Lightroom CC 2015.12 arrives with bug fixes, new camera and lens support

Adobe has just launched Lightroom 2015.12, adding support for new lenses and cameras, including the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, Nikon D7500, and Leica TL2. The update also fixes several bugs, including a problem with missing iPhone video GPS data, with the wrong photo being shown in the navigator preview pane, ‘erratic deletion of files,’ trouble exporting to Flickr, and more.

As far as new support goes, users now have access to ‘new color matching camera profiles,’ too.

Adobe advises that some Lightroom customers could still experience crashing problems if they’re using older AMD GPU drivers, and that they should update to Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.1 to fix the problem.

The previous version of Lightroom CC (2015.10) was released in April. The company explains that it decided to skip releasing Camera Raw 9.11 ‘due to the unfortunate events that occurred on that day,’ instead jumping straight to version 9.12. As a result, Adobe went straight from Lightroom 2015.10 to 2015.12 in order to keep the two products’ names in sync.

Leica M10 1.9.4.0 firmware arrives with major bug fix

Leica has released firmware 1.9.4.0 for the M10, correcting a bug from firmware 1.7.4.0 that produces black images in some cases during short exposures. The company has also advised M10 owners on how to handle SD cards issues that may arise in some circumstances, stating that cards with speeds of at least 80MB/s should be used.

The latest firmware can be downloaded here.

The full M10 firmware v. 1.9.4.0 change-log reads:

  • With the previous firmware 1.7.4.0, a larger selection of SD cards were made compatible with the Leica M10. Unfortunately we discovered, that in certain cases, the firmware 1.7.4.0 could produce black images when using short exposure times. This bug has now been fixed with firmware 1.9.4.0.
  • All improvements from previous firmware versions are included in firmware 1.9.4.0. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Improvements of SD card compatibility

  • With the Firmware 1.7.4.0 a larger choice of SD cards is compatible with the Leica M10.
  • With the last Firmware, certain SD cards were not recognized, or the complete write speed could not be used with the camera.
  • The Leica M10 supports SDHC/SDXC cards from 1GB up to 512 GB. We recommend to use cards with write speed 80 MB/s or higher in order not to restrict the cameras performance. In single cases it can occur that the speed, stated by the cards manufacturers, differs from the effective read or write speed in the Leica M10.
  • Use UHS I cards instead of UHS II. The M10 is compatible with UHS II cards, but does not use the full UHS II speed. Leica performs ongoing compatibility tests of the latest cards available in the market. We ask for your understanding that due to changes in production and software, Leica cannot guarantee a 100% compatibility of the recommended cards.

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.9 arrives with new camera and lens support, loads of bug fixes

In addition to its Camera Raw update, Adobe has released Lightroom CC 2015.9, adding support for additional cameras and lens profiles, as well as nearly two dozen bug fixes. The update is available now; existing users can download the latest version by selecting ‘Help’ > ‘Updates’ in the application’s menu.

Adobe Lightroom 2015.9 adds support for the following cameras:

Lastly, the new Lightroom CC update corrects 21 different bugs and issues as detailed in the following changelog:

  • Upright error where the “Update” button was incorrectly enabled when Upright is unable to find a correction.
  • Lens Profile Auto Matching was not working for Zeiss Batis 85mm lenses.
  • Cursor movements on Point Curves were erratic
  • Issue related to abnormal Lightroom exit when using Full Screen mode. The issue only occurred on Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra)
  • Develop Module Locked after deleting images while using two displays
  • Live Photos created on iPhoto caused the JPEG to be treated like an XMP sidecar file
  • Instead of deleting currently selected photo, deletes face tag from previous viewed photo
  • Images from Canon EOS G7X MK II sometimes had a green color cast
  • Unable to change the image after deleting a rejected photo in develop module
  • Export was taking longer than expected.

Fujifilm X-T20 arrives with new 24MP sensor and 4K video capture

Fujifilm has announced the X-T20, a mid-priced sister model to the enthusiast X-T2. The X-T20 gains many of the T2’s features, including the 24MP X-Trans sensor and its advanced autofocus system. The X-T20 can also shoot UHD 4K video at up to 30 fps.

Much like its predecessor, the X-T20 has a 2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder with 0.62x magnification. It also retains Wi-Fi and the same level of external control as the X-T10.

The X-T20 misses out on the X-T2’s weather sealing, AF point joystick, ISO dial, Log output and battery grip option but gains a touchscreen that works in stills, video and playback modes, along with a built-in pop-up flash.

