Microsoft Word 2010 – Stop the Not So Smart Quotes

09 Oct

Prevent Word 2010 from converting your quotes into those that don’t always paste well into other applications and documents.

Microsoft Word 2010 has a tendency to perform a great deal of correcting as you type, useful if you keep typing in teh instead of the (unless you really want to type in teh Internets, which in this case Word can be annoying). Among this happily-correcting behavior is the changing of quotation marks to “smart quotes”, ones where the quotes slant at an angle.

Unfortunately, if you copy and paste documents containing “smart quotes” into other applications, such as web page editors, these quotes may not appear as desired. Worse, you might paste them into an HTML document, notice that the quotes look fine on screen, but users with other browsers / operating systems may see strange characters instead of the quotes. Definitely not so smart… So, how can you disable them?…

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Stop Ending Slide Shows with a Black, Blank Slide

02 Oct

Remove the black, blank slide that PowerPoint 2010 adds to the end of slideshows.

After displaying a slide show, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 ends with a black, blank slide with the text “End of slide show, click to exit”. Presumably, the reason for this is that slide shows may be shown on a projector or larger monitor. After a slide show is finished, you can use the black slide to “cut the feed” so participants will not see the raw slides in PowerPoint as well as your Desktop, Taskbar, etc.

If you do not care about your participants seeing these things, you might find this ending slide annoying and wish to just exit straight from a slide show back into the PowerPoint application. To remove this ending slide, do the following:…

Microsoft Outlook 2010 – Use Your Own Reminder Sound

01 Oct

Configure Outlook 2010 to play a reminder sound of your choosing.

As tasks / calendar items become due in Microsoft Outlook 2010, it warns you by displaying a “Reminder” dialog box and playing an alert sound.

If you tire of this sound, why not insert your own? You can use virtually any sound file as long as it is in the WAV format….

1 October, 2010 – Bombay Taxi – On the Pursuit of Images

01 Oct

Today’s new essay is titled Bombay Taxi. It is by Azhar Chougle, a photojournalist who lives in Bombay, India, and who also studies in New York. In it he explores what it takes to persevere in the pursuit of images.

I have been shooting in the mountains of Virginia this past week, with my Sony A900, and also a Sony A55, kindly loaned to me by Sony Canada for further testing. (If you haven’t already done so, you might want to look at my A55 Preview Report and also my recent A55 Further Evaluation)

I continue to be impressed by the A55, though when used alongside the A900 the EVF does leave something to be desired. Image quality doesn’t though, and while only 16MP vs 24MP, IQ is excellent, displaying at least two stops lower noise than the A900 at higher ISOs.

Today’s Home Page image was taken with the A55 on my shoot this past week, and there will be a few more on these pages in the days ahead.

Of note to those interested in the A55 and A33 is that Sony just announced that the camera is subject to overheating after a certain amount of time when shooting video with sensor stabilization turned on.

I am not surprised, since I noted this issue in my A55 Further Evaluation report several weeks ago – to my knowledge that being the only test report of this camera that observed and reported on this phenomenon thus far.

Microsoft Publisher 2010 – Grayscale, Sepia, or Tint an Image

29 Sep

For artistic reasons, convert an image in a Publisher 2010 document to grayscale, give it a sepia tone, or tint it another color.

If you’ve ever decided that to better blend in with a document design, a picture should be converted to grayscale, sepia tone, or given a different colored tint, you might have thought you needed to perform the operation outside of Microsoft Publisher 2010. Think again – you can alter images in a Publisher 2010 document with just a couple of clicks.

1. First, select the image you wish to modify….

24 September, 2010 – Review of Sony’s NEX Firmware Update

26 Sep

When the Sony NEX 3 and NEX 5 started to ship a few months ago Sony was taken to task, by both reviewers and end users for its poor user interface. At the time I called the menu design "a dog’s breakfast".

But now, just three months later, Sony has announced a firmware update and plans to make it available by mid-October.

I have been testing this new firmware for the past few days, and my report on what it does and how well it addresses the failings of the original design is now online in my exclusive Sony NEX Firmware Update Review.

I have learnt so much more after looking through this on the weekend.  The tip about pushing blacks and fill light in the Basic Module was worth the price alone.  My images of a recent trip to the Australian Outback are popping and punching with delight!

Thanks Michael and Jeff – I really appreciate you taking the considerable time to share your in-depth knowledge and insights."
