Tiffen launches Steadicam Steadimate-S vest adapter for single handled gimbals

02 Apr

Tiffen has introduced a device aimed at owners of single handled gimbals like the DJI Ronin-S that allows them to connect their device to a Steadicam vest and arm to add extra stability. The Steadicam Steadimate-S is said to make holding single handle gimbals much easier too, so operators will be able to use them for longer without tiring.

Tiffen already markets the Steadicam Steadimate, which is designed for dual handled gimbals such as the DJI Ronin, and this new model works on the same principles but for single handled devices. The Steadimate-S consists of a bracket and a pair of counter weights. The bracket attaches the gimbal to the arm of the Steadicam vest and the weights ensure the gimbal remains upright. The gimbal then becomes part of the vest and benefits from the z-axis stabilization of the Steadicam arm as well as the x/y-axis stabilization of the gimbal’s own gyro head. The company says this arrangement helps to eliminate the ‘bounce’ often seen in footage shot with single handed gimbals in walking shots.

Users have a choice of two kits to suit the weight of their set-up. The Steadicam Steadimate-S 15 System comes with the A-15 Steadicam Arm and Scout Vest and can be used with up to 6.8kg / 15lbs of kit, while those with camera/gimbal combinations that weigh up to 13.6kg / 30lbs will need the Steadimate-S 30 System that uses the A-30 Arm and Zephyr Vest. The Steadimate-S will also be available on its own for those who already have a vest and arm.

No prices have been released yet, but the existing Steadicam Steadimate for twin handled gimbals costs from just under $ 1700 with a vest and arm, or $ 500 on its own. For more information see the Tiffen website.

THE TIFFEN COMPANY DEMONSTRATES NEW STEADICAM STEADIMATE-S AT NAB 2019

Newest Camera Stabilizer Designed for Seamless Use with the DJI Ronin-S®

The Tiffen Company, the leading manufacturer of imaging accessories for the consumer/professional imaging and the motion picture and broadcast television industries, announces today the addition of the Steadimate-S to its Steadicam line of camera stabilizers.

Presented for the first time at NAB 2019, the Steadicam Steadimate-S offers camera operators increased freedom, endurance, and creative opportunity when working with single-handed motorized stabilizers like the DJI Ronin-S®. By pairing a single-handed stabilizer with a body- worn stabilizer the DJI Ronin-S can be operated for hours with minimal physical fatigue while maintaining a wide range of vertical movement and adding full panning ability and “low-mode” operation.

Users can minimize or completely eliminate the bouncing image effect that often occurs when using single-handled stabilizers as the Steadimate-S provides x-axis and y-axis stabilization while the Steadicam arm provides z-axis stabilization. The addition of the Steadimate-S easily and affordably transforms single-handed motorized gimbals into professional video stabilization systems.

“The Steadicam Steadimate-S is a new, elegant solution designed to add stability, operational comfort, and panning ability to single-handed stabilizers that are popular with camera operators,” said Andrew Tiffen, SVP of Marketing, The Tiffen Company. “We look forward to debuting and demonstrating this latest camera stabilizer in our booth at the NAB Show next month.”

The Steadimate-S comes standard with a post block and balance pin that fits arms with 1/2″ posts. The weight capacity varies depending on the single-handed stabilizer, arm, and vest being used. The Steadimate-S adapter can be purchased on its own for use with existing arms and vests, or as a complete kit available in two weight classes. The Steadimate-S 15 System comes with the A-15 Arm & Scout Vest and offers a 15 lbs./6.8 kg weight capacity, while the Steadimate-S 30 System comes with the A-30 Arm & Zephyr Vest and boasts a 30 lbs./13.6 kg capacity.

DJI releases $39 mic adapter for its Osmo Pocket camera

20 Mar

DJI’s Osmo Pocket is an impressive little camera that punches well above its size and size. The video from it has proven impressive, but the one area it lacks is in the sound department.

The onboard microphone aren’t necessarily terrible, but it could use a little improvement, and up until now that wasn’t possible. After many hints that one was on its way, DJI has finally released a 3.5mm microphone adapter for the Oslo Pocket that plugs directly into the camera’s USB Type-C port.

The adapter works with TRS 3.5mm connectors, meaning it supports stereo audio when used with stereo microphones in addition to mono audio. If it’s being used with a TRRS microphone, an additional TRRS to TRS adapter will be needed.