The X-T20 will be available from late February 2017 and will come body-only or with a choice of a 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS lens or the more expensive 18-55mm F2.8-4 OIS. The body will cost around $ 900/£799, $ 1000/£899 with the basic zoom and $ 1200/£1099 with the premium zoom.

The X-T20 is the successor to the FUJIFILM X-T10 and builds on its outstanding image quality, intuitive design, and versatility with a new APS-C sized 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processing engine. Advanced Imaging for the Discerning Enthusiast
The FUJIFILM X-T20 improves on the X-T10 with a 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and a new Video option to the Drive Dial to enable instantaneous switching from still photo shooting to the video recording mode. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops, while the LCD monitor uses a tilting touchscreen panel for intuitive operation at almost any angle. The X-T20 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera chooses the optimum settings for a given scene.

The new sensor’s enhanced signal processing technology has even greater control over digital noise with an improved ISO sensitivity of ISO12800 available as a regular ISO option. At ultra-high ISO settings, the camera produces low-noise images, with deep blacks and smooth tones, delivering beautiful images even in low light conditions.

The FUJIFILM X-T20 also has a Grain Effect function for reproducing distinctive graininess seen in photographs taken with film cameras. The function can be set to Strong or Weak, and can be combined with any of the Film Simulation modes. You can easily obtain the look of film-based photos, with the effect most obvious when the image is printed out.

Compact and Lightweight Body Makes Photography Fun and Easy
With the FUJIFILM X-T20, users will find a compact body that is both strong and light and made from magnesium alloy. The top plate features three precision-milled aluminum dials which give the X-T20 a premium feel and allow users to easily adjust the aperture, shutter speed and shooting functions while concentrating on picture taking.

The X-T20 features a 3.0 inch 1.04M-dot tilting TFT color LCD touchscreen monitor for both above head and close to the ground shooting. By combining the Touch Shot function with the tilt LCD monitor, you can get even more creative. Place the camera on the ground and use Touch Shot for a child’s face or a pet’s eye view, or hold it above a crowd of people or an obstacle for high-angle shooting.

Easy Touch, Swipe and Pinch Controls
The LCD monitor in the X-T20 uses a capacitive touchscreen panel to facilitate high-angle shots, taken from above a crowd of people or an obstacle, as well as low-angle shots simulating the ground level perspective.

Users can also opt to use the LCD monitor as a touchscreen to easily access shooting and playback modes. When shooting with the X-T20, you can use the touchscreen to select the focus area, focus on a specific point, and combine the actions of focusing and shooting in succession.

For playback, users can enjoy swipe to scroll through images, double-tap to enlarge, drag the image once enlarged, along with pinch-out and pinch-in sizing.

Improved AF Performance for Moving Subjects
The FUJIFILM X-T20 has an expanded number of focusing points, up from 49 in the previous model to 91 (up to 325 points). Approximately 40% of the imaging area (the center area containing 49 focusing points) is covered with phase detection AF pixels to form a fast and precise phase detection AF area that can be used in a variety of scenes.

By redesigning the AF algorithm from the ground up, the X-T20 can now autofocus more accurately on points of light, low-contrast objects and subjects with fine details such as bird feathers and animal fur. The read speed of the Contrast AF system has been doubled compared to the previous model to enable faster and more accurate autofocusing. During video recording, the AF point transitions smoothly to track a moving subject to create natural looking footage.

Users can choose from a Single Point mode, useful when accurate focusing on a subject is required, and a Zone mode that allows them to select a 3×3, 5×5 or 7×7 zone out of the 91-point AF area. The centrally positioned 3×3 and 5×5 zones, in particular, deliver fast focusing thanks to the on-sensor phase detection AF. The Wide/Tracking mode is a combination of the Wide mode (during AF-S), in which the camera automatically identifies and tracks the area in focus across the 91-point AF area, and the predictive Tracking mode (during AF-C), which uses the entire 91-point area to continue tracking a subject. This feature enables continuous focusing on a subject that is moving up and down, left and right or towards and away from the camera.

The X-T20 features an AF-C Custom setting, which enhances focus tracking performance when shooting in the Continuous AF (AF-C) mode. In the AF-C Custom setting, users can choose from five AF presets, including:

  • Preset 1 (Standard Setting for Multi-Purpose) is a standard setting that can be applied when shooting moving subjects as a whole. It is similar to the conventional AF-C setting, and is selected by default when no AF-C Custom setting is specified.
  • Preset 2 (Ignore Obstacles & Continue to Track Subject) is suitable when obstacles are likely to come into a selected focus area, blocking a subject.
  • Preset 3 (For Accelerating / Decelerating Subjects) is best suited to situations such as motorsports, which involves a subject that makes major speed changes including rapid acceleration or deceleration. It is particularly effective when using linear motor-driven lenses capable of high-speed AF.
  • Preset 4 (For Suddenly Appearing Subjects) gives focusing priority to a subject closest to the camera in the selected focus area, so as to swiftly focus on a subject that suddenly comes into the frame.
  • Preset 5 (For Erratically Moving & Accelerating or Decelerating Subjects) is suitable for shooting field sports in which subjects accelerate or decelerate rapidly, and also move erratically.

