Annual Best-of-Strobist Collections

03 Jan
Starting in 2008 we began the tradition of taking a pause as each New Year approached. The result was the time a space to reflect back on the best work of the year—my choices and yours:

Roger Cicala reveals winners of First Annual Photogeek contest

02 Dec

Roger Cicala of LensRentals has revealed the winners of his ‘First Annual Photogeek Geek Photo Contest’. What was originally intended as a light-hearted joke ended up receiving over 400 entries from at least 20 countries, and the impressive quality of the entries caused a real headache for the judges. After a lot of deliberation, Rishi Sanyal won ‘Best in Show’ for his remarkable ‘MacroSetUp’ series. Click through to see the extraordinarily geeky winning images, and a link to the full contest gallery.

Not just any competition: Roger Cicala’s First Annual Photogeek Contest

01 Nov

zeisss21cutaway-copy.jpg

Roger Cicala of LensRentals is man after our own hearts, never happier than when tinkering with lenses and writing about what he finds, however obscure it may turn out to be. And in celebration of this, he’s launched what we’d like to think of as the ultimate photo competition: The First Annual Photogeek Geek Photo Contest. Full of entertaining categories, and with at least one hugely desirable prize on offer, it’s open for entries until November 15th. It’s Roger’s competiton so we’re not going to reveal too much here; head over to LensRentals and have a look. If nothing else, it should make you laugh.

Annual Road Trip and Major Site Revisions

05 Aug

By the time you read this I'll be on vacation with the family. We're taking a road trip north into New England and Canada, where none of us have ever been before. (The above is in Maine, on the way to Prospect Harbor on Saturday night.)

That doesn't mean Strobist is closed. Today we're announcing a completely updated Lighting 101, among other things…

12th Annual South Platte River All Club Paddle

16 Apr

The annual spring kickoff paddling trip on the South Platte River took place this year with two weeks delay on April 6, 2013, due to a winter weather. Typically, this trip is organized on the third Saturday of March. It starts in Evans Riverside Park and goes 9 miles downriver to Kersey or 14 miles to Kuner wuth a lunch break at the second dam portage. Several Colorado paddling clubs participate (Rocky Mountain Canoe Club, Poudre Paddlers Club, Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club, High Country River Rafters, and Colorado White Water Association), but no membership is required to paddle.

We had a good weather this year with some signs of spring, but pretty low water, ~550 cfs at Kersey. I took the pictures above with my Canon 5D Mark II DSLR camera. They can be licensed for editorial use from my stock photography portfolio

This year I paddled Badfish inflatable SUP in a longer version of this trip to Kuner. It was not a first time of this paddleboard on the South Platte since I started my SUP season in early February this year with upstream and downstream paddling at Kersey.

I had a nice paddling with some problems on several shallow spots. I paddled a couple of miles without the center 10″ fin, but tracking of Badfish was pretty bad. I will try a shorter fin in my next paddling.