The DJI Oslo Pocket 3.5mm Adapter is available now at B&H and the DJI Store for $ 39.

CP+ 2019: Hands-on with the Sigma MC-21 SA / EF to L-mount adapter

03 Mar

Hands-on with the Sigma MC-21

One of the items on display at the Sigma booth at this year’s CP+ show in Yokohama was the newly-announced MC-21 adapter that allows Sigma lenses to be used on L mount cameras. There are two versions of the adapter: one that accepts Sigma SA-mount lenses and another that takes Sigma’s EF-mount lenses.

Here’ we’ve got an SA-mount version of Sigma’s 50mm F1.4 Art adapted to a Panasonic S1.

Adds compatibility for 29 Global Vision lenses

The company says both the SA- and EF-to-L adapters can be used with 29 existing Sigma lenses, including 23 full-frame lenses taken from the Global Vision range. These lenses span the Sport, Contemporary and Art series. It features a built-in tripod mount, but don’t be fooled by the pair of allen bolts on this example: we’re told this won’t be removable.

Single-AF only, for now

The MC-21 only allows AF-S mode to be used at present. This is likely to be a result of the existing SA and EF mount lenses being primarily designed for being focused by phase detection, whereas all the current L-mount bodies use variants of contrast-detection AF, which may lead to slower, less reliable performance.

Won’t need firmware updates for future lenses

The inside of the adapter features a black flocking fabric to prevent internal reflections occurring within the adapter tube. An LED on the side of the adapter shows whether the attached lens is compatible and whether it needs a firmware update. Sigma says the MC-21 comes pre-loaded with the data needed for the 29 listed lenses supported at launch but that future lenses will contain the necessary data, so the MC-21’s firmware won’t need updating to support future lenses.

SA and EF mount support

Sigma had the MC-21 on show with representative models from its L-mount Alliance partners: Leica and Panasonic. Although there are references to it around the booth, there’s no sign of even a prototype of the full-frame Foveon camera Sigma has said it will make.

As usual, Sigma makes no claims when it comes to Canon’s EF-mount lenses, but they generally work well with its MC-11 EF-to-E-mount adapter.

Godox S-R1 adapter lets you fit round magnetic modifiers and filters to regular hotshoe flashes

27 Jan

Chinese flash manufacturer Godox has launched a new adapter that allows users to attach the company’s round magnetic accessories to regular speedlight-style flash units. The S-R1 adapter uses a clamping mechanism to secure itself around the rectangular head of the flash unit, and then accepts the circular accessories from the AK-R1 range.

Godox round magnetic accessories include diffusers, a snoot, honeycomb grid as well as barndoors and a collection of coloured gels. These were originally designed for the Godox AD200 and H200R flash units, but with this S-R1 adapter they can now also be used on the V860ll, V850ll, TT685 and TT600 hotshoe-style flash guns as well.

Although Godox has specified which of its own flash units this adapter will work with, there is no reason it won’t work with flash guns from other manufacturers that share similar dimensions.

Godox says that the S-R1 is available to buy now, but there is no sign of it in the usual dealers yet and no price has been announced. For more information see the Godox website.

Video: Old projector lens adapter to A7 III body surprisingly makes for beautiful photos, bokeh

24 Jan

In pursuit of something different Mathieu Stern, who runs the Weird Lens Museum website, has adapted an old projector lens to fit on the front of his Sony a7 lll.

The lens he used is a Rollei 90mm f/2.4 MC that would have originally been fitted to a 35mm slide projector. Mathieu says he found the lens without its projector in a yard sale, and paid $ 5 for it. In the three minute video above Mathieu shows the lens in action and a number of photos captured in the sun that seem to have well controlled flare and low contrast.

As the lens has no iris the aperture can’t be varied from F2.4, but based on the results he attained, that doesn’t appear to be a problem. Mathieu discovered the lens fit perfectly into a M52 helicoidal tube which then allowed him to vary the apparent length of the lens so he could focus at a normal range of distances.

