Sigma updates MC-11 Sony adapter, adds support for 24-70mm Art lens and more

Sigma continues to add compatibility to its MC-11 adapter, allowing more Sigma SA and EOS mount Sigma lenses to be used on Sony E-mount cameras. And the latest round of updates adds compatibility with one of Sigma’s most anticipated and exciting Art lenses.

The MC-11 comes in two variations—the MC-11 SA-E for Sigma-mount lenses, and the MC-11 EF-E for Canon mount lenses. The new firmware makes the converters compatible with Sigma’s new 14mm f/1.8 HD HSM | Art and the long-awaited 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM | Art lenses. The MC-11 EF-E also becomes compatible with Sigma’s Cine Lens 14mm T2 FF and 135mm T2 FF in the Canon EF mount.

The company has also released new firmware for its 100-400mm f/5-6.3 FG OS HSM | Contemporary telephoto zoom lens. The update improves AF speed in all cases, but it also improves functionality when mounted via MC-11 SA-E adapter. According to Sigma, focusing features are enhanced in the adapter-mounted lens, and the optical stabilization system becomes operational more quickly.

All firmware can be downloaded for free from Sigma’s download page, or through the Sigma USB dock. To update the MC-11 mount converter, simply plug it in to your PC and run the SIGMA Optimization Pro app.

DIYer adds giant heat sink to overheating Lumix GF7 camera

One industrious Lumix GF7 owner named Eric Strebel has solved his camera’s overheating issue with a pretty intense DIY hack. Namely, he added a massive heat sink to the back of the camera…. problem solved.

The entire hacking process is detailed in a video that Strebel uploaded to YouTube, where he explains that his camera would, at times, warn him to let it cool down due to overheating while shooting video. The heat sink, which is attached to the camera using piano wire, is very effective at keeping the camera cool for long recording sessions.

The GF7 features a hinged display that can be flipped up, leaving the back of the camera flat and exposed. It is on that portion of the camera that Strebel mounted the heat sink, which he harvested from an old PC. A drill press was used to machine the heat sink to size, while piano wire was bent and utilized as a removable attachment point for mounting the heat sink onto the camera.

The entire project, explains Strebel, took about 4 hours to complete.

Silkypix adds clarity tool and compatibility with Sigma dp Quattro series

Ichikawa soft laboratory has included compatibility with the X3F Raw file format of the Sigma dp Quattro series of cameras in the latest version of its Silkypix software application. Developer Studio 8 allows owners of the dp 1, dp 2 and dp 3 Quattro cameras to process the Raw files produced by their unique Foveon sensors.

The version 8 of the application also adds a clarity slider tool for the first time, as well as an updated control slider for noise reduction. Those who like hard copies of their images will be able to take advantage of a new soft-proofing function that displays pictures as they will be printed, and some general improvements to the user interface are said to make using the program more straight forward for everyone. Focus peaking is another new feature, and now a single license permits the software to be activated on up to three computers.

The application costs 16200 Japanese Yen (approx. $ 150) for new purchasers but those with existing licenses from software bundled with cameras can upgrade for a smaller fee.

Eyebombing Bulgaria: Artist Adds Googly Eyes to Bollards, Bins & Pipes

As public art interventions go, googly-eye additions to urban objects and surfaces are pretty simple to implement, effectively animating their surroundings without too much work (or risk of being caught).

Humans are naturally wired to read faces into ordinary things, but an extra cue or too by someone like Vanyu Krastev solidifies the effect, often with hilarious results.

Cracked bollards become crooked Pac Man-esque creatures and gaping water pipes seem to scream while doors and garbage cans gain strange sentience. The emotive range of these inanimate objects is quite impressive, considering it’s entirely in the eye of the viewer (and the two eyes placed on a given thing).

Eyebombing is nothing new (at least as old as the internet and probably as old as ‘googly eyes’ themselves), but always a fun way to lighten someone’s day as they pass by on the street. It’s also a form of expression anyone can engage in — very little skill or cash required.

It is “different from traditional types of street art like tagging, sticking, stencils” according to Eyebombing.com because “the above forms are largely driven by egocentric behaviour, like getting seen, respect and maybe a hope to get famous, often using vandalism as modus operandi.”

Nikon adds to fast prime series with AF-S Nikkor 28mm F1.4E ED

Nikon has added a sixth lens to its collection of fast F1.4 primes (the others being 24mm, 35mm, 58mm, 85mm and 105mm). The AF-S Nikkor 28mm F1.4E ED lens features nine rounded aperture blades, two ED and three aspherical elements, and Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coating. The lens is made of magnesium alloy and is sealed against dust and moisture.

As you might imagine, this is a pricey lens – it’ll go on sale in late June for $ 1999.95.

Think Tank Photo updates TurnStyle sling bags and adds wheels to StreetWalker series

Bag and accessories manufacturer Think Tank Photo has updated two of its ranges, adding more internal space and a rolling option to the StreetWalker series and a new waist strap to the TurnStyle sling-type bags.

All three of the existing StreetWalker backpacks have been enlarged to create more depth in the interior compartments so they can carry more kit, and particularly large bodies with wide-ranging zoom lenses still attached. The series also now features a version with wheels and a retractable handle in the StreetWalker Rolling Backpack V2.0, which can operate as a backpack or a rolling case.

