Secret Cities: Capturing Hidden Abandoned Places on Film

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 1
Just beyond all of the noise and activity of daily urban life is a secret world of forgotten spaces which are nearly always dank and dusty, but often surprisingly beautiful. Photographer Andrew Brooks seeks out these spots in Manchester, UK and Sittard-Geleen, The Netherlands, capturing them on film so the less adventurous can experience a small fraction of their crumbling glory.

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 2

Brooks gains entry into grand disused buildings that seem frozen in time, like the Hulme Hippodrome and Manchester’s Albert Hall, as well as subterranean tunnels and decommissioned water towers. At his website, the photographer provides detailed information about each location he shoots, describing what it felt like to experience them firsthand, as well as offering his stunning images.

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 3

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 6

The forgotten spaces just out of view of the average person in virtually any major city around the world start to occupy ‘imaginary spaces,’ says Brooks. It’s easy to envision them as settings for all sorts of fictional intrigue, to let our imaginations run wild with the possibilities of these often complex spaces, yet most of us are too wrapped up in our immediate surroundings to give them much thought.

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 4

Secret Cities Abandoned Places 5

“The familiar space we occupy gradually take on the character of wallpaper in our lives as we hurry from meeting to meeting, commitment to commitment, never stopping to appreciate the places where we live. In our rush we miss both the fantasy and reality of our pace in the world, habitually ignoring even the points where the opportunities for simple adventure encourage us to indulge.”

Landing Stripped: 8 Grounded & Abandoned Spaceships

abandoned spaceships
If abandoned spaceships weren’t so hard to find (please don’t look for any in Antarctica), we wouldn’t have to make them for movies, TV, art or just for fun.

Pitch Black Spaceship

Even if you’ve never visited Coober Pedy in southern Australia, you probably have seen it via your movie or TV screen. The inhospitable desert wasteland lies in the heart of OZ’s opal mining country and the otherworldly setting has been featured as a film location for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Red Planet, and Pitch Black to name just a few. The latter flick featured the above wrecked spaceship, bought about a dozen years ago by a local shop owner after filming was completed.

While the Pitch Black spaceship prop has held up remarkably well thanks to the Outback’s arid conditions, those who feel tempted to have themselves photographed in front of it should advise their camera-person to ensure the “SHOWERS & TOILETS” sign doesn’t photobomb the shot.

Oklahoma Cement Mixer Space Capsule

Oklahoma cement mixer space capsule(images via: Two Wheel Oklahoma, viewAt.org and NewsOn6)

Construction crews hard at work building a bridge over Oologah Lake near Talala, Oklahoma in 1959 couldn’t believe their eyes when the driver of a cement mixer loaded with liquid cement lost control of the massive vehicle. As he swerved off Winganon Road, the truck overturned and it wasn’t long before the cement inside began to harden. The truck was salvaged, mostly… the now solid cement-filled bell was too heavy to shift and has remained in place for over a half-century.

Pranksters have painted and otherwise decorated the mixer a number of times over the years; a recent redo occurring just after 9/11 when it was painted patriotically in the American flag’s stars and stripes. The latest extreme makeover dates from late September of 2011 when Barry & Heather Thomas used canning lids, garden hose and other household items to transform the mixer into a NASA space capsule as a way of celebrating their 5th wedding anniversary. Kudos to Flickr user Arkomas for posting the above cool pic.

Buran Buran

Buran Baikal Soviet space shuttle(images via: The Living Moon c/o English Russia)

In post-Soviet Russia, Earth crash on spaceship! On May 12th of 2002 the hangar housing Buran, Russia’s only space shuttle to be launched into orbit and land successfully back on Earth, collapsed during a severe storm. Eight workers lost their lives in the accident and the shuttle was destroyed. Not many know, however, that Buran was only the first of FIVE Soviet shuttles completed or under construction when the program was cancelled in 1993. The second shuttle was named Ptichka; the third was named Baikal.

