Yes, it’s possible:

Sony may announce an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera, potentially called the a5, positioned at a price below $ 1000 USD.

This information comes from Sony Alpha Rumors, which labels the rumor as “wild” and notes that it comes from an indirect channel. However, Sony Alpha Rumors also acknowledges a few pieces of evidence:

First, Sony recently registered a pair of cameras, one of which “is a high-end camera” while the other is “a more consumer-oriented camera.” Both will launch in the coming months; a more recent rumor suggests that the high-end model will debut toward the end of July, with the consumer-oriented model released in the August/September timeframe.

We already know that the high-end body is the Sony a7S II successor, likely called the Sony a7S III, and positioned as a professional video/stills hybrid.

But what about the other camera?

Well, if this rumor is correct, it would be the A5. A reliable report does suggest that Sony will be releasing a “new kind of full-frame camera,” and an entry-level full-frame model would surely fit the bill.

A sub-$ 1000 full-frame camera is certainly within the realm of possibility. Canon’s EOS RP is currently available for around $ 900 USD, and the EOS 6D Mark II comes in at $ 1200. But up until now, Sony has been focused mainly on three distinct camera lineups:

The full-frame a7X series, including the a7S II, the a7R IV, and a7 III models.

The APS-C a6X00 series, including the a6400, a6100, and a6600 models.

And the full-frame a9 series, which consists of the a9 and the a9 II.

This means that an a5 would offer a lot of potential for Sony, assuming the company can position it well. An a5 could allow long-time Sony a6X00 users to upgrade for improved image quality, offering a bridge between the a6X00s and the a7Xs. And plenty of Nikon and Canon photographers looking to jump on the Sony bandwagon could be enticed by such an affordable full-frame option, giving Sony the opportunity to pitch its higher-end products to more customers.

Of course, this is all speculation, but I can’t help but feel excited at the prospect of a Sony a5!

Canon to Announce Two Cameras, 5 RF Lenses on July 9

For months, we’ve waited for the Canon EOS R5 and R6.

And for months, it’s felt like neither camera would ever actually appear.

But now we have a date to report:

July 9th.

That’s the when the EOS R5 and EOS R6 will officially launch.

While the full details of the two cameras have yet to be revealed, we do know quite a lot thanks to leaks, as well as Canon’s EOS R5 teaser.

So here’s what we can confidently say about the EOS R5:

  • 8K video
  • 20 fps with the electronic shutter
  • 12 fps with the mechanical shutter
  • IBIS
  • Dual card slots

Canon has stayed surprisingly quiet regarding the megapixel count, only revealing that “the EOS R5 is set to raise the bar in high level still and video capture empowered by [a] new CMOS sensor and the new DIGIC processor.”

But given the 8K video resolution, you can expect at least 35 MP or so, and previous rumors have offered a plausible figure of around 45 MP.

Note that a 45 MP full-frame sensor at the heart of the EOS R5 would put this camera on the map in essentially every way; the fast continuous shooting, the 8K video, the dual card slots, the IBIS, plus a 45 MP sensor will make this a professional body through-and-through.

Canon EOS R5

That said, the EOS R6 is also shaping up to be a powerful camera in its own right.

And while Canon has confirmed nothing regarding the R6, the ever-reliable Canon Rumors has offered a set of likely specs:

  • 20 MP full-frame sensor
  • 20 fps with the electronic shutter
  • 12 fps with the mechanical shutter
  • 4K/60p (oversampled from 5K)
  • IBIS
  • Dual card slots
  • A 5M-dot EVF
  • The same AF system as the EOS R5

Assuming these rumors turn out to be true, then the EOS R6 will be positioned a step above both the Canon EOS R and RP, Canon’s two current full-frame mirrorless bodies. The one exception is in resolution, where the EOS R6 falls short (the EOS RP packs a 26 MP sensor, and the EOS R reaches just over 30 MP). But while it’s possible that the EOS R6 will turn out to have a sensor size in the 24-26 MP range, we may be looking at a camera designed for low-light shooting, one that sacrifices pixel count for better high-ISO performance.