Throwback Thursday: the Panasonic GH1 – mirrorless video arrives

Last week at CES Panasonic officially unveiled its newest flagship model, the DC-GH5, a video/stills hybrid camera that looks to be an indie filmmaker’s dream. To see just how far we’ve come, for this week’s TBT we decided to take a look back at where it all began: the Panasonic DMC-GH1.

The GH1 was announced way back in March, 2009, a few months after Panasonic’s first mirrorless camera, the G1. The G1 delivered on the promise of a mirrorless ILC system, but despite all its advances it lacked support for video. Fast forward a few months and Panasonic gave us the GH1 – essentially a G1 with video features added.

It’s hard to remember now, but back then there weren’t many ILCs that captured video. The best known was the Canon 5D Mark II, which was famous for its full-frame depth of field and low light capabilities. Although it was based around a smaller Four Thirds sensor, GH1 quickly became a favorite of the video crowd thanks to its compact size, excellent video specs, and (relatively) good codec.

The camera shot 1080/24p as well as 720/60p video. (1080/24p video was actually encapsulated in a 1080/60i wrapper.) 1080/24p was a magic number for video enthusiasts and indie filmmakers, and thanks to the camera’s multi-aspect sensor it was possible to capture a lens’s full angle of view when shooting video in 16:9 format.

Although the camera’s 1080p footage was competitive with other cameras from the era, I can tell you from first-hand experience that it tended to fall apart quickly if the image was too complex or involved a lot of motion, thanks to the 24 Mbps AVCHD codec. On the other hand, 720p footage generally held up much better, and that’s actually how I ended up shooting the camera most of the time.

Of course, one advantage we had back then was that most people weren’t actually viewing content on HDTVs or at 1080 resolution online, so it was a reasonable tradeoff. Heck, I even did a bit of commercial work for a client using the GH1’s 720p footage, and they loved it.

When it came to stills, the GH1’s 12MP photos held up well against APS-C cameras of the time, such as the Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i). On the other hand, its performance left a little to be desired: from power on to taking a photo took 1.3 seconds. The camera could manage a respectable 3.3 fps of continuous Raw shooting… up to a total of 4 frames before the buffer filled up.

Perhaps what I really loved most about the GH1, and part of the reason it got so much traction in the market, was the virtually universal lens mount of the Micro Four Thirds system. This was particularly important to videographers and filmmakers as it allowed us to utilize virtually any glass we could lay our hands on with the system, a fact I took full advantage of by attaching all my old Nikkor primes to the camera with adapters. Crazy times, I tell you.

With a launch price of $ 1499 (including the 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 kit lens) the GH1 seemed expensive at the time. In that context, the $ 1999 price for the GH5, which can run rings around the GH1 in its sleep, doesn’t seem too far out of line.

I have a GH1 sitting on my desk as I write this. I may have to charge up the battery and do a shootout against the GH5 as soon as we get it back in.

Rugged Fujifilm XP120 arrives just in time for winter

It’s snowy season here in the Northern Hemisphere, so Fujifilm’s release of its XP120 is well-timed. The XP120 has a 16.4MP BSI-CMOS sensor and a 28-140mm lens, and is waterproof to 20m/65ft, shockproof to 1.8m/5.7ft and freezeproof to -10C/+14F. 

Other features include a 3″ LCD, unique ‘Cinemagraph’ feature, which ‘produces still photos with moving elements’, 1080/60p video (with a wind filter) and Wi-Fi.

The XP120 will come in four colors – blue, sky blue, green and yellow – and will be available in February for $ 229.

Fujifilm X-T2 tethered shooting firmware arrives, also adds button lock

Fujifilm has released its much anticipated new firmware for the X-T2 that enables tethered shooting with the forthcoming Tethered Shooting Plug-in Pro application, but has added a number of other fixes and a new feature.

Fujifilm X-T2 users will now be able to set up a function button to lock all the body buttons of the camera so that they don’t get pressed by accident during shooting. Users can determine which button they want to use for this purpose via the custom settings menu.

As with previous updates for the X-T1 and X-Pro2 this new firmware fixes an AF reliability issue when using the longer end of the XF 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR and a problem that meant that Nissin’s i40 flash unit wouldn’t fire.

