  • Bitcoin Pris juni 2009 2015 Erfarenheter

• Sony posts significant imaging division income gains in 2015 financial year-end report

There’s plenty of bad news going around the camera industry lately. Companies once flush with cash from compact camera sales are now struggling to keep sales even. But despite the downward trend on a lot of camera manufacturers’ books, Sony is coming through with some positive numbers. In its latest year-end financial report, the company boasts a 30.4 billion yen increase in operating income for its imaging products division, despite a 1.7% year-on-year decrease in sales.

It’s a familiar story – Sony attributes the gain in income to a more favorable mix of high-value products, no doubt including its full-frame mirrorless line and premium RX-series compacts. Cost-reduction measures are also cited as contributing to the income gains. And though the upward trend is no doubt good for Sony, those numbers aren’t quite as impressive as they seem at first glance. The imaging division’s 2014 figures were hit by significant restructuring charges, bringing down the bottom line by 7.3 billion yen by the end of the year.

Even taking into account last year’s mark-down, Sony has put up some very strong numbers for its imaging products in 2015’s financial year.

  • How Far We’ve Come: Canon 5DS R (2015) vs Canon D2000 (1998)

Canon DSLR comparison between the Canon D2000 and the Canon 5DS R

Over on my YouTube channel All Things Photo I’ve released a video looking at how far DSLR technology has come in 17 years by comparing the first Canon branded DSLR circa 1998, the Canon D2000,  to the latest Canon DSLR, the Canon 5DS R.To my surprise the D2000 still has some tricks up its sleeve!

The amusing thing about creating this video is that it took me down memory lane as to why I held out until 2006 to dive in on buying a very expensive DSLR. I held out on shooting film to avoid unacceptable digital noise in long exposures and to continue shooting full frame.  Now its amusing looking back at how bad things were, but I take solace in having more than decent alternatives. It’s good to remember back to the pain points of old school DSLRs to appreciate how good we have it today.

  • Best Photos of 2015 by Jim M. Goldstein

As is my ritual I’ve compiled my best photos of the year. Similar to last year much of my efforts have been focused on stoking my 5 year old son’s curiosity about nature.  It would be very easy to focus on my photography, but the reason I pursue outdoor photography is because of my deep appreciation for it. I’d like to pass that on to both my boys and with that in mind most of my outings this year were to share the experience exclusively with my son rather than my camera. That said unlike last year my best photos are not Instagram photos (jimgoldstein), but a mixture of DSLR and medium format film via a newly acquired Fuji GX617. Having taken a hiatus from film photography for over 10 years it’s been a great challenge to rexperience the joy and pain of it as I’ve begun sharing in a shot series Revising Film Photography.

Australian photographer Warren Richardson has won the 2015 World Press Photo of the Year. Richardson’s winning photo, taken on the night of August 28, 2015 at the Hungarian-Serbian border, shows a baby being passed through a barbed wire fence by a refugee.

Speaking about his photo, Richardson explained:

I camped with the refugees for five days on the border. A group of about 200 people arrived, and they moved under the trees along the fence line. They sent women and children, then fathers and elderly men first. I must have been with this crew for about five hours and we played cat and mouse with the police the whole night. I was exhausted by the time I took the picture. It was around three o’clock in the morning and you can’t use a flash while the police are trying to find these people, because I would just give them away. So I had to use the moonlight alone.

According to World Press Photo Foundation, the latest contest received 82,951 images from 5,775 photographers across 128 countries. A total of 41 photographers from 21 countries were awarded prizes across eight categories – see a few above (click for full captions) and a full gallery at World Press Photo’s website.

Both formidable cameras in their own categories, the D7200 nabs the runner-up title with its DX-format 24.2MP sensor, sophisticated AF system and enjoyable handling and ergonomics.

    Runner-up: Olympus OM-D E-M5 II

‘How do you follow up a classic?’ is the question we found ourselves asking of the OM-D E-M5 II. Taking the second-place position in our final poll with 12.9% of the overall vote, the E-M5 II does a fine job of following up its well-regarded predecessor, and its class-leading 5-axis image stabilization system helps it stand out among last year’s notable products.

    Winner: Sony a7R II

It was our Product of the Year and now that the votes are in, we know it was yours too. The Sony a7R II left a major impression on the industry in 2015 with its sheer capability: a 42MP sensor, built-in image stabilization and 4K video, for starters. Winning by a landslide, the a7R II took 36% of the overall vote.

Thanks to everyone that voted, and we hope that you’re all looking forward to more great gear in 2016!

  • Sony camera and sensor business units report drop in sales in 2015

Sony Corp. released its third quarter 2015 earnings report [PDF], in which the company disclosed notable drops in both camera and image sensor sales. It has also lowered the forecast for both business units, though both are still expected to make a profit in the current fiscal year.

Note the drop in camera sales but increase in operating income due to the shift to higher-end models.

Sales in the Imaging Products unit dropped by 5%, due to decreases in unit sales of digital still and video cameras, reflecting ‘a contraction of the market, partially offset by an improvement in the product mix of digital cameras reflecting a shift to high value-added models.’ In other words, they’re selling fewer cheap compacts and more RX and a7-series cameras. Operating income went up by over 20%, however, due the aforementioned shift to higher-end digital cameras.

Image sensor and battery sales are way down in Q3 2015 vs Q3 2014, and the forecast for FY2015 has been lowered considerably.

The image sensor business took an even bigger hit. Sales in the Devices unit decreased by over 12% year-on-year due primary to a drop in sales of image sensors as well as batteries. Operating income dropped ¥65.5bn ($ 540m) to –¥11.7bn ($ 97m), due in large part to a write-down in assets related to batteries. While not specific to digital cameras, the company’s statement mentioned a 7.5% drop in sales to external partners.

Sales in Q1 and Q2 2015 were down more than 500k units each year-on-year and the company’s forecast shows the gap widening in Q3 2015.

Sony also revised its October forecasts downward for both business units. The Imaging unit’s estimated sales has been reduced by 1.4% and now stands at ¥710bn (compared to ¥724bn in FY2014), while the forecast for the Devices business has been brought down by 11.3% to ¥940bn (compared to ¥927bn in FY2014). Both units are still expected to make a operating profit in FY2015, however.

On other item of note from the company’s earnings call mentions the Oita manufacturing facility it recently bought from Toshiba. Sony says that they are considering using a portion of the factory for producing ‘logic’ (processors) rather than photodiodes (sensors) in order to reduce the cost of its sensors. While the company is considering this change to ‘mitigate the downsized rate in [the sensor] business’, it is ‘confident in the long-term prospects of image sensors.’
