Yellow Submarine: Abandoned Car Turned Colorful Street Art

Yellow Submarine Abandoned Car 1

An abandoned car left to rust by the curb in São Paulo, Brazil became a ‘yellow submarine’ art installation for World Car Free Day, turning an eyesore into an attraction. Junkers sitting around in public places can be a depressing sight, but this car is anything but thanks to a creative paint job and a bunch of potted plants.

Yellow Submarine Abandoned Car 2

‘Yellow Submarine’ is the fourth urban intervention of ‘Ocupe Carrinho’ (Occupy the Car), a movement that aims to alleviate the urban blight of abandoned cars through cheerful transformations.

Yellow Submarine Abandoned Car 3

Founded by Felipe Carrelli, Ocupe Carrinho helps call attention to a common problem in the city of São Paulo, where cars are often abandoned due to the high cost of owning them. Carrelli and his crew turn the cars into public art with a bright makeover that extends to the asphalt around them.

Yellow Submarine Abandoned Car 4

The Yellow Submarine began when someone contacted the crew through their Facebook page to let them know about a car that had been sitting in the same spot for three years. Of course, the name is a nod to the song by The Beatles, but it also refers to the city’s flooding issues due to poor stormwater management.

Abandoned Land of Oz Theme Park Opens for Two Days

Abandoned Land of Oz Park 1
At the top of a mountain, a crumbling Yellow Brick Road winds around forests filled with creepy anthropomorphic trees, Dorothy’s dilapidated house and an Emerald Castle made of stone. The Land of Oz has been abandoned for thirty-three years, and it hasn’t seen much restoration during that time, but it opens to the public October 5th for an annual event called ‘Autumn at Oz,’ enabling visitors to see it in all its sad, derelict glory.

Abandoned Land of Oz Park 3

Abandoned Land of Oz Park 2

(images via: rockinfree)

Located at Beech Mountain, a ski resort in Western North Carolina, the Land of Oz saw over 20,000 visitors on its opening day in 1970. A ski lift was modified to resemble a balloon ride, taking guests on an aerial tour of the park with views of the mountain scenery. The park design was based on the book rather than the film, and the visitor was intended to experience it from Dorothy’s point of view.

Despite a 1975 fire that destroyed some artifacts, including the dress worn by Judy Garland in the movie, the Land of Oz was fully operational until 1980. Once it was closed, many items were stolen, vandalized or destroyed, and those that weren’t were given over to the elements. A few pieces remain in storage at Appalachian State University.

The park was partially restored in 1990, and Former employees started Autumn at Oz as a reunion three years later. Now it’s an annual event, opening the doors to the outside world just two days every year. Proceeds from the event go to the (apparently minimal) upkeep of the park.

Abandoned Intervention: Sliding Facade Reveals Decay

03 Oct

[ By Steph in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Sliding Facade Abandoned Building 1

A brand new brick facade slides off the front of a building in Kent, UK to reveal the derelict mess just beyond. Abandoned for 11 years, the four-story structure that stood as an eyesore along a residential street of this seaside town is now an intriguing work of art that makes a statement about what may lie behind the superficiality of seemingly perfect appearances.

Sliding Facade Abandoned Building 3

The crumbling top story remains exposed, giving a glimpse of what is inside only to those who can get high enough to see it. The Cliftonville district of the city, where the installation is located, was once affluent, but struggled as the whims of vacationers turned to other places. With increased crime and poverty came the decay of once-grand architecture.

Sliding Facade Abandoned Building 4

The Thanet District Council of Kent gave artist Alex Chinneck permission to create the installation, entitled ‘From The Knees of My Nose To The Belly Of My Toes’, which will stand for a year before the building is brought back into public use.

Sliding Facade Abandoned Building 5

Ten companies donated materials, manufacturing labor and professional surfaces to get the project off (or rather, on) the ground. “I was aware of this idea that people have a choice whether or not they go through the doors of an art gallery, and often they don’t because they feel intimidated, so I think public art is important,” Chinneck told The Daily Mail.

The Unloved Boats: 8 Abandoned Cruise Ships & Liners

22 Sep

[ By Steve in Global & Travel & Places. ]

abandoned cruise ships ocean liners
Call out “Abandon ship!” and what do you get? Abandoned ships. These 8 abandoned cruise ships and liners are all that’s left of what was left to Poseidon.

