  • 30 years after rollout, take a tour of space shuttle Discovery’s flightdeck

    Space shuttle Discovery was rolled out from the factory thirty years ago this month, and in an operational career spanning 39 missions, she spent 365 days in space and travelled almost 150 million miles. Discovery can currently be found on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Virginia but if you’re curious about what it looks like inside, click through for a 360-degree interactive panorama of the flight-deck of the most travelled shuttle ever to fly.

  • Before and After: Weekly Photography Challenge

    This week your challenge is to take and/or process an image on the theme of ‘Before and After‘.

    This idea was submitted by a number of readers on our Facebook page recently and lends itself to you showcasing your post processing skills – but you’re welcome to take a different approach if you’d like and just photograph a ‘before and after’ of some other kind.

    It is totally up to you – get your imagination into gear and have some fun with this challenge!

    Once you’ve taken your ‘Before and After’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

    If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBEFOREANDAFTER to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

    Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks YELLOW challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

  • Sun-Times photographer uses iPhone to document life after layoffs

    Rob Hart was amongst the 28 members of the Chicago Sun-Times photography staff laid off last week. He’s been pointedly documenting his experience via Tumblr ever since, deliberately opting to use his iPhone over his Nikon D3 because, as he says of himself in his blog, he was “replaced with a reporter with an iPhone, so he is documenting his new life with an iPhone, but with the eye of a photojournalist trained in storytelling.” We spoke to him about it for connect.dpreview.com.

  • After layoffs, Sun-Times expects reporters to become mobile photographers

    It seems the Chicago Sun-Times is counting on its remaining employees to become mobile photographers. After laying off its entire 28-person photography staff yesterday, the newspaper has announced mandatory training for remaining employees on ‘iPhone photography basics’. That’s according to media writer Robert Feder. Feder quotes a memo from managing editor Craig Newman: ‘In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need’.   • Lost camera reunited with owner after six years drifting in the ocean

    A photographer has been reunited with her Canon PowerShot camera, six years after losing it in the ocean off Hawaii. The camera, which was in a waterproof housing, drifted for thousands of miles to the coast of Taiwan, where it was picked up by an employee of China Airlines. The airline identified its owner, Lindsay Scallan of Georgia, USA from photos on the memory card. Click through for pictures and more details (Hawaii News Now via Petapixel)

  • First Instagrams out of North Korea after opening of 3G network

    Last week North Korea started to allow foreigners to use a 3G mobile network from inside its borders. This means that tourists and visiting professionals alike can now tweet and upload instagrams from Pyongyang. However, access to mobile networks is still limited for locals. Two of the most notable Instagrammers in North Korea are Associated Press journalists Jean Lee and David Guttenfelder. Since the change, the journalists have used their accounts to present life inside North Korea. Click through to see their images.
