Spectre is an AI-powered long-exposure app for the iPhone

02 Mar

The team behind the popular Halide app has has launched its second app. Spectre uses computational imaging methods to simulate long-exposure photography on conventional cameras.

You can use the app to make moving subjects disappear in busy areas, such as the cars on the bridge below, or you can create light painting and other effects through subject motion, just like when shooting with a DSLR that has been set to a long shutter speed.

However, Spectre works in a different way, doing away with many of the limitations of a conventional long-exposure. There is no need to put the phone on a tripod or take a series of test exposures to find the shutter speed that works best.

Instead, the app uses machine learning and computer vision to create a computational shutter. Spectre doesn’t capture a single frame at a long exposure but takes hundreds of frames during the exposure time and merges them. This means you not only get a still image as a final result but also a video.

Results are saved in Apple’s Live Photos format which lets you make adjustments after capture, such as choosing a key frame or applying Live Photo effects.

The app uses scene recognition for optimized results. For example, frames captured of a beach scene might be merged for a smooth appearance of the water. A busy cityscape at night is processed for a pleasant rendering of light trails. Thanks to AI-powered image stabilization handheld long exposures of up to nine seconds are possible and during capture a stability indicator tells you if your hands are too shaky.

If you’d like to try long-exposure photography with the iPhone and Spectre, you can download the app on the App Store now for an introductory price of $ 1.99.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 includes all-new features and technologies along with a streamlined workflow that is elegant, powerful and easy to learn. Notable new features include a new non-destructive workflow for layers, auto-alignment of layers, focus stacking, a new portrait tab, a new text tool, new digital asset management updates and more. ON1 Photo RAW 2019 includes the tools photographers need in a single well thought out photography workflow application.

This all-new photo editing experience gives photographers the features they use the most from the Adobe® Lightroom® and Photoshop® worlds in a single application. ON1 Photo RAW 2019 also includes a significant enhancement to the migration process for customers looking to move away from Lightroom®. Version 2019 is the first solution to utilize AI-powered algorithms to transfer and display Lightroom edited photos in ON1 Photo RAW 2019. The transferred settings will also remain non-destructive and be re-editable inside ON1 Photo RAW 2019.

The ON1 community drives the development of ON1 Photo RAW based on what’s most important for their photo editing needs. Every new feature and improvement made in version 2019 is a direct result of community input through the ON1 Photo RAW Project.

  • A New & Faster Editing Workflow ??–? ??All of the editing modules from previous versions have been combined into the Edit module to create a single place for editing photos. The former editing modules are now available as tabs to allow you to work in each seamlessly without changing the application appearance. These include Develop, Effects, Portrait, and Local Adjustments tabs.
  • A New Workflow for Layers?? – ON1 Layers is no longer a separate module. Instead, the power of layers is accessible within the non-destructive workflow in the new Edit module. This allows for creating or editing multi-layered files, including raw files, and keeping non-destructive settings for each photo layer. Customers can also move, size and mask each layer. More importantly, and a new concept, each layer has its own non-destructive settings, all the way back to the original file. What’s most exciting is if you are working with raw files, powerful adjustments like exposure, highlights and shadows can now be processed using the raw data in a layered photo workflow. All without having to change modules or applications.
  • New Lightroom Photo Settings Migration?? – New AI-powered algorithms give customers the ability to transfer Lightroom edited photos, keep the non-destructive settings, and move them into ON1 Photo RAW 2019. The updated Lightroom Migration Tool in version 2019 transfers almost every edit you can make in Lightroom including raw processing, crop, retouching and local adjustments along with folders, photos, collections, and metadata.
  • New Focus Stacking?? – Automatically blend a series of photos at different focus distances to increase depth-of-field. It’s so fast, you can adjust the focus in real-time, just like changing the focus on your lenses. Think of it like HDR, but for focus instead of exposure.
  • New Auto-Align Layers?? – Easily combine multiple photos as layers, then automatically align them based on image content, making it easy to mask and blend them together.
  • New AI Masking Tool (coming Winter 2019)?? – This new tool, powered by machine learning, will allow customers to easily identify areas of their photos to create a selection or mask and the AI technology detects your subject matter and automatically creates a beautiful mask.
  • New Portrait Tab ??– The new Portrait tab automatically detects faces in your photo allowing you to easily retouch, smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes, and whiten teeth.
  • New Text Tool?? – The new text tool is perfect for creating posters, postcards, or adding your byline or watermark. Easily control font size, color, position, and more and then save a preset to add the same text overlay to a batch of photos quickly.
  • New Master Keyword List?? – Now you can see every keyword you use in a single, searchable list. You can quickly apply, clear, edit, or delete keywords.
  • Enhanced Local Adjustments?? – Local adjustments have been enhanced to use the raw processing data. This allows for more highlight and shadow details with more tonal range. This also includes new controls like haze, whites and blacks.
  • New Layered HDR Workflow?? – With the powerful new non-destructive layers you can combine other photos, text or alternate exposures with your HDR photos. Use the powerful masking tools to combine multiple HDR renditions even.
  • New Filter Options in Effects ??–? ??We have added dedicated film grain, curves and color adjustment filters to Effects. These let you add film grain to color photos and make advanced, targeted color and tone adjustments faster. There’s even a new filter selector that allows you to search for filters, learn what they do and even view a sample before you add them.
  • New User Interface?? – The new user interface has a fresh and modern feel. Overall contrast has been reduced to make photos stand out along with a new font to help increase readability. Updated icons, tabs, and sliders will also take up less visual space.
  • Other Updates ??– including support for HEIC files, keyboard shortcuts for changing modules, more accent color options, color labels on folders and more.
  • Additional Camera Support?? – Added support for the Fujifilm XF10, Fujifilm X-T3, Nikon P1000, Nikon Z7, Panasonic LX100 II, Leica M10-P.