Unfortunately, it may be some time before we’re able to do any hands-on comparisons. According to Canon Rumors, the EOS R6 won’t ship until August, with the EOS R5 shipping around a month later (thanks to COVID-related delays).

Also note that the July 9th announcement won’t just cover these two cameras; we’ll also see the release of a number of exciting RF lenses, including:

  • A 50mm f/1.8 (a nifty fifty!)
  • A 70-200mm f/4L IS lens
  • An 85mm f/2 macro lens
  • A 100-500mm f/4-7.1 IS super-telephoto zoom
  • A 600mm f/11 DO IS lens
  • An 800mm f/11 DO IS lens
  • A 1.4x teleconverter
  • A 2x teleconverter

Personally, I’m most interested to see the 50mm f/1.8, which should offer an affordable way to break into Canon’s mirrorless lineup. But the macro lens (with an f/2 aperture!) and the 100-500mm super-telephoto lens should be exciting, as well.

If you’re interested in any of this equipment, you don’t have long to wait. July 9th is almost here, so prepare yourself for a lot of new options.

Sony to Announce Ultra-Wide 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Lens

If you’re a landscape photographer, you’re in for a treat.

Sony is preparing to announce its brand-new, ultra-wide 12-24mm GM lens, which will offer a great range of focal lengths, an impressive f/2.8 maximum aperture, and (likely) stellar optics.

Let’s take a look at what we know.

First, the lens specs:

The Sony 12-24mm will feature a focal length range custom-made for landscape photographers. At 24mm, you’ll be poised to capture some wide images. And once you zoom out to 12mm, you’ll have wide-angle capabilities that few lenses can match, able to capture sweeping vistas that would normally be impossible to shoot.

A consistent problem with ultra-wide lenses is a bulbous front element, which makes it impossible to mount circular polarizers and neutral density filters. But Sony seems to have addressed this too, with the (rumored) inclusion of a rear-mounting filter option. That way, landscape photographers can take advantage of drop-in filters, and don’t have to choose between a wide focal length or enhanced image quality.

As for the optics:

Given the G Master designation, we can expect the lens to offer excellent sharpness from corner to corner, very limited chromatic aberration, and more.

In other words, the new Sony 12-24mm is a landscape photographer’s dream.

Note that Sony does already offer a 12-24mm lens, one that’s well-known for its optical prowess. But the current 12-24mm only shoots as wide as f/4, and while this is fine for most landscape situations, there’s one area of landscape photography where a wider maximum aperture is almost always better:

Astrophotography.

For photographers who shoot skies in complete darkness, an f/2.8 aperture allows for a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the stars without boosting ISO too much. The difference between f/2.8 and f/4 may not seem huge, but it does matter; at f/2.8, you’ll often come away with a sharp, clean shot, compared to the blurry or noisy result you get at f/4.

Of course, a lens that offers such impressive specifications is bound to come with a matching price tag. While Sony has not yet revealed any details, rumors suggest that the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM will cost around $ 4000 USD.

Is this pricier than I would like?

Absolutely.

But it’s bound to be one heck of a lens!

Canon and Sony Announce New DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras

Last week, we reported Canon 90D specs based on a leaked promo video.

And this week, we can talk about the Canon 90D with complete certainty, because it has now been announced alongside the (mirrorless) Canon M6 Mark II.

Canon EOS 90D

Canon and Sony Announce New DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras

The new Canon 90D will start shipping in September, so you still have a few weeks to decide whether it’s the right piece of kit for your needs. But the specs are looking pretty enticing. They include (but are not limited to):

  • A 32-megapixel APS-C sensor for large, high-quality photos
  • 11 frames per second continuous shooting for action and wildlife photography
  • 45 cross-type AF points and Dual Pixel autofocus
  • 100% viewfinder
  • Articulating touchscreen LCD

The continuous shooting speed capabilities are impressive. At 11 frames per second, you should be able to capture action scenes with ease, especially when paired with the 45 cross-type autofocus points.