MS World Discoverer

abandoned cruise ship World Discover(image via: Panoramio/Darcy O’Shea)

The German-built and Liberian-registered cruise ship MS World Discoverer enjoyed a 25-year-long, mainly trouble-free lifespan as a mid-sized (roughly 225 passengers and crew) passenger liner plying the South Pacific with occasional sorties into the frosty Arctic and Antarctic oceans.

abandoned cruise ship World Discoverer(images via: Sometimes Interesting)

On April 30th of 2000, the World Discoverer was sailing through the Sandfly Passage in the Solomon Islands when she struck an uncharted rock or reef. Captain Oliver Kruess heroically nursed the listing liner into shallow Roderick Bay in the Florida Islands, where all aboard were safely evacuated. The World Discoverer, however, remains where it was beached in 2000, stripped of anything valuable by local islanders.

Looking like an outtake from Life After People, the World Discoverer‘s exploring days are over for good and unlike most other coastal shipwrecks it will probably remain where it is, slowly rusting and moldering away in its sheltered cove, for some time to come. There’s only one thing that worries environmentalists: sometime in the future the World Discoverer’s metal fuel tanks will finally rust through, releasing unknown amounts of poisonous toxins into the sea and onto the beaches.

Queen Elizabeth 2

abandoned QE2 ocean liner(images via: Seabreezes, Barcroft Media and Wikipedia/Dashers)

The jewel in the crown of Britain’s venerable Cunard Line, the ocean liner QE2 sailed the seven seas as both a transatlantic ocean liner and as a premium cruise ship from 1969 until her retirement on November 27th, 2008. Subsequently, the liner was purchased by Istithmar, the private equity arm of Dubai World, whose stated intention was to convert the vessel into a 500-room floating hotel to be moored at the Palm Jumeirah offshore resort in Dubai.

Due to the world financial crisis and its lingering effects on business in Dubai, virtually no work has been carried out on the ship and rumors have persisted the virtually abandoned QE2 would either be sent to Asia, either to be scrapped in China or converted into a floating luxury hotel, shopping mall and museum… and so it goes.

TSS Duke of Lancaster

Launched in 1956, the TSS Duke of Lancaster was built at the Belfast shipyards of Harland & Wolff where the RMS Titanic was constructed almost a half-century earlier. The 4,450 ton, 1,800 passenger steamer operated as a passenger ferry on the Heysham-Belfast route and as a cruise ship calling at a variety of European ports from Spain to Norway for the better part of two decades. In November of 1978, the venerable Duke was retired from service on the seas… a new, landlocked career was about to begin.

In August of 1979, the ship was moved to Llanerch-y-Mor near Mostyn, Wales to become a static leisure center known as “The Fun Ship”. Legal issues and turf tussles with the local council crippled the ownership group’s business model, however, and the Duke’s slab sides were gradually covered by rust and unauthorized graffiti. The latter must have given somebody an idea because surprisingly, there’s life in the old Duke yet: as the largest open air art gallery in the UK.

Beginning in August of 2012, a commission was offered to Latvian graffiti artist Kiwie who spray-painted a large-scale artwork on the ship’s side. Kiwie’s work was augmented and complemented by a wealth of “bright and surreal” graffiti by acclaimed artists including Dale Grimshaw, Dan Kitchener, Snub23, Spacehop, and Fin DAC. The latter’s eye-popping “Mauricamai” covers most the Duke’s stern and has been breathtakingly captured above by Flickr user Mike.

Is It Safe? Nine Creepy Abandoned Dentist Offices

15 Sep

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned dentist offices
These nine creepy abandoned dentist offices feature chairs even a weary marathon man wouldn’t sit on. Listen to your inner drill sergeant, this will hurt a bit!

Adel Reformatory, England

Adel Reformatory abandoned dentist chair(image via: Mexico75)

The Adel Reformatory in Leeds, England opened in 1857 and parts of the complex were still being used until 2004. One hopes the drab, dreary and debris-cluttered dentist office above was abandoned as early as possible. Kids, stay in school… but not a reform school, and especially not if you have a toothache.

Adel Reformatory Leeds abandoned dentist office(images via: Mexico75)

Kudos and congrats to Flickr user Mexico75 for not only capturing the decrepit Adel Reformatory dentist office but for lighting it in such a way that promises unimaginable doom to anyone brave (or foolish) enough to sit in that chair.

