Getting Aerial: Mark di Suvero at Crissy Field

16 Sep

I’ve been tinkering with aerial photography and videography since NAB in April. Unfortunately where I live the wind can make the experience risky. Still this past weekend I decided to brave the America’s cup crowds at Crissy Field and get an alternate view of the Mark di Suvero sculpture exhibit. I look forward to getting a little more air time the next time the winds die down.

Clear Skies Ahead: Quest for a Complete Global Aerial Atlas

13 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

altas generation stack algorithm

If you have ever zoomed out in Google Maps (or Mapquest, Yahoo or Bing), you may have been surprised find your field of view relatively unclouded by inclement weather patterns, yet marred by strange and inconsistent seasons. Instead of a continuous satellite view, you see an apparent patchwork quilt of misfit images, incoherently stitched together.

atlas global clouded default

MapBox (which powers FourSquare among other services) is on a mission to make satellite images not only more beautiful but also more consistent and comprehensible. Their task begins with eliminating blurry landscapes, strange seams and the surreal endless summer you see on other aerial images of the globe, but the potential scope of the project goes far beyond that as well.

atlas stacked pixel maps

Talking to Wired, Charlie Loyd describes how the company is sifting through data from Terra and Aqua, two orbiting NASA satellites, to solve this problem pixel by pixel: “For the new release we’re processing two years of imagery, captured from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2012. This amounts to over 339,000 16-megapixel+ satellite images, totaling more than 5,687,476,224,000 pixels. We boil these down to a mere 5 billion or so.”

atlas consistent cloud free

The industry paradigm is to combine parts of images representing the clearest available shots, but the result can create a clash of color from various seasons. Simply overlapping all of the different possibilities creates a mess of indistinct brown, which is not terribly attractive or useful either. Thus a middle road was found: stacking the images, sorting them by cloudiness, selecting pixels from each picture and filtering around peak growth periods. The result is a consistent yet naturally texture-rich whole both synthetic in composition yet ultimately organic in origin at the same time.

atlas mapbox future potential

The goal for now is to create a single seamless atlas that wraps the world, accurately (but with an eye towards aesthetics) reflecting what the planet actually looks like from above while also being useful in real-life mapping. Future potential iterations, however, could evolve beyond just looking and working best in traditional contexts: “If you do a web search for, say, infrared remote sensing, you’ll get an idea of the richness of possibilities, and you can start to imagine the cross-cutting inquiries that these large, open archives of multi-spectral satellite data enable,” writes Loyd. “Glaciers, wildfires, crops, droughts and floods, cities and forests, surface temperature, plankton blooms, seasonal dynamics, even smog –- it’s all there. It just needs a little work to see clearly.”

Kite Cameras: Aerial Photography Accessible to Anyone

25 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

aerial crop circle capture

Towers convey power, and height is both literally and metaphorically connected to broader and better views – but here come kites to undermine that top-down view.

aerial kite island photos

Kite photography is empowering and democratizing – increasingly inexpensive unmanned aircraft can be attached to likewise ever-cheaper, high-quality photographic devices. Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) enthusiasts like Pierre Lesage, a sampling of whose work appears here, are rapidly taking to these newer and better technologies.

Sending your camera into the sky is one thing – keeping it balanced so it takes a clean and crisp shot is quite another. Many of the latest advances thus appropriately address the issue of stability. Hence, stabilization rigs that help keep balance even with an ever-moving kite and ground controller.

The controller, in turn, has to determine how the photos-taking will unfold, via preset intervals, perhaps, or using infrared or radio controls. Of his setup, the photographer writes: “Originally this rig was made for a Canon Ixus 600, was then adapted with a video return and later adapted to welcome A Leica Dlux3.”

Until recently, taking photos from the sky meant owning (or at least renting) an airborne vehicle to carry you and your equipment aloft, then struggling through windows or other opening to take the best shot. Now, the game has changed, and almost anyone can get in on the action. Now the only thing that may get in your way is the thin kite string everything else hinges on.

22 May, 2013 – Medium Format Aerial Photography

22 May

As I prepare to head of for Australia in just a few days to teach a PODAS workshop aboard ship on the northwest coast it seems appropriate that I publish a new article by an excellent Australian photographer, Nick Rains.

It is titled Medium Format Aerial Photography and describes his use of a Leica S2 for this work. It should be mentioned that if you find yourself in Solms, Germany during the next month, Nick has an exhibit of his aerial work at the Leica Factory Gallery.

If you’re in Sydney next week, and would like to say "Hi", you might want to visit the L&P Digital IQ2 World Tour event on Wednesday, May 29. Art Wolfe, Thomas Knoll, Kevin Raber, Peter Eastway, Tony Hewett, Alexia Sinclair, myself and other well known photographers will be there speaking as well as engaging in Q&A sessions.

ZERO wind AutoKAP in Auyuituiq Park, Bafin Island

Aerial Photography is something that many people would love to be able to do but find is out of their budget. One more affordable way to go about it is to try some Kite Aerial Photography (KAP).

Hey batta batta!

The 61 images in this post are all arial shots taken by strapping a camera to a kite to elevate it. It’s not something for the faint of heart as you are putting your camera at risk but the results can be pretty amazing in the right setting.

Getting up high with your camera attached to a kite gives a fresh perspective on a scene and can highlight patterns, textures and shadows that might not be evident to anyone at ground level.

Don’t just duct tape your camera to your kite though – most serious kite aerial photographers use purpose built rigging to get their shots like these:

There’s a heap of information on KAP online – Google it and you’ll be sure to find some great advice. Now back to some great Kite Aerial Photography images – Enjoy!

RC Helicopter Aerial Photography by Flying Camera Systems

18 Nov

www.flyingcamerasystems.com The Flying Camera Systems RC helicopter is perfect for shooting professional quality aerial digital photographs… photo’s with altitude! Flying Camera Systems offers high quality aerial photographic images that would be considered too difficult or too costly to obtain from a full-sized aircraft. Get stunning photographs from normally impractical locations, showcase your event, business, premises or structure in a unique and powerful way using aerial still imagery or video. Introducing Flying Camera Systems After years of development, Flying Camera Systems can now offer clients ranging from private homeowners through to multi-national companies an easy, cost effective, and low pollution solution to aerial photography. The service Flying Camera Systems provide is of particular value in areas near major civilian or military airports where full sized aircraft have severe flight restrictions imposed on them. It is also useful when the costs of using full sized aircraft would be prohibitively expensive. The company uses high quality miniature helicopters; each with a purpose-built mount designed to take a camera (video or photographic), and a video downlink. The system is not subject to the same restrictions that full size aircraft have imposed on them, and can be used in relatively confined areas which open up a new realm of possibilities for aerial photography. The flight team comprises of an experienced pilot with the necessary skills for precise

Flips, rolls, cars, boats, ducks, roos and a Cessna. This and more, captured with two onboard video cameras. I used my Trex 500 helicopter with a flycamone2 mounted to the tail and a sony cybershot digital camera mounted to the skids (using pool noodle foam). This video was NOT done using FPV equipment and is arguably the worlds best non-FPV rc heli aerial video; see comments from “muni86”. The locations are Warrandyte, Wonga Park, Rosebud, Sugarloaf Reservior, Torquay, Melbourne (Alexandra Gardens) and Williamstown (Victoria, Australia). The sound track is “asleep from day” by The Chemical Brothers with Mazzy Star vocals. SUBSCRIBE and RATE if you like my stuff!
