Kenny Coverstone sieht in der Fotogemeinschaft viel Neid und Missgunst und fordert in seinem Artikel „Why I can’t stand the photography community“ mehr Gemeinschaftlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft. Er bezieht sich dabei besonders auf den Umgang mit Fotoanfängern, die viel negative Bewertungen bekommen, anstatt hilfreiche Kritik und gute Tipps. Coverstone ist davon überzeugt, dass es auch die eigene Fotografie stark bereichert, einander zu helfen. Jeder Lehrer lernt auch von seinen Schülern. → ansehen
Die Washington Post stellt die Fotoserie „African Souls“ der deutschen Fotografin Manuela Kulpa vor, die Zootiere in verschiedenen europäischen Zoos portraitiert. Kulpa möchte mit der Serie zeigen, dass auch Tiere eine Seele haben und im Artikel wird kurz die Problematik artgerechter Haltung in Zoos gestreift. Leider wirken diese guten Ansätze nahezu zynisch, sieht man sich die romantisierten Bilder der Fotografin an, die in Sepiatönen gehalten sind und keinen Hinweis auf Betonböden, Zäune und Glasfenster geben. Qualitativ sicher schöne Bilder, aber die Intention ist verfehlt. → ansehen
1903 begründete Bernarr Macfadden die These, dass das Schwimmen im eisigen Atlantik gut für die Gesundheit sei, da es nicht nur das Immunsystem anrege, sondern auch die Ausdauer und Potenz steigere. Trotz einiger Kritiker setzt sich die Tradition des Winterschwimmens bis heute fort und findet jedes Jahr am 1. Januar ihren Höhepunkt. Der Fotograf Mathieu Asselin war dieses Jahr eher zufällig bei dem Spektakel auf Coney Island und nutzte die Chance einige Portraits der Schwimmer zu erstellen. Gegen das Meer stehend und in düsteren Farben gehalten, funktioniert die Serie sehr gut und vermittelt die Kälte vor Ort und die Durchsetzungskraft der Portraitierten. → ansehen

In einem ausführlichen Artikel auf The Photoblographer begründet Coghe anhand von zehn Leitgedanken seine Passion, die ihm nicht nur einen regelmäßigen Adrenalinstoß gibt, sondern auch Quelle neuer kreativer Kraft ist. Und ganz nebenher benutzt er eine in Fotografenkreisen selten beanspruchte Metapher und vergleicht die Ausübung des Genres mit der Ankunft eines Orgasmus. Soso. → ansehen
Wer glaubt, ISIS, Al-Qaida und die Taliban wären die einzigten Terror-Gruppierungen der Welt, hat noch nichts von den Seleka-Rebellen gehört, die in der Republik Zentralafrika ihr Unwesen treiben. Human Rights Watch-Kriesenkoordinator Peter Bouckaert und VII-Fotofraf Marcus Bleasdale machten sich im Winter 2013 auf, um das Grauen zu dokumentieren und der Welt von den verheerenden Zuständen eines vom Bürgerkrieg geplagten Landes zu erzählen. Familienfotos müssen nicht kitschig sein. Danielle Guenther aus New York City stellt dies unter Beweis, denn sie fotografiert Eltern mit ihren Kindern auf eine bisher selten oder gar nicht praktizierte Weise. Anstatt die Schokoladenseiten des Familienlebens herauszustellen, konzentriert sich die Fotografin auf das (nicht so) glatte Gegenteil: Dem Alltags-Stress, welchem alle Eltern gnadenlos ausgeliefert sind. Seit Danielle Guenther die Bilder publik gemacht hat, ist die Fotografin ausgebucht und ihre Aufnahmen werden im Netz überall herumgereicht. Dieses Konzept ging dann wohl auf. → ansehen