Buran Baikal Soviet space shuttle(images via: The Living Moon c/o English Russia)

In October of 2004 Baikal, estimated to 30-50% completed, was moved from its hangar at the Tushino factory to an open-air car-park where it spent the next 7 years protected only by flimsy tarpaulins.

Buran barge MAKS-2011(image via: The Moscow News)

The curious image above dates from late June of 2011, when the fuselage of Shuttle 2.01 Baikal was floated down the Volga river by barge. Its ultimate destination was the MAKS 2011 international air show, which took place from August 16th through 21st at Zhukovsky town near Moscow. We don’t think that’s Russian president Vladimir Putin in the image above, returning from a bathroom break to resume towing the barge downstream, but we could be wrong (and we wouldn’t be surprised).

Sounds Of Sirens: 10 Alarmingly Abandoned Firehalls

04 Nov

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned firehalls
Made to last and styled to please, these abandoned firehalls silently linger on long after the factories and buildings they were built to protect have gone.

Centennial Fire Co. #4, Peekskill NY

Centennial firehouse Peekskill NY (image via: donbco)

Built in 1890, the squat, red brick Centennial Fire Co. #4 in Peekskill, New York appears positively ancient in contrast with the circa-1932 iron bridge looming just overhead. The two-story structure featured an attached outbuilding that once housed a pair of horses, Homer and John, who pulled the station’s fire-wagon in times of need. Full credit to Flickr user donbco for the image above, taken on a beautiful sunny spring day in April of 2008.

Peekskill Centennial firehouse (images via: Hudson Valley Ruins/Rob Yasinsac, New York Times and donbco)

Centennial Fire Co. #4 was closed on Oct. 19th, 1980, and sat abandoned beneath its sheltering bridge for nearly 30 years. Finally in 2008, funding was arranged to move the historic structure a short block away to a city park where it was to be incorporated into a firefighter’s memorial. Unfortunately, the move ended before it really began when, on August 21st of 2008, a hydraulic jack failed and the building crumpled (see it here!) like a house of cards.

Abandoned Firehouse, Suurpea, Estonia

Outwardly resembling a mid-century American ranch-style bunglow, this abandoned firehouse in Harju County, Estonia, is anything but. As captured in 2010 by Panoramio user Salasilm, this plain and pleasant building in the village of Suurpea, about 30 miles east of Talinn, is just beginning to display signs of neglect and abandonment. It’s not alone – only a couple hundred people still live in the village which seems to have enjoyed much better days as a Soviet-era military base and housing estate.

Built in 1895, the Detroit Fire Department’s Engine House 22 witnessed the much-maligned city’s rise and fall. The firehall itself fell silent in 1983, only to reopen in 1991 as a Spanish restaurant called Casa de Espana. The twin “skylights” above make more sense when one imagines the original pair of fire poles in place. Kudos to DetroitUrbex for these inside & out images of this forlorn firehall.

Shortly after one of the restaurant’s owners lost his life in an auto accident, the business closed and the building resumed its slide into neglect and decay along with so many other examples of classic Detroit architecture. Recent reports state the structure may implode on its own before the wrecking ball swings; part of the roof has already fallen in.

Built in 1869, one year before the town of Dorchester was annexed by Boston, the Engine Co. 18 Firehouse certainly has a lot of history behind it. Located at 30 Harvard Street in the Four Corners section of Dorchester, the station closed on June 11th of 1960 and spent the next 45 years as a pre-school and daycare center. Abandoned since 2005, the historic building was finally sold in 2012 to a young couple who plan to restore the building as a live-in arts space.

Dutch photographer and urban exploration specialist Niki Feijen goes behind “do not enter” signs on dilapidated houses to document furniture, clothes, and other ornaments left behind by their former owners. His eerie HDR images reveal remnants of life in rooms across western Europe that are now left to decay. Frozen in time, it’s hard not to imagine the people that once occupied the spaces. See gallery