Further fixes include issues around exposure in very specific conditions, connectivity and the high speed burst mode when used with flash.

Nikon has released the latest iteration of its workhorse 70-200mm F2.8 lens. The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8E FL ED VR, as it is known, has a new optical design, improved Vibration Reduction as well as an electromagnetic diaphragm.

The lens has a total of 22 elements, with 6 ED, 1 fluorite and 1 high refractive index element. A Nano Crystal Coat reduces flare and ghosting while fluorine coatings on the front and rear class helps prevent smudging. Vibration Reduction has been improved, now reducing shake by 4 stops (vs 3.5). Fujifilm X-A3 arrives with new sensor and touchscreen in tow

Fujifilm has announced its X-A3 entry-level mirrorless camera. Unlike other X-series cameras, its 24MP sensor uses a traditional Bayer color filter, rather than X-Trans. The standard ISO range is 200-6400, which can expand to 100-25,600 if needed.

The autofocus system offers 49 points in single AF mode and 77 points in the wide/tracking modes, but it lacks on-sensor phase detection like more expensive Fujifilm cameras. Also added is the ability to link metering and AF areas.

The camera has a 3″ LCD that flips upward by 180 degrees, and selfies can be taken using the command dial on the back of the camera, which gives you a firmer grip on the camera. The LCD is touch-enabled and includes the usual bells-and-whistles that come along with it, plus a new ‘touch zoom’ feature.

The X-A3 has many of Fujifilm’s Film Simulation modes, including Pro Neg.Hi, Pro Neg.Std, and Classic Chrome, but lacks the new ACROS mode found on its higher-end models. Full HD video is supported at 60p and 24p. Wi-Fi is also built-in.

The X-A3 will come bundled with the XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS II lens in you choice of three colors: silver, brown or pink. It will be available in October at a price of $ 599.

The rear LCD employs a slide-and-tilt mechanism so that it is not blocked by the camera body when tilted 180 degrees to maintain 100% visibility. Users will be able to view the entire screen for precise selfie composition.

When taking a selfie, users can focus and release the shutter by pressing the vertical command dial, found directly below your index finger that also minimizes camera shake. The new Self Timer function now offers Smile Detection, Buddy Timer and Group Timer modes. Even without having to press the command dial or release button, the shutter is released when subjects smile, when two people come close together, or when a specified number of people come into the frame. The X-A3 also automatically activates Eye Detection AF when the rear LCD is titled upwards, and the Portrait Enhancer mode now offers three-step adjustments, using touchscreen operations. The addition of the skin-tone brightening function takes your portrait photography to a new level.

Get Creative with the X-A3

The X-A3 offers a total of eleven Film Simulation modes. Enjoy Fujifilm’s original expressions of tonality, such as the true-to-life colors of PROVIA (standard), the vibrant tones and saturated colors of Velvia (vivid), the soft tones of ASTIA (soft) or the documentary-style tones of CLASSIC CHROME. Monochrome and Sepia modes are also available.

The normal sensitivity range covers ISO200 to ISO6400, while extended sensitivity settings of ISO12800 and even ISO25600 can be selected when you want to minimize camera shake. The X-A3 produces clear images with astonishingly low noise, even on low-light nightscapes and indoor shots where high ISOs are essential. And with the Advanced Filters, users can easily produce unique and creative effects. A total of ten Advanced Filters are available, including the new “Fisheye “and Cross Screen “as well as Toy Camera, Miniature, Dynamic Tone, Pop Color, Soft Focus, High Key, Low Key and Partial Color.

Corel PaintShop Pro X9 arrives with improved workflow

Corel has launched PaintShop Pro X9, the latest version of its photo editing software. With the X9 version, PaintShop Pro adds seven new features, as well as two enhancements to existing features, including new Interactive Gradients, expanded RAW camera profile support, and new Project Templates. Joining this release is PaintShop Pro X9 Ultimate, which includes the X9 software plus an add-ons collection with AfterShot 3, Corel Live Screen Capture and Athentech’s Perfectly Clear 2 SE.

PaintShop Pro X9’s new features are comprised of project templates, screenshot capturing and editing, support for Windows Real Time Stylus, a new Guided Tour, edit history exporting, Intel RealSense XDM support and Interactive Gradient fill. In addition to those new features, Corel says X9 brings a few ‘enhanced’ features: support for Windows Server 2016, 15 new camera RAW profiles, and an improved workflow that ‘streamlines many common tasks.’

PaintShop Pro X9 is available now for $ 79.99 USD/CAN, 69.99 EUR, £59.99, and $ 99 AUD.
