With its 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED screen the Galaxy Alpha is similar in dimensions to the Galaxy S5 Mini but 6.7mm thinner. The device comes with a 12MP rear camera which is unusual in that no other current high-end Samsung offers this sort of megapixel-count but no information on sensor size and technology is currently available.

13 Jun

Pentax Ricoh has announced the Q7 – its latest Q-mount camera and the first to feature a larger, 1/1.7″ type sensor. The 7.44 x 5.58mm, 12MP BSI CMOS sensor is the same size as the one used in many enthusiast compacts, with the company claiming a 60% improvement in S/N ratio over the existing Q10. This improvement also allows the camera to focus faster in low light. The Q7 will cost around $ 500 with the ’02’ 5-15mm zoom lens and can be custom-ordered in any of 120 color combinations. The company has also introduced a body-cap ‘Mount Shield’ lens for the Q system – the 11.5mm F9 lens will cost around $ 80.

Latest Sony 12MP sensor allows brighter lenses for enthusiast compacts

16 Oct

IMX144.png

Sony has published details of its latest 12MP 1/1.7″-type (7.5 x 5.6mm) back-lit CMOS sensor. The IMX144CQJ offers full-resolution 12-bit output at up to 35 frames per second or a roughly ‘widescreen’ 17:9 crop at up to 60 fps – allowing 4k video. Sony stresses how well the sensor can receive light from oblique angles, thanks to its large pixel size, making it able to work with ‘brighter lenses and high power zoom lenses.’ This is interesting, given the recent launch of a group of wide-maximum aperture compacts based around 12MP, 1/1.7″-type BSI CMOS sensors, such as the Olympus XZ-2, Nikon Coolpix P7700 and Samsung EX2F.

Nikon Coolpix P7700 preview – 12MP CMOS-based enthusiast compact

25 Aug

nikon_cpp7700.png

Nikon has revealed the Coolpix 7700 a CMOS-based enthusiast compact camera with class-leading zoom lens. Its 28-200mm lens has a maximum aperture range of F2.0-4.0, making it a whole stop brighter than its predecessor, the P7100’s. The P7700 is built around a 1/1.7″-type 12MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, enabling 1080p30 video and 8fps shooting. The bigger lens means there’s no room for an optical viewfinder but the P7700 gains a flip-out swivel LCD instead. We’ve had a chance to handle the P7700 and have prepared a preview looking at the changes.

Panasonic DMC-GF5 12MP mirrorless camera announced and previewed

09 Apr

panasonic_dmcgf5.png

Panasonic has formally announced the much-discussed DMC-GF5. We’ve had a pre-production GF5 for a couple of days, so we’ve had a look at what’s changed and what the diminutive Micro Four Thirds camera offers to compact camera users looking for better image quality but still wanting the option to simply point and shoot. The 12MP camera is a subtle revision over the GF3, but a higher-res screen, refined user interface and the inclusion of Panasonic’s retractable 14-42mm power zoom lens for a list price of $ 749.99/£579 makes it worth looking at.

Canon announces PowerShot S100 12MP CMOS enthusiast compact

26 Sep

Canon has announced the PowerShot S100 – the latest in its line of small enthusiast compacts. The S100 features a broader, 5x lens range (24-120mm equiv.), the company’s latest image stabilization and built-in GPS. The interesting specification, from our perspective, is the 12MP CMOS sensor. It’s the company’s second compact camera sensor, following the slightly disappointing example in 2008’s PowerShot SX1. As with the S95, the sensor remains of the larger 1/1.7" type used in high-end compacts.