The company has also revamped its Turnstyle series of sling bags, adding a new waist strap to hold the bag securely when the user is taking pictures. There are three sizes of bag, and each is now available in grey or blue.

Google Photos update encourages sharing, adds photo book creation

Google’s I/O conference today included some information about updates for the company’s photo organization app. Google Photos will use machine learning to analyze who’s in your photos and automatically suggest photos to share. Suggestions will appear in the sharing tab on the Photos apps for Android, iOS and web ‘in the coming weeks.’ You’ll also be able to set up shared libraries to automatically send photos to designated people – with the ability to share everything, or just photos of certain people, for example.

Google also announced it will allow you to create photo books from your Photos library, streamlined by a largely automated photo selection process. They’ll be available to US users only at launch, and will start at $ 10 for a softcover book and $ 20 for hardcover.

Dirty Car & Truck Art: Moscow Street Artist Adds Critters to Filthy Vehicles

Massive deep sea monsters, jungle predators and swamp creatures lurk in the grimey shadows on the backs of trucks, thanks to interventions by illustrator Nikita Golubev. Most of the featured critters are of the potentially creepy variety, including a deep-sea angler fish, octopus, shark, alligator, lion, owl and orangutan.

Based in Russia, the artist works on cars sometimes as well, but finds the broad doors and long sides on larger vehicles particularly inviting as blank canvasses for light-on-dark works of art.

As a subtractive strategy, there is less risk associated with these impermanent pieces as well — at worst, some truck driver may be less than amused to find their dirty vehicle highlighted in such a way.

Reverse graffiti is nothing new, but most artists who work in that vein operate at smaller scales, cleaning up sections of door and rear windows rather than tall trucks. Naturally, these pieces are all temporary, destined to come off in the wash or rinse out in the rain (but live on in photographs).

STC adds 6-stop neutral density to its clip-on sensor filter range

Specialist filter manufacturer STC Optical Ltd has expanded its range of Clip filters to include a ND64 with infrared-cut properties. The new filter, which clips directly in front of the camera’s sensor instead of over the front of the lens, provides 6 stops of light reduction while maintaining accurate colors by preventing infrared light from passing freely during the exposure.

The benefit of using filters over the sensor is that the same filter can be used whichever lens is fitted, so users don’t have to buy a separate size for each lens diameter, or a different adapter ring. These kinds of filters are especially useful when used with ultra-wide lenses as they present no danger of vignetting and they fit behind lenses that can’t accept conventional front-element screw-in filters.

With wide, as well as normal, lenses having the filter behind the lens avoids the problems of flare that adding glass in front of the lens can create. It also side-steps the problem of  reflections on the back-side of the filter that can be a danger during long exposures when using filter holders that don’t hold the filter flat against the front of the lens.

Using this sort of ND filter will potentially be of benefit not only for creating long-exposure still images but also for video work. And of course with the filter remaining in place in the camera, changing lenses will take less time as there’s no need to screw off and reattached the filter.

Since the filter prevents DSLR mirrors returning to their normal position, it must be attached in live view mode. STC claims that it is perfectly safe to leave the filter in place even with the camera powered off, since the filter is designed to support the mirror, and prevent it from dropping.

Nikon fixes bugs and adds compatibility for WT-7 Wi-Fi transmitter

Nikon has issued new firmware for its D810, D810A, D750, D7200 and D500 DSLR cameras that fixes a number of issues and which will allow those that can’t already to operate with the company’s WT-7 wireless transmitter. The transmitter itself also has new firmware to accommodate the added models, and to improve the reliability of its connection with SnapBridge on iOS 10.2 devices.

As well as equipping the D810, D810A, D750 and D7200 for life with the WT-7 the firmware attends to a number of bugs in the cameras, as marked below.

D500

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.

D810

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • Multiple exposures were not recorded correctly.
  • Incorrect histograms would be displayed for some images viewed in the RGB histogram display during playback.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for JPEG/TIFF recording > Image size.
  • Photos taken immediately after lenses were exchanged would not be recorded at the correct exposure.
  • The protect icon did not display correctly.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, the camera would stop responding when the user attempted to take pictures with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality, Small selected for NEF (RAW) recording > Image size, and RAW primary – JPEG secondary selected for Secondary slot function.
  • Shutter speeds for the electronic front-curtain shutter would sometimes be faster than 1/2000 s.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.

D750

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • Incorrect histograms would be displayed for some images viewed in the RGB histogram display during playback.
  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for Image size.
  • The option chosen for Custom Setting f5 (Customize command dials) > Change main/sub in CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU group f (Controls) would not be saved when Save settings was selected for Save/load settings in the SETUP MENU.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.

D7200

  • The WT-7 wireless transmitter is now supported.

Fixed the following issues:

  • If On was selected for Auto distortion control, distortion would appear at the edges of photos taken with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine selected for Image quality and Medium selected for Image size.
  • Pictures would sometimes not be recorded.
  • Optimal exposure would sometimes not be achieved in photos taken in live view using a lens with electromagnetically controlled aperture (type E and PC-E lenses).
  • WT-7
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.