The helicoidal tube has an M42 screw mount, so all he needed to do then was find an M42 to Sony E mount adapter so the whole kit would fit on his a7 lll. Sure, it’s not the most elegant solution, but it got the job done. Below is a gallery of images captured with the setup and shared with permission from Mathieu.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1210874026″,”galleryId”:”1210874026″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Kipon adds Nikon Z and Canon R mounts to medium format lens adapter range

14 Dec

Chinese optics manufacturer Kipon has added the Nikon Z and Canon R mounts to its range of medium format to full frame camera adapters. The company claims the adapters ‘virtually eliminate any crop factor’ by way of optics within the adapter that compensate for the difference in imaging areas of the full frame and medium format systems, and says the diagonal angle of view is maintained.

The eight Baveyes focal reducers use a five-element design and work with a number of popular medium format brands, namely Pentax, Mamiya and Hasselblad.

These adapters already exist for Sony full frame, Leica M and Leica SL cameras.
The new adapters will cost $ 695 and can be ordered from this week.
For more information see the Kipon website.

Press information

KIPON start to deliver 8 models new Baveyes/focal reducer for new Nikon Z mount & Canon R mount cameras

KIPON start to deliver 8 models new 0.7x Baveyes/focal reducer for new Nikon Z mount & Canon R mount cameras, increased Baveyes lineup for using medium format lenses on full frame cameras from 24 to 32 models.

  • Baveyes Pentax645-Nikon Z 0.7x
  • Baveyes Pentax67-Nikon Z 0.7x
  • Baveyes MAMIYA645-Nikon Z 0.7x
  • Baveyes Hasselblad V-Nikon Z 0.7x
  • Baveyes Hasselblad V-EOS R 0.7
  • Baveyes MAMIYA645-EOS R 0.7x
  • Baveyes Pentax67-EOS R 0.7x
  • Baveyes Pentax645-EOS R 0.7x

KIPON Baveyes introduces a line-up of the world’s first lens adapters that bring the famous medium format optics to Sony E, Leica SL and Leica M, Nikon Z, Canon R 35mm full frame cameras, virtually eliminating any crop factor image loss and maintaining diagonal angle of view.

The transformation results in a 0.7x factor to the original lens focal length with a gain of one stop in lens speed. Foremost in the advanced adapters, is the custom designed five element multicoated formula by German optics research institution, with the ability to use full frame SLR lenses on crop sensor camera bodies and mirrorless cameras.

Many medium format lenses are legendary for contrast, flare resistance, color saturation, bokeh and are in a class of their own compared to even the best 35mm format glass. And the Sony, Leica, Nikon, Canon image sensors, in the heart of their robust camera bodies, give new life to these medium format legendary lenses.

The retailer price for these optic focal reducer is 695USD,can order from Amazon Japan and Tmall China and Ebay factory shop from this week.

Canon patent shows off EOS M speedbooster-style adapter for EF lenses

08 Dec
This diagram from the patent shows the optical construction of the Converter Adapter (labelled CL) with a Master Lens (labelled ML) in front of it.

A new patent application filed by Canon, and first detailed on Canon News, lays out the schematics for its own version of a speedbooster adapter that would enable Canon EOS M users to adapt EF lenses onto the EF-M mount.

Japanese patent application 2018-189864 details an adapter that includes both a 0.8x focal length reducer, as well as a ‘variable flare cutter.’

As with the speedbooster adapters, Canon’s adapter would use a series of lenses to reduce much of the full-frame field of view onto an APS-C sensor, such as those used inside Canon’s EOS M cameras.

Where things get interesting is that Canon isn’t stopping there. Similar to how Canon has introduced a line of EF to RF adapters with added features, including an integrated control dial and drop-in ND/CPL filters, the adapter detailed in this patent adds yet another component: an adjustable aperture or set of apertures that effectively mask off sections of the adapter to reduce the potentially negative impact of stray, non-image forming, light rays.

This diagram from the patent highlights two separate locations where the variable aperture could be located within the converter (the front of the converter being the left side and the rear of the converter being the right side).

The patent explains this is done by calculating, on the fly via communication through integrated contacts, the ideal pupil sizes and locations of the in-adapter apertures, based on the attached lens’ current aperture and focus distance. With this information, the the adapter could ideally adjust its multiple variable flare cutters.

Within the patent, an example scenario is detailed showing how a full frame 50mm F1.4 lens would effectively become a 40mm F1.2 lens with an image height of 13.66mm and 18mm back focus — precisely the size needed for EOS M cameras.

The resulting combination would act as a 64mm F1.9 equivalent. Not quite as wide or with such a bright equivalent aperture as the full frame lens used on full frame, but still better than using a pass-through adapter.
