Available Light Portraits: Weekly Photography Challenge

07 Sep

This week we are celebrating the launch of our brand new Portrait Lighting eBook so I thought it might be fun to have a portraiture themed weekly challenge.

Bus People

Your challenge is to take and share a portrait image that only uses the available light in the setting where you’re shooting.

Giada

So if you’re outside during the day – shoot only using natural light. If you’re inside, only use the light in the room (window light, the normal artificial lights in the room etc).

golden light

So – you can use artificial light but no your speed light or any studio lights – just what is there in the setting you’re shooting in. I hope that makes sense!

Once you’ve taken your ‘Available Light’ photos, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our comments tool to do so.

who am i?

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSAVAILABLELIGHT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Soft challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Corel has announced Paintshop Pro X6 ‘Ultimate’, which improves on the previous version of PSP X6 with the addition of built-in automatic image correction by Athentech Imaging. The update to 64-bit architecture should result in better performance on modern operating systems, as well. Apparently, the new software was created after a research study indicated that ‘more power, more speed and improved usability were the changes users most wanted to see in X6’. Who knew? Kubrick’s f/0.7 lenses now available for rent (but start saving up)

06 Aug

50mmf07.jpg

Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick pushed the boundaries of moviemaking in many ways, and was responsible for some of the most enduring visuals in cinema. When he made Barry Lydon in 1975, Kubrick shot with two ultra-rare Carl Zeiss primes, which had originally been created for NASA. Using the 50mm and 35mm f/0.7 lenses, Kubrick was able to film some scenes purely by candlelight. Now, Germany-based company P+S Technik has announced that they’ve modified a PS-Cam X35 HD to be able to accept Kubrick’s primes, and the whole package is available to rent. Click through for more details.

This ultra-fast short telephoto ‘portrait’ lens is for Micro Four Thirds cameras only, and will offer similar photographic characteristics to an 85mm F1.9 lens on full frame in terms of angle of view, depth of field control, and background blur. It has a 10-bladed diaphragm, and features manual focus and aperture operation – the latter can be made clickless for movie recording.

Sigma has announced its 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens for APS-C DSLRs – the world’s first constant F1.8 zoom -will be available from July at a cost of around $ 799. The lens covers a 27-52.5mm equivalent range, and will be available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts. The lens will offer the depth-of-field equivalent of a constant F2.7 on full-frame, and allow the use of lower ISO settings in low light, which may under-cut the need for some photographers to change formats.

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters is Now Available on DVD, and Netflix Streaming

23 May

©Gregory Crewdson

Netflix have acquired the rights to stream Ben Shapiro’s excellent 77-minute documentary, Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. You can also buy it outright on DVD for $ 24.

Sadly, the Netflix access this is US-only (maybe Canada? nope!) and only for Netflix streaming subscribers. But this is still far and away the biggest audience to have had access to the film.

There’s no telling how long it will be up to stream. Netflix is notorious for having, then not having, the rights to a movie. So just in case, don’t wait too long. You can stream it here.

(Many thanks to reader Tim Kamppinen for the heads-up!)