The price isn’t bad, either, coming in at $ 1199 USD.

Here’s the bottom line:

You should keep your eye on the Canon 90D if you’re looking for a faster action camera but don’t want to pay for an ultra-high-end model.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II

Canon and Sony Announce New DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras

Around the same time that the 60D was announced, Canon also unveiled the Canon EOS M6 Mark II, which is a mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor, designed as a followup to the original EOS M6.

The EOS M6 Mark II is aimed at an enthusiast audience, costing just $ 850 USD and including no electronic viewfinder.

The rest of the specs are a nice list, as the EOS M6 Mark II features a 32.5-megapixel sensor, a tilting touchscreen, and 14 frames per second continuous shooting.

You’ll like the EOS M6 Mark II if you need a nice portable, walkaround camera.

Sony a6600 and a6100

Finally, Sony also made a big announcement:

Two new mirrorless cameras, the a6600 and the a6100.

Both cameras feature APS-C sensors, though the a6600 is marketed at more serious audiences. It packs 24 megapixels and in-body image stabilization, along with 11 fps continuous shooting and a high-quality electronic viewfinder. The Sony a6100 is also a 24-megapixel camera that shoots at 11 fps, but it lacks in-body image stabilization.

For all you photographers out there looking to upgrade, you’ve got some tough choices ahead of you!

Canon to Announce the 90D or the EOS M5 Mark II Next Month

August is bound to be an exciting month for Canon fans.

Rumors indicate that either the Canon 90D or the Canon EOS M5 Mark II will be announced next month, though it is also possible that we’ll get an announcement for both.

The Canon 90D would likely be the replacement for the Canon 80D, a mid-level Canon DSLR aimed at enthusiasts. The Canon EOS M5 Mark II, meanwhile, replaces the Canon EOS M5, an APS-C mirrorless camera.

The Canon 80D debuted back in February of 2016, and a lot has changed since then in the camera world. For one, the 80D lacks 4K video, and Canon fans expect to see this featured in a new 90D. Recent speculation suggests that the 90D may also be the first Canon DSLR to contain in-body image stabilization (IBIS).

Here are several rumored Canon 90D specifications:

  • A 31.2 (or a 32.5) megapixel APS-C sensor
  • 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting
  • 4K video
  • Dual card slots
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • An articulating 3.2-inch LCD
  • 45 autofocus points
  • $ 1399 USD price

Note the 30+ megapixel sensor, which will take Canon APS-C cameras to a new level. And the dual card slots point to this being a slightly higher-end body than the Canon 80D.

The Canon 90D may not be replacing only the Canon 80D, however. Canon 7D Mark II fans have long awaited a 7D Mark III, but may have to settle with a Canon 80D/Canon 7D Mark II replacement hybrid, which will combine both APS-C camera lines into one.

The Canon M5 Mark II, on the other hand, would be an upgraded APS-C mirrorless body. It’s rumored to have an electronic viewfinder like the Canon RP, and enhanced video capabilities, including 4K and high frame-rate slow motion.

Note that the Canon EOS M6, another Canon APS-C mirrorless body, may also see a replacement announced sometime late next month.

European officials expected to announce first image of black hole on April 10

European officials are expected to announce the first ever image of a black hole at a press event scheduled for 15:00 CEST on April 10. The conference will be held by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project, European Commission, and European Research Council, according to an announcement by the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO), and it will involve the presentation of ‘a groundbreaking result from the EHT.’

The Event Horizon Telescope project has been operating with the goal of capturing an image of a black hole. Until now, all videos and images of black holes are simulations based on what scientists know about them. As explained on the EHT website, the project involves radio dishes around the world that are linked together to form ‘a fundamentally new instrument’ for observing a black hole.

The EHT project has focused on Sagittarius A* (aka, SgrA*), the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and M87, the black hole at the center of the Virgo A galaxy. ESO’s press conference invite didn’t specify whether the EHT announcement will concern SgrA* or M87, however. Given EHT’s goal, it’s reasonable to guess that the team will unveil humanity’s first image of a black hole.