Pixelmator Photo AI-powered image editing app for iPad will launch this year

02 Nov

Pixelmator has announced plans to release an image editing app called Pixelmator Photo for the Apple iPad. The new app utilizes Apple’s Core ML machine learning technology to power multiple features including ML Fix, an algorithm trained using 20 million professional images.

Pixelmator Photo is an AI-powered app offering non-destructive image editing with desktop-class adjustments on the iPad. The software features ML Fix, ML Crop, and ML Presets, all features that utilize machine learning to enhance images. Microsoft introduces AI-powered audio and video transcription for OneDrive

30 Aug

Managing media files, especially when sharing them across a group of people is not always an easy task. This is especially true for video files. Today Microsoft has launched a new AI-powered media search function for OneDrive that should help simplify things.

The new feature is capable of transcribing audio and video files and displaying timestamped quotes alongside the media viewer, which is compatible with 320 file types. The new feature is an addition to Microsoft’s already available AI-powered photo screening system that can detect location, objects and text in image files.

As an end result all media files become fully searchable. For example, you could search for a scanned receipt by typing one of the items listed on it, or use a piece of dialogue or voiceover to search in video or audio files.

The new feature is designed to facilitate collaboration across larger groups but could certainly also provide benefits for photographers and especially videographers with large archives. The automated transcription services will be natively available for video and audio files in OneDrive later this year.

Microsoft launches AI-powered Bing Visual Search

23 Jun

Microsoft today announced a new AI-powered Visual Search function for its Bing search engine that will pretty much directly compete with Google Lens. Visual Search will let users search the web and shop online through pictures they have taken or selected from their camera roll.

For example, you can find out more about a landmark or flower by capturing it through the Bing app or uploading it from your device memory. Visual Search will then identify the object in question and provide web links you can explore further.

In the same way, you can shop for fashion items or furniture. If you see an object you like, take or upload a photo of it and the system will reply with shopping options and pricing for similar-looking items.

The Bing team says Visual Search will be continuously improved and expanded but the current version is available today in the Bing app for iOS and Android as well as Microsoft Launcher and the Microsoft Edge browser for Android. It’ll also be soon available in Microsoft Edge for iOS and on Bing.com.

Xiaomi Mi 8 launches with tele-camera and AI-powered portrait mode

01 Jun

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi today announced its latest high-end smartphone, the Mi 8. The new model comes with very similar camera specifications to the Mi MIX 2S, featuring a wide/tele dual-camera setup.

The main camera uses a 1/2.55″ Sony IMX363 Sony sensor with a 1.4µm pixel size, F1.8 aperture lens and a 4-axis optical image stabilization system. The longer lens offers approximately a 2x zoom factor. The sensor comes with smaller 1.0µm pixels, and at F2.4 the aperture is not quite as fast as the main camera’s.

The camera uses PDAF to focus and a LED-flash helps illuminate your subjects in very low light. Artificial intelligence offers auto enhancement for more than 200 types of scenes and there is also an AI-enhanced portrait mode, similar to the iPhone X’s portrait lighting. The latter is also available on the 20MP / F2.0 front camera.

Images can be framed and viewed on a 6.21-inch Samsung AMOLED display with 18.7:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution and the device is powered by Qualcomm’s top-end chipset Snapdragon 845. For those relying on their phone’s GPS when out shooting images, it’s worth noting that the Mi 8 is also the first smartphone with Dual GPS, combining L1 and L5 frequencies. This should provide faster and more precise location services than most devices.

Pricing starts at CNY2,699 (approximately $ 420) for the 6/64 GB version and go all the way up to CNY3,299 (approximately $ 515) for the 6/256 GB model, which, compared to some direct competitors, represents pretty good value. The Mi 8 will be available online and offline from June 5th.

Trint’s AI-powered plug-in automatically creates captions for Premiere Pro CC

13 May

We’re a little late to this one, but it’s an interesting option for video editors that is worth sharing all the same. Last month, transcription company Trint launched a new Adobe Premiere Pro CC plug-in that uses artificial intelligence to automatically create captions in Adobe Premiere Pro. Called Trint for Premiere, the new plug-in allows Premiere Pro CC users to upload videos to Trint’s system directly from Adobe’s application. Trint’s speech-to-text tech then automatically transcribes the audio and generates captions.