Le Palace d’Anfa Hotel, Morocco

Le Palace d'Anfa Morocco abandoned dentist office chair(image via: TripAdvisor.fr)

There’s nothing worse than having a dental emergency while traveling in a strange foreign land, amiright? There are degrees of “worse”, however, and the de facto dental office just next to the gym at the Le Palace d’Anfa Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco takes that degree right off the dial. As for the Le Palace d’Anfa Hotel itself, TripAdvisor recommends tourists “avoid this hotel” regardless of the status of their teeth.

Maison De Cerf, Belgium

dentist Maison de Cerf Belgium abandoned(images via: Day Of The Dead)

This abandoned dentist’s house in Belgium doesn’t look too bad, though one can be certain it’s never going to look any better than this. Located in the home’s working basement, the office appears to have been left suddenly and in great haste by the owner, who never bothered to return for his equipment or teeth molds.

dentist Maison de Cerf abandoned Belgium(image via: Day Of The Dead)

The reclining dentist’s chair was obviously designed for comfort and support but as we all can attest, true relaxation in this situation requires plenty of novocaine and nitrous oxide. One thing’s for certain, a trip to this or any dentist is never “boring”… unless you’ve got a cavity that needs attention, that is.

Abandoned Quarry to Ice World: Pit Reclaimed as Resort

30 Aug

[ By Steph in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 1

China is set to get yet another quarry-turned-resort in an ambitious project by Coop Himmelb(l)au architecture, transforming an abandoned mining pit into an artificial icy landscape with an indoor skiing center and a cantilevered outdoor swimming pool. The Deep Pit Ice and Snow World at Dawang Mountain Resort near Changsha, China will also include a 100-meter-tall hotel with over 300 rooms looking out over Tongxi Lake and Dawang Mountain.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 2

Spanning 170 meters cliff-to-cliff of what is currently an abandoned cement quarry, the resort will offer both cold-weather and warm-weather recreational opportunities, with the icy and snowy attractions inside a sculpted shell. Beneath this volume will be a sunken garden featuring cliffside pathways, ponds and islands. A central glass cone will cut through the building to bring natural daylight into this subterranean space.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 3

A 60-meter (196 feet) waterfall will crash from the cantilevered outdoor swimming pool on the edge of the quarry, deep into the pit. From inside the Snow and Ice World, visitors can peer through large glass facades onto the watery landscape filled with greenery.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 4

The project is very similar to the Shimao Intercontinental Hotel (pictured above), a 19-story, 5-star hotel located deep within a 328-foot abandoned quarry near the base of Tianmashan Mountain near Shanghai. Though the concept seemed too crazy to be true, construction has already begun. That resort will include an aquarium, restaurants, and recreational activities taking advantage of the unique landscape, like rock climbing and water-based sports.

Trouble Feature: 10 Abandoned Drive-In Movie Theaters

25 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned drive-in movie theaters
Drive-in movie theaters stand for the great American auto-centric suburban dream, though as time goes by fewer and fewer of the outdoor screens remain standing.

Driven Out

abandoned drive-in theater Washington(image via: WebUrbanist)

On June 6th, 1933, as many as 400 New Jersey motorists looking to escape the harsh realities of the Great Depression for a while enjoyed Wives Beware, starring Adolphe Menjou, from the comfort of their automobiles. Though the 40 by 50 ft screen at Park-In Theaters in Camden is long gone (it operated for only three years), other relics of the Drive-In Theater Age still stand, if just barely.

The Drive-In Project

abandoned drive-in movie theater(images via: Gadling and Ego-TV)

According to travel photographer Craig Deman, “approximately 90 percent of drive-ins are closed from their peak in the late 1950s.” Deman is somewhat of an expert on the topic, having authored the hauntingly illustrated The Drive-In Project which documents the current state of abandoned drive-in movie theaters from coast to coast.

