Part one: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 / Sony Alpha 7S Comparative Review

Though they come with vastly different sensor sizes and price tags, the Panasonic Lumix GH4 and the Sony Alpha 7S are similar in spirit. They’re both meant for video recording as much as they are for stills. To that point, the 12.2MP full frame A7S and 16MP Micro Four Thirds GH4 are both capable of 4K video output and offer extensive video features. Sony Alpha 7S added to test scene comparison tool

Sony announces pricing and availability for Alpha 7S

Sony has announced pricing and availability information for its Alpha 7S 12MP mirrorless camera. The Alpha 7S is the first full-frame camera able to read out its entire sensor fast enough to output 4K 30p footage without the need for line skipping or pixel binning. It’s also not constrained by the AVCHD standard with bitrates of up to 50Mbps. The body will be available in July and sell for $ 2,499.99. Learn more

Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 is an ultra-fast prime for Sony Alpha 7

The Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 is an ultra-fast prime for Sony E mount cameras, with manual focus and a clickless manual aperture mechanism. It offers full frame coverage, meaning it will work on the Alpha 7, 7R and 7S triplets, opening up intriguing low light options on the latter in particular. It will also work on APS-C E-mount models, offering a 75mm equivalent short telephoto angle of view. The lens is made in China by Shenyang Optical Electronics Ltd, and is available for pre-order now for $ 799. Learn more

A first look at the Sony Alpha 7S 12MP full frame with 4K output

Sony has just announced a 12MP full frame addition to its Alpha 7 series, designed to output 4K footage over HDMI. We’ve just got back from Sony’s press conference at the NAB show in Las Vegas, where we got a chance to see the camera. We hope to get more hands-on in the coming days, but for now, here’s some more details of the Sony Alpha 7S.

Sony announces Alpha 7S full frame mirrorless with 4:2:2 4k video output

Sony has announced the Alpha 7S, a 12MP full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both stills and video. The camera can read out its entire sensor fast enough to output 8-bit 4:2:2 4k video over HDMI at up to 30p, without line skipping or pixel binning. This also promises higher quality for the 1080p video (at up to 60p) it can record internally. Unlike the a7 and a7R, the latest model is not constrained by the AVCHD standard, also offering the XAVC S system, with bitrates of up to 50Mbps. Details are still being announced: more to follow.

Firmware roundup: Updates for the Alpha 7/7R, Nikon D4, Canon EOS 6D

This week camera manufacturers released a number of new firmware versions. Today Sony released the previously announced Sony Alpha 7/7R update that promises faster start-up speeds, improved image quality and better AF support. There are also updates for a host of other Sony NEX cameras. Meanwhile, Nikon and Canon released updates to the D4 and EOS 6D, respectively. Learn more

Sony plans March firmware update for Alpha 7 and 7R

Sony has announced an upcoming firmware update for its Alpha 7 and 7R full-frame mirrorless cameras. Due on March 19th, the update promises faster startup speeds, improved image quality (in what respect is not clear), a pair of new downloadable apps, and ‘smoother’ transitions in time-lapse mode. The firmware will also add support for Fast AF (Hybrid in the case of the A7) and the focus hold buttons on the 70-200 F4 FE lens.