According to Trint, its system creates a draft transcript that the user refines in the Trint Editor. These corrected transcriptions are made available in the plug-in’s panel, providing direct SRT access within Premiere. The software also supports Edit Decision Lists (EDLs), simplifying soundbite creation.

Trint’s new plug-in is available from Adobe Exchange with a free trial. After the trial period ends, users have the option of paying a fee per-hour of transcribed video, or signing up for a monthly subscription. The free trial signup and more information is available on Trint’s website.

Press Release

Trint’s AI transcription software to add integrated panel for Adobe Premiere Pro CC in Enterprise Offering

London (April 4, 2018) – Customers of Adobe® Premiere® Pro CC, part of the Adobe Creative Cloud®, will now have the opportunity to make their workflow even more seamless using Trint’s automatic speech-to-text technologies.

Trint for Premiere, Trint’s new panel for Adobe Premiere Pro CC enables direct upload of footage to Trint for fast automated transcription. This gives users a quick and integrated flow for making audio searchable and for creating captions for their media. Using Trint’s automated speech-to-text technologies, editors quickly get a machine-generated draft transcript that they can easily polish to perfect in the Trint Editor. Transcriptions corrected in Trint will be available in the panel, giving editors direct access to SRTs from within Premiere Pro CC.

Highlighted selections of Trint transcripts will be available as EDLs, making it fast and simple to find key soundbites and the editing process much quicker for users. EDLs for videos can be exported from the panel and can be seamlessly used in the Timeline.

“Our customers have been asking us for an Adobe Premiere Pro CC integration for some time,” says Jeff Kofman, CEO of Trint. “We know that many of our users are video editors, and it’s exciting to be able to streamline their captioning and editing workflows.”

Building on its strong transcription toolkit, the company is also releasing additional enterprise features which will make it the leading transcription service for organizations.

Trint has also released the new Trint mobile iOS app that lets users record interviews and meetings on their iPhone and upload them to Trint for fast transcription and collaboration from anywhere.

Google Photos gets AI-powered suggested photo edits and colorization feature

09 May

At its I/O developer conference, Google has announced a bunch of improvements to its Photos app and, as you would expect, most of them are powered by artificial intelligence. AI algorithms have helped Google Photos users find and rate images for some time, but now the new Suggested Actions feature uses the power of AI to analyze images and suggest smart edits that would improve the shot, or prompt you to share it with the right people.

For example, if the AI recognizes people in the image, Google Photos will suggest sending it to that person; in the case of underexposure, it will suggest cranking up the brightness; and if the horizon is crooked, it’ll suggest rotating the shot. Also useful (but less photo-centric) if the algorithms detect that you have taken a photo of a document, it will suggest converting it to pdf.

All suggested actions can be confirmed and executed with a single tap.

In addition, Google Photos will receive some colorization tools. For example, a person in an image can be accentuated by desaturating the background and slightly increasing saturation on the subject. There’ll also be a new function to automatically colorize old black-and-white images.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the new features will roll out in the next couple of months, so keep an eye on DPReview and we’ll let you know when it’s time to update your Google Photos app.

This AI-powered chatbot scores your Instagram photos on color, emotion, and more

28 Apr

Do you ever wonder just how ‘Instagram-worthy’ your latest photo is? If so, you might want to check out this chatbot. The team at BBC Tomorrow’s World have built a chatbot that uses artificial intelligence to tell you just how much potential your photo has in terms of attracting likes and comments.

The free Messenger is available for Facebook Messenger and ties directly into your Instagram account. After you’ve granted it permission to access your Instagram content, it’ll ask you to upload the next photo you plan on posting. Once it’s been uploaded, the Tomorrow’s World chatbot will take roughly five to ten minutes to analyze the image, taking into account the colors, composition, and even landmarks that may be in the image.

As it crunches the pixels—which can take upwards of fifteen minutes—the chatbot provides little nuggets of information on how you can make the most of Instagram. For example, it let us know that blue is a popular color on Instagram, due to its ability to ‘evoke feelings of serenity and calmness.’ It also informed us that ‘breakfast’ is the most popular hashtag on Instagram… which was news to us.

Once your image analysis is complete, you’ll get a notification and be shown a video that breaks down multiple components of your photos, scoring each section along the way. It grades the image based on color, the emotions the bot believes the snap will evoke, any landmarks that might be in the image, features within the image, and your Instagram following as a whole.

To test the chatbot, we used an image from the Lamborghini Huracan camera car article yesterday. It scored a +94. Not bad considering it received zeroes in emotions and landmarks.

Would we replace the judgement of our own two eyes with this chatbot to curate our Instagram feed? No chance. But it’s still fun to take it for a spin and see what the BBC’s ‘artificial intelligence algorithm’ thinks of various images we throw at it.

To take the BBC Tomorrow’s World for a spin, head on over to the chatbot’s page and get it installed.