After The Last Picture Show

abandoned Midway drive-in theatre Sweetwater Texas(images via: Debra Jane Seltzer, robert e weston jr and Paul A. Valentine)

They say “Life Is Sweet In Texas” but since the Midway Drive-In Theatre in Sweetwater, Texas closed things just haven’t been the same. The 230-car capacity drive-in was opened in the 1950s and like many drive-ins of the era, provided a large playground for kids and an outdoor seating area for families in front of the screen.

abandoned Midway drive-in theatre Sweetwater Texas(image via: Nicholas Henderson)

The jagged faux mountain range painted in bold Indian red & forest green on the back of the Midway Drive-In Theatre‘s screen make it an easily identified landmark, even from far across the windswept plains of north-central Texas. Flickr user Nicholas Henderson captured the screen-back backdrop’s eerie essence above, looking little the worse for wear, on a bright summer’s day in 2011.

Lake Woe Begone

abandoned Lake drive-in Mt. Orab Ohio (images via: Darren Snow and Lowand77)

There’s not much left of Mt. Orab, Ohio’s Lake Drive-In besides its inimitable Fabulous Fifties main sign and the moldering wooden ticket shack. Indeed, the theater’s Happy Days indeed have long since faded though Richie, Potsie, Ralph and the Fonz still likely have fond memories of many a moonlit night… hey Arthur, don’t you think it’s about time you let those guys out of the trunk?

Good Pie & Farewell: 10 Crusty Old Abandoned Pizzerias

Hold the anchovies and everything else! These 10 crusty old abandoned pizzerias have sliced their penultimate pepperoni and will cut the cheese no longer.

Antonio’s Pizza – Long Beach, California

Antonio's Pizzeria North Torrance abandoned(image via: Nobody Walks In Long Beach)

It’s hard to believe a pizzeria with a BYOB policy could fail but fail Antonio’s Pizza did, and its remains still stand in North Torrance, California to remind us of its past glory. You might still see the store’s flaked and fading shell still standing at the corner of Prairie Avenue and 182nd St. Question: is it still OK for pizzerias to depict stereotypical Italian chefs in their signage, or has that practice gone the way of the Frito Bandito?

abandoned Antonio's Pizzeria North Torrance

Antonio’s Pizza closed almost 20 years ago but as of August 2012 when these photos were taken, it still stood abandoned. Even odder, the building is remarkably unmarked by graffiti. Kudos to the indomitable Dennis of Nobody Walks In Long Beach for capturing the ruins of Antonio’s Pizzeria on a marvelously sun-soaked southern California afternoon. I’d bring my own beer there just to enjoy the building’s timeless and atmospheric presence.

Bilit’s Pizza & Philly Steaks – Beaufort, South Carolina

Bilit's Pizza & Philly Steaks abandoned Beaufort fire(images via: The Beaufort Gazette)

We’re shocked, SHOCKED to hear that a “suspicious” fire destroyed a long-abandoned pizzeria but believe it or not, it happened… one night in late June of 2013, in Beaufort, South Carolina to be exact. The foreclosed & bank-owned shell of the former Bilit’s Pizza & Philly Steaks on 500 Laurel Bay Road gutted the building, which had been abandoned for several years and had no working electrical service. In related news, time was you could get Philly Steaks in South Carolina.

Melina’s Pizzeria – Hoboken, New Jersey

Melina's Pizzeria Hoboken abandoned(image via: Baseballoogie)

Something’s broken in Hoboken (more than a few, though that’s changing) and we’re looking at you, Melina’s Pizzeria on the corner of 6th and Adams Street. Flickr user Baseballoogie snapped what may be the last and best image of the well-loved Jersey landmark though it’s not known if he was the last to gustatorially experience its “well-regarded” and “unique” pizza style.

abandoned Melina's Pizzeria Hoboken(images via: Hoboken411 and Baseballoogie)

Who knew the Animaniacs loved Melina’s Pizzeria so much? Not Steven Spielberg, we’re guessing, though potential legalities are a moot point now that Melina’s is no more. The undoubtedly unauthorized art does serve to effectively date the tableau, however, as a lost signpost of Nineties pop culture.

Royal Blush: Japan’s Abandoned Queen Chateau Soapland

11 Aug

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel
Fleeting moments of pleasure, a lifetime of neglect: that pretty much sums up the Queen Chateau soapland, a now-abandoned “brothel with baths” in Mito, Japan.

