The Windows beta was scheduled to launch earlier this summer, but was delayed for reasons that are unclear. Those who download the beta will be the first users to try the following features, which will be available in Affinity Photo version 1.5 for Mac next month:

  • HDR merge
  • Focus stacking
  • Macros
  • Tone mapping
  • Batch processing
  • 360 degree image editing

Though the beta version is free, Serif plans to offer the finalized Affinity Photo for Windows at the same $ 49.99 USD price point as the Mac version. Beta users who encounter bugs are encouraged to report them in the software’s related forum.

The Sony a99 ll will be available on time – but in very short supply

27 Oct

Sony has announced that its a99 ll full-frame SLT camera will go on sale on November 25th as expected, but it will not be able to supply nearly enough to meet demand straight away. The company has issued a statement saying that domestic demand has ‘significantly’ exceeded the Japanese company’s sales plans and that customers should expect some delay in the delivery of ordered cameras.

The 42MP camera offers a top shooting rate of 12 fps and features a combined phase detection and contrast detection AF system that the company says provides speed, accuracy and improved tracking. The camera was the surprise launch of Photokina this year, as many assumed Sony had abandoned its SLT cameras in favor of the more popular mirrorless models.

It seems even Sony has been caught off-guard by the demand of the a99 ll, and if there are to be delays in the Japanese market there will almost certainly be delays in the rest of the world. The a99 ll is due to be priced at ¥388,880/$ 3200/£3000/€3500. For more information see the Sony website.

Popular Prisma photo app now available on Android

27 Jul

Just when we thought filter apps were falling by the wayside, along came Prisma – a wildly popular iOS app now available for Android. Prisma uses a mix of neural networks, artificial intelligence and cloud-based machine learning to apply a range of filter effects, mimicking styles of artists such as Munch or Picasso, to your images. Since its launch a month ago for iOS it has become one of the year’s most popular imaging apps.

Until now, Android users had been limited to a buggy beta-version app, but today Prisma Labs, the developers of the app, has finally released the production version on Google Play. As on iOS, the app creates dynamic brush strokes and pencil drawings based on your images. Filters are fine-tunable and the final results can be shared in a variety of ways. Prisma for Android is compatible with devices running version 4.1 or newer of the Google mobile OS and can be downloaded and installed for free from the Google Play Store now.

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.6, Lightroom 6.6, and Camera Raw 9.6 now available

09 Jun

Adobe has released Lightroom CC 2015.6, Lightroom 6.6, and Camera Raw 9.6, primarily fixing bugs and adding camera profiles as well as Raw support. Lightroom CC and Camera Raw 9.6 users, however, also get a new feature called Guided Upright that reduces/eliminates keystone effects in buildings, straightens images and fixes horizons.

Guided Upright adds a semi-automated function to an existing feature, using guides drawn by the user to apply perspective corrections. It’s found within a new ‘Transform’ panel, which also houses manual perspective correction sliders. Users manually draw 2 to 4 guide lines on the photo, which the software uses to transform the image via Upright. Those manual perspective correction sliders can be used to ‘fine tune’ the resulting image when necessary.

Lightroom CC 2015.6 / 6.6 and Camera Raw 9.6 have added support for the following cameras:

  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II
  • Leica M-D (Typ 262)
  • Nikon COOLPIX B700
  • Panasonic DMC-GX85/GX80/GX7MK2

The software has also added camera matching color profiles for the Pentax K-3 II, K-1, and 645Z cameras. Both versions of Lightroom also received tethered camera support for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, Canon EOS 80D, and Canon EOS 1300D / Canon Rebel T6.

The full list of new lens profile support in Lightroom 2015.6 / 6.6 is available here, and the list for Camera Raw 9.6 lens profile support is available here.