Die amerikanische Huffington Post macht es uns leicht, 2014 noch einmal vorüberziehen zu lassen. Die Redakteurin des Ressorts für Kunst und Kultur, Katherine Brooks sammelte 52 Aufnahmen, die in chronologischer Reihenfolge Ereignisse in aller Welt erfassen. So ist von der Neujahrs-Feier 2013/14 in Frankfurt über die Gay Pride Parade in Stockholm bis hin zu den Protesten in Washington alles dabei. Was im Nachhinein tatsächlich schade ist, bemerkt man leider nur, wenn man genau hinsieht: Keine einzige Fotografin, kein einziger Fotograf wurde genannt. → ansehen
Wir machen heute eine Ausnahme und verlinken ein Fotoessay aus dem August des letzten Jahres, welches jedoch dieser Tage im Netz erneut besprochen wurde. Es handelt sich dabei um die Erlebnisse einer LA-Times Fotojournalistin, die nach heftigem Bombardement von Gaza City die Zustände der Bewohner erlebte und fotografierte. Es sind bewegende Bilder und Worte, die uns schonungslos die Abgründe des Krieges vor Augen halten. → ansehen
Selten schafft ein Fotograf in kurzer Zeit so viel zu bewegen, wie Kevin McElvaney. Der in Norddeutschland Geborene lernte vor vier Jahren die Fotografie kennen und dokumentierte in der Zwischenzeit Arbeiter des Computer-Friedhofes Agbogbloshie, Palästinenser im Westjordanland und nun die Tagelöhner am Kawah Ijen, einem Schwefelvulkan in Indonesien. Die Süddeutsche veröffentlichte gestern exklusive Aufnahmen von einem Ort, an den sich nur wenige Menschen trauen, wenn sie nicht durch ihre Armut dazu gezwungen werden. → ansehen

Happy paddling and photography in the New Year 2015. Don’t forget to take a camera with you!
These are pictures from my last paddling in 2014. I paddled my Sea Wind canoe on December 27 on Horsetooth Reservoir 3 miles from the South Bay to Quarry Cove. The Quarry Cove just before sunset is my favorite photography spot on the Horsetooth. When I was paddling back after sunset ice started to form in the entry to the Inlet Bay.

The Lightroom Print module is a great tool for creating print layouts, but one thing it is not designed to do is make calendars (hopefully Adobe will introduce this feature in future versions of Lightroom). Luckily, in spite of that it is not too difficult to create a calendar once you know how, and you are prepared to put the work in to create the month and day parts of the calendar.
Or – you can let someone else do all the hard work. That somebody is photographer Ed Weaver, who has created some Print module calendar templates that anybody can download from his website for free.
Ed updates the templates every year, and has recently added templates for 2015. There are two versions, one with the week starting on Sunday, and the other with it starting on Monday. Just select the one that is appropriate for your part of the world (the links are at the bottom of the web page) and download the files.
The download includes a set of calendar graphics and Lightroom Print Templates, along with instructions. All you have to do is import the calendar images into the Lightroom Catalog and add the Print Templates to the Print module. It only takes a few minutes and you’re ready to go.
Follow these instructions to make your first calendar using Ed’s templates.
1. Open the folder containing the templates you want to use. Import the JPEGs into Lightroom. There are two JPEGs for every month in 2015, one with large numbers, the other with small numbers (see below), giving 24 in total.
2. Go to the Library module and create a Collection for the calendar. Add both the calendar JPEGs you just imported plus any photos you may wish to use in the calendar.
3. Go to Lightroom’s Print module, then select Print > New Template Folder from the menu. Give the folder an appropriate name (i.e. 2015 Calendar). Right-click on the folder name and select Import. Navigate to the folder where Ed’s calendar templates are stored, select them all and click the Import button.
4. Open the Template Folder you just created. There are ten templates to choose from. When you click on a template, Lightroom displays it in the Content window (see below). The templates use the Custom Package layout style, which means that Lightroom doesn’t add photos to the layout automatically. Instead, you have to do it yourself by dragging the photos from the Filmstrip.
5. Drag photos and calendar templates as needed from the Filmstrip to create your calendar. With this template, you need just one of each.
6. Click the Create Saved Print button in the top right corner of the Content window (see below). Give the print a name in the Create Print window and click the Create button. Lightroom creates a Print Collection (marked by a printer icon in the Collections panel) containing only the images used in the print. Now you can leave the Print module and return to your print at any time without losing any changes.
7. Repeat for the rest of the months in the year, and you have a complete calendar.
Here are some examples using some of the other templates:
Ed’s templates are great, but there is no easy way to change the colours, fonts, or any other aspect of the design of the JPEG files, at least not in Lightroom. If you want to change the style, you should open the files in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Using layers, it is relatively straightforward to replace the font Ed used with that of your own choice, or change the colours. Of course, you could also start completely from scratch and create your calendar files to use with Ed’s templates.
You can change the background colour of the calendar from its default white by going to the Page panel and ticking the Page Background Color box. Click the swatch on the right to choose a colour. Just bear in mind that adding a background colour uses more ink if you print the calendar on an inkjet printer.