The Queen of Clean

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned(image via: Michael John Grist)

The abandoned Queen Chateau in Mito, two-hours northeast of Tokyo, epitomizes the often gauche and over-the-top architecture commonly displayed by Japan’s legions of Love Hotels and Soaplands. The latter, for those unfamiliar with the term, are thinly-disguised brothels where male clients are “bathed” and ahem, catered to by female attendants. Feeling hung out to dry in Japan? You must be at a soapland!

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(images via: Mike’s Blender, Seb and Redjunction)

Formerly known as toruko-buro (literally “Turkish Bath”), the popular descriptor for these establishments was changed to the more innocuous “Soapland” in 1984 following a successful campaign by offended Turkish scholar Nusret Sancakli. It was decided that a nationwide contest would be held to determine what new term should be used for such establishments and Soapland was the winner. Only in Japan, amiright? In any case, the semantic switch occurred right around the time of the Queen Chateau’s grand opening in April of 1984.

Let’s Get Carded

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(images via: Michael John Grist and Totoro Times)

The Queen Chateau soapland is situated on a hill in Mito’s otherwise-thriving red light district, a location that accentuates its multistory castle-inspired layout. If “Dracula” was remade by Vivid Video, this would be the Count’s bachelor pad. A tile mosaic of a playing card Queen – probably the Queen of Hearts though no suit is indicated – extends three-quarters of the way up the front facade. Impressive from afar, up close the many missing tiles reveal the extent of the building’s decay since it was abandoned.

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(images via: Mike’s Blender and Michael John Grist)

A ground-level view from intrepid Haikyo (modern ruins) explorer Michael John Grist is a surreal scene that simply screams “neglect”. Rampant weed overgrowth and an accumulation of detritus & debris shroud the blocked main entrance, forcing any curious urban explorers and/or local homeless types (one of whom is rumored to have died inside) to gain egress via the back entrance formerly used by the hired help.

Welcome to the Pleasure Doom

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(images via: Totoro Times)

As is SOP with most semi-shady erotic operations of this nature, the actual service providers received few considerations from the shadowy operators. In the case of the Queen Chateau soapland, the “staff” of 10 had only a windowless, communal basement room to retreat to when not on duty. The room’s furniture consisted of 6 bunk-beds and just outside are the ruins of a small dining room and a tiny bathroom.

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(image via: Totoro Times)

A narrow concrete corridor leads from the staff area to the first floor lobby, where the main focal point is a disturbingly defaced mural of three charming bath companions. Can you say “sleazy”? I knew you could! A semicircular front desk did double duty as the building’s communications hub while off to one side, a sweeping stairway with an ornate wrought iron bannister beckoned clients to the nirvana awaiting them on the upper floors.

Please Don’t Stair

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned brothel(images via: Michael John Grist and Seb)

Nowadays a different sort of reward is promised to those contemplating higher pursuits: the Japanese graffiti at the foot of the stairs reads “If you go upstairs you will die.” Since philosophically speaking (and to paraphrase a quote from the film Heavy Metal) “I die, you die, we all die” eventually, ignoring the warning and making the fateful climb won’t really change things in the long run. Luckily for you and I, brave urban explorers Michael John Grist, Jordy Meow and the jolly gang from 28 Days Later among others have photo-documented their experiences on our behalf.

Japan Queen Chateau soapland abandoned(image via: Totoro Times)

The road to Hell might be paved with good intentions but this stairway to heaven – sorry, Page & Plant – is carpeted with vermilion and gold shag… that last word is in no way coincidental.

Abandoned Bridge Amphitheater Reclaims Urban Space

06 Aug

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Abandoned Bridge Amphitheater 1

An abandoned, deteriorating bridge in the city of Kosice in Slovakia has been rehabbed and modified to serve as an amphitheater and public gathering space that glows in bright rainbow colors at night. The urban intervention was organized by Atrium Studio and Esterni as a temporary installation to reclaim this prominent disused space.

Abandoned Bridge Amphitheater 2

On one side of the bridge, a wooden framework was built that serves as a stage for concerts and performances. On the other, a wooden seating system makes the concrete surface more comfortable for those who come to enjoy the free public shows.

Abandoned Bridge Amphitheater 3

This project echoes many other urban interventions that seek to take the ownership of neglected or abandoned urban spaces into the hands of the people.

Abandoned Bridge Amphitheater 4

Urban interventions can be as subtle as adding eyeballs to mailboxes and other public objects, or as bold as repainting an entire abandoned church in shocking hues.
