Sony World Photography Awards 2013 announce shortlist of finalists

The World Photography Organisation has announced the shortlists for the professional, open and youth categories of the 2013 Sony World Photography awards. This year’s competition saw the highest number of submissions to date with more than 122,000 entries from 170 countries. The shortlist offers an insight into an impressive gallery of images. Winners are scheduled to be announced in March and April. Creators of Raspberry Pi computer announce $25 camera module

The makers of Raspberry Pi – the popular low-cost computer – have announced the development of a new camera module, expected to cost $ 25. Since the first version of Raspberry Pi was released early last year, more than half a million of the low-cost boards have been sold to eager enthusiasts all over the world, and put to use doing everything from running games to powering a voice-activated coffee machine (yes, really). Details on the forthcoming camera module are vague, but it is expected to offer at least 5MP resolution and the ability to capture HD video. Click through for more details.

Polaroid to announce an Android interchangeable lens camera at CES 2013

Polaroid appears to be set to announce an Android OS-based interchangeable lens camera at the CES 2013 trade show. Imaging Resource has written an article in which Scott Hardy, President and CEO of Polaroid, has confirmed the upcoming announcement. While Scott has commented that “Additional information and specs will be released during the show”, a product image on a Russian social media site shows a Nikon 1 series-like camera body and kit lens, while leaked specs suggest the camera runs Android 4, and features an 18.1-megapixel sensor and 3.5″ touchscreen display. (From Imaging Resource)

Samsung and Time Out announce contest for Londoners and New Yorkers

Samsung and Time Out magazine have announced the ‘Share your Now’ contest. Participants can upload images they have captured of New York or London to a dedicated portal on the Time Out website. Each week, five entrants from each city will win a Samsung Galaxy Camera. When the nine-week competition closes on 4th March, Time Out will commission three winners from London, and three from New York, ‘to share their take on their own city’, using their Android OS-based camera. These final images will be featured on the front cover of region-specific Time Out magazines. The winners will also receive a free trip to the other city. A grand winner will be announced after readers vote for their favorite cover photo. The competition is open until 10 February 2013.

Phase One, Mamiya and Profoto announce wireless flash grip for 645DF

Phase One, Mamiya and lighting manufacturer Profoto have jointly announced the V-Grip Air, a vertical grip with built-in wireless flash trigger. The V-Grip Air, designed for the Phase One and Mamiya 645DF cameras allows wireless flash control at sync speeds up to 1/1600s. The wireless system works with all current and most modern Profoto flash systems and can be used with other makers’ flashes using an optional Profoto transceiver unit. The grip will be priced at 90/€990 while the transceiver unit for third-party flashes costs 9/€149.
