Apple and Google teaming up to buy Kodak patents

13 Dec

shared:kodakextColor.jpg

Financial news service Bloomberg is reporting Apple and Google are working together to purchase some of Kodak’s imaging patents. The companies are said to be working together – lending more weight to reports in the Wall Street Journal from back in August. The story suggests the two companies, along with the groups of smaller companies with whom they’d been preparing bids, will offer more than $ 500m for the patents. Such a figure would give Kodak access to $ 830m of external funding that is dependent on the value of the patent deal.

Low-res iPad Mini likely a disappointment for photographers in Apple refresh

24 Oct

iPadMini.png

Apple has announced an updated iPad but its low-resolution iPad Mini is likely to be a disappointment for photographers looking to do precision work. While the fourth-generation iPad features a 263 pixel-per-inch ‘Retina’ display, the 7.9″ (20cm)  iPad Mini makes do with a 163 pixel-per-inch panel with a quarter of the pixel count (just 1024 x 768, rather than its big brother’s 2048 x 1536 pixels). The iPad Mini’s screen is step behind the latest panels, such as the 217ppi, 1280 x 800 pixel display in the less expensive Nexus 7. The fourth-gen iPad also features a faster A6X processor that is claimed to offer twice the performance, plus an HD (720p) front-facing camera.

Lytro meeting suggests Apple looking beyond conventional photography

25 Jan

Lytro_stacked.png

Steve Jobs met Lytro founder Ren Ng to discuss the photographic aspects of Apple products, according to a new book about the company. Details are understandably sparse but, according to Adam Lashinsky’s book ‘Inside Apple,’ Jobs asked Ng to prepare a list of three things he’d like Lytro to do with Apple. If nothing else, the story is interesting as it suggests Jobs was as excited by the Lytro and its effect on photography as the rest of the tech community has been. It also suggests Apple’s approach to mobile photography might overlap with Lytro’s aim of creating something fun, shareable and engaging, rather than attempting to replace conventional photography. Such an approach would certainly be in keeping with Apple’s ‘disruptive’ approach to technology. (from 9-to-5Mac) [Updated with response from Lytro]