Xiaomi and Light announce partnership to push smartphone photography forward

It looks like Light, the maker of the L16 multi-lens camera, is really putting its money on the mobile sector. A few days ago the company announced it was partnering with Sony to use the Japanese chip maker’s image sensor in its multi-camera modules.

Shortly after, at the Mobile World Congress HMD Global launched its Nokia 9 PureView smartphone which uses Light’s technology in its main camera. Nokia phones won’t be the only smartphones to come with Light-engineered cameras, however. Now Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi and Light have announced that they’ll collaborate in developing smartphone cameras and computational photography technology as well.

The partnership is still brand new, so it will likely take some time before we see the first results in the shape of final products on store shelves. That said, it’s good to see Light is working with multiple manufacturers to market its innovative imaging technologies, which will likely accelerate market penetration and innovation of multi-lens cameras alike.

OPPO to announce 10x lossless smartphone zoom camera

At MWC 2017 Chinese smartphone maker OPPO showed a prototype device at its booth that featured a dual-camera setup with 5x optical zoom in a normally-sized smartphone body. The zoom lens design had been developed in cooperation with CorePhotonics and used a 90-degree angular prism to direct the light to a vertically positioned stabilized camera sensor.

The prototype never made it into a production series but now it seems OPPO is going to skip the 5x zoom entirely and make a direct jump to a device with a 10x zoom lens that is based on the same principles. The company is currently sending out media invites for the presentation of a 10x lossless zoom solution in Beijing, China, on January 16.

According to Chinese sources it is not clear if OPPO will present a production device or yet another prototype. In any case it looks like we’ll see zoom factors on smartphone cameras grow rapidly in the near future.

Leaked: Tokina to announce Opera 50mm F1.4 FF and FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF lenses

It seems Tokina is preparing to release two new lenses at CP+, and thanks to some last-minute photo and spec leaks courtesy of Nokishita, we get a peek ahead of schedule. The leaked lenses are the Opera 50mm F1.4 FF for Canon EF and Nikon F mount, and the FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF for Sony E-Mount.

According to the leaked specs, the Tokina Opera 50mm F1.4 FF will be dust and weather resistant and features an ultrasonic motor, a focus ring that rotates the same direction as that of a genuine Canon or Nikon lens, and an electromagnetic iris system for Nikon shooters (a first for Tokina).

No pricing info has been leaked, but the Opera 50mm F1.4 FF is allegedly scheduled for announcement on February 28th, and will ship in September of 2018.

Tokina FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF

Meanwhile, the new Tokina FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF will replace the FíRIN 20mm F2 FE MF lens released in September of 2016, and judging by the name alone, you can bet the new lens will add autofocus capability to its 1.5-year-old manual focus predecessor.

Leaked specs indicate this lens will be largely unchanged from the 2016 version otherwise. Identical specs include: 13 lens elements in 11 groups, 62mm filter thread, minimum focus of 0.28m, and a 9-blade aperture. Somehow they’ve managed to trim the weight down from 490g to 464g, but we’ll have to wait for official specs to confirm that (and our assumption about the addition of autofocus).

We don’t have any pricing info on this one either, but the new FíRIN 20mm F2 will allegedly be announced officially within 24 hours, and ships at the end of April.

Leak: Samyang to announce autofocus 14mm F2.8 lens for Canon EF mount

Nokishita has gotten their hands on two lens photos that have Canon users buzzing this morning. Just days after Yongnuo announced its (probably very cheap) YN 14mm F2.8 for Canon, Samyang/Rokinon are reportedly preparing to do you one better by releasing its own AF 14mm F2.8 for EF mount.

We have no details about the lens beyond the photos above, but if (or more likely when) this lens is announced, it will be the first Samyang autofocus lens for Canon’s EF mount—so far, all of the Samyang/Rokinon AF lenses released have been made for Sony’s FE mount.

Nokishita typically releases leaked image like the ones above only a day or two (if not hours) before the official announcement, so stay tuned for more.
